Worcestershire / William and Hannah Taylor, Criddon House, Lye, Worcestershire
« on: Monday 01 May 23 15:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

My 3rd great grandparents, William Taylor, who was born at Chowbent near Atherstone in Lancashire and baptised on 6 Apr 1817, married Hannah Cartwright (I have not been able to find their marriage yet apart from the one at Tipton in 1833, which would mean William was young at age 16?) Also why chose Tipton when they could have married at St Mary's, Oldswinford or somewhere more local?

1861 Census:-

Relationship: Head. Married, living with wife Hannah and two daughters at Criddon, private house in Lye. Occupation: Nailer

Hannah Taylor   46
William Taylor   44
Martha Taylor   12
Jane Taylor   1

I have been trying to find Criddon House, Lye on old A-Z maps and am unable to locate it.  Would someone on here know where it is or where Criddon House used to be?

Thanks in advance

Worcestershire / John Parish Baptised 17 July 1785
« on: Wednesday 11 May 22 14:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm currently going through my Parish ancestors via Halesowen Parish Registers and came across: -

17 Jul 1785 • St John the Baptist, Halesowen,Worcester,England
John, son of William & Phebe Parish, baptised. Page 295 of Halesowen Parish Registers
1786

and

3 May 1786 • St John the Baptist, Halesowen, Worcestershire,England
John Parish, infant, buried on 3rd May 1786. Page 308 of Halesowen Parish Registers

There's another John Parish, the son of John and Nancy Parish, who was baptised on 14 Feb 1790

and buried on 26 April, 1791 at St John's the Baptist, Halesowen.

However Ancestry has come up with: -

Name   John Parish
Gender   Male
Baptism Date   17 Jul 1785
Baptism Place   Halesowen,Worcester,England
Death Date   26 Apr 1791
Father   William Parish
Mother   Phoebe
FHL Film Number   886632, 886633, 886634

So... the question I'm asking is which is the correct burial for John Parish, the son of William and Phoebe Parish?

Hi
I have come across a marriage record for William Dunn (baptised on 14 Feb 1704 at St Mary's, Kingswinford, Staffordshire to parents, William and Margarett Dunn of Kingswinford) and Mary Silvey of Dudley on 11 October 1728 but no details on Family Search. I have looked up Ancestry, FreeReg, St Mary's Kingswinford parish registers, Brierley Hill parish registers and St Giles, Rowley Regis parish registers to no avail.  I would be really grateful if someone could look up other sources linking to Staffordshire to see if there are further details on there.  Many thanks in advance

Lancashire / Marriage for William Taylor and Elizabeth?
« on: Tuesday 04 January 22 21:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have been using Ancestry, Family Search and Lancashire OPC, the latter has been fantastic up till now and the further I go back, it is now getting harder to find the marriage for my ancestors, William Taylor and Elizabeth…

The smoother part was finding births and baptisms for these below named children of William and Elizabeth Taylor at their Abode, Bolton but I am unable to find a marriage for their parents: -

Alice Taylor: Baptised on 15 May 1670 at Bolton-le-Moors, St Peter, Lancashire, England and buried on 18 January 1673 at St Peter's, Bolton

John Taylor: Baptised on 3 Mar 1671 at Bolton-le-Moors, St Peter, Lancashire, England.

James Taylor: Baptised on 4 Oct 1674 at Bolton-le-Moors, St Peter, Lancashire, England.

Michael Taylor: Baptised on 3 Oct 1676 at Bolton-le-Moors, Lancashire, England.

William Taylor: Born on 1 Sept 1679 and baptised on 7 Sep 1679 at Bolton-le-Moors, St Peter, Lancashire, England.

The abode, for all the above children, was down as Bolton.

I also noticed baptisms of children whose parents were also William Taylor and Elizabeth whose Abode was down as Harwood: -

The first Elizabeth born 13 March 1663/4 at Harwood and baptised on 16 March 1663/4 at Bolton-le-Moors, St Peter.  Buried on 16 May 1666 at St Peter, Bolton.

The second Elizabeth was born on 9 January 1667 at Harwood and baptised on 13 March at St Peter's, Bolton.

There is also another William Taylor, whose abode was Tong, Bolton, who was born on 9 June 1661 and baptised on 17 June 1661 at St Peter's, Bolton. He was buried on 29 May 1667 at Bolton-le-Moors, St Peter, Lancashire, England and his abode was down as Harwood. His parents were William and Elizabeth Taylor.

As I couldn't find the marriage nearer to the first born of the children whose Abode was Bolton, I decided to go  further back to 1661 and found only two possible marriages via Lancashire OPC, which were: -

25 May 1662 at St Michael & All Angels, Croston, Lancashire.
William Taylor from Eccleston
Elizabeth Morress from Bysph (?)
Married by Baynes. Original Reg held at Lancaster Archives.

and

26 April 1663 at St Michael's on Were, Lancashire.
William Taylor from Pilling
Elizabeth Baggott from Preesall
Married by Licence. Source: LDS Film: 1470824.

Both marriages are after the birth of the first child, William who was born on 9 June 1661.

I think I'm getting confused, which wasn't helped by the deaths of those children who were born in one area and died in another area... as well as not having knowledge of the area so am wondering if there were two or three sets of parents with the same names or were they the same parents throughout despite living in Tong, Harwood and Bolton?

Since I live over 200 miles away from Bolton, would it be possible for someone who live locally to double check the above sources out at the local Archives or point me to an excellent online site, although I can't see anything that could be better than Lancashire OPC?

It will be very much appreciated

Hi,

I have paid and downloaded Parish records on to our external hard drive from Midlands Ancestors Online shop months ago.

It was working fine up and I was able to access parish records until lately and the problem appears to lie with the external hard drive box plugged to my laptop as it is not showing up as being plugged in.  :'(

At the moment, hubby is trying to "repair" via https://setapp.com/how-to/how-to-access-external-drive-thats-not-recognized-on-mac?ci=12187016783&adgroupid=127755858847&adpos=&ck=&targetid=dsa-1343319978373&match=&gnetwork=g&creative=548451158074&placement=&placecat=&accname=setapp&gclid=Cj0KCQiA2sqOBhCGARIsAPuPK0gnLxyZScX2ioTP01eMNKugvdwnOQUxKFVfXR5PwG1jY18u8fEbYKsaAjrBEALw_wcB#show-connected-devices-in-finder

If this does not work, this will mean I will not be able to access the saved parish records and will it mean I will have to pay to download it all again from Midlands Ancestors if they still have it advertised on their site?  :-\

Hi,

Wondering if anyone living in Worcester could look up below marriage between Thomas Herring and Mary Sparrow, see if there are anymore details such as their abode, witnesses, etc? I have looked on FreeReg, Ancestry, Family Search to no avail and do not have access to Find My Past. I'm also doing this for my 81 year old Auntie, who came across this marriage years ago: -

Name:   Thomas Herring
Gender:   Male
Marriage Date:   10 Jul 1785
Marriage Place:   Saint Martin,Worcester,Worcester,England
Spouse:
Mary Sparrow
FHL Film Number:   415132, 415133, 415134, 415135, 561598

Children, all baptised at St Mary's Oldswinford: -

John baptised 1 May 1786
Thomas baptised 16 Nov 1788
Mary baptised 5 Dec 1790
Maria baptised 10 March 1793
Sarah baptised 29 June 1794
Betty baptised 27 March 1796
Joseph baptised 25 Dec 1797
Charlotte baptised 12 June 1803

and am not entirely sure if Harriot is born to our Thomas and Mary or a different Thomas and Mary as she was baptised 7 April 1824 at Clent.

This is the only marriage that is the nearest to the eldest child, John who was baptised 1st May 1786 at St Mary's, Old Swinford, near Stourbridge and his other siblings were also baptised. Thomas Herring and Mary lived in the Old Swinford area but Mary may have originated from Worcester hence being married at Worcester?

It will be much appreciated.

Staffordshire / Where did Thomas Smith and Kitty Barnsley come from?
« on: Wednesday 03 March 21 16:54 GMT (UK)  »

Thomas Smith
Marriage Date: 28 Dec 1803

Spouse: Kitty Barnsley
FHL Film Number: 0599888 IT 4, 886632, 886633, 886634, 886635, 886636, 886637, 886638

Thomas Smith was baptised on 8 May 1808 at Halesowen,Worcester,England. Father: Thomas Smith Mother: Kitty  FHL Film Number: 886632, 886633, 886634

My 3rd great, grandfather, John Smith was baptised on 31 Dec 1809 at Cradley, Halesowen, Staffordshire, England. Denomination Presbyterian Father: Thomas Smith Mother: Hitty Smith

Caroline Smith was baptised on 10 Sep 1820 at Cradley, Staffordshire, England Denomination Presbyterian  Father: Thomas Smith Mother: Kitty Smith

Thomas Smith may well have been a local man as there are lots of Thomas Smiths in the area but I cannot find a baptism for Kitty. I have tried looking for Katherine, Katharine, Katharina, Kathleen, Kate as well as Kitty in surrounding areas to no avail. I have only come across one Kitty Barnsley as the one who married Thomas Smith on 28 Dec 1803 at Halesowen.

Any advice on where do I go from there will be much appreciated.

Hi,

I have my 7th great, grandmother Ann Coe baptised on 2 Apr 1676 at St Peter, Bolton, Lancashire, England to parents, Ralph Coe and Alice Bradshaw. Abode: Tonge. File Line No:1534. Source: FreeReg

Ralph Coe married Alice Bradshaw (Born: 10 Feb 1648 and baptised during 1663) on 22 August 1670. I have come across a possible birth:6 March 1655 and baptism:11 March 1655 for Ralph Coe, which would make him age 15. After their marriage, they went on to have:-

Alice baptised: 27 Aug 1671 and Ann baptised: 2 April 1676.

However, I have come across an illegitimate daughter, Jane Bradshaw born on 24 Dec 1666 and baptised on 5 January 1666/67 to Ralph Coe and Alice Bradshaw, which would mean Ralph was about 11 years old and Alice, around 18 years old!!

I thought that wasn't possible so have looked again for Ralph Coe's baptism (on FreeReg, Ancestry, FS and http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html) nearer to Alice's age to no avail... so having read the note on their 22 August 1670 marriage at St Peter, Bolton, Lancashire, England: -

"Ralph Coe and Alice Bradshaw of Tonge were formerly published, but John Bradshaw, her father forbade it. Howbeit a little before his death, has left them both to their own liberty and they were married in Bolton church."

And wondered... was Ralph's age the reason why for Alice's father, John Bradshaw objected to their marriage?
