Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA match to 3rd great grandfathers brother
« on: Friday 20 January 23 09:29 GMT (UK)  »
I have come up as being very close relative (2nd cousin) to my 3rd great grandfathers brother!   I have no DNA matches to my 3rd great grandfather.  I know that the death certificate of my 3rd great grandfather shows the same father as his brother but would that come up as such a close match.  Getting confused!

Aberdeenshire / Parents of Barbara King
« on: Tuesday 03 January 23 19:40 GMT (UK)  »
I have been looking for the parents of Barbara King who died in 1852, Teuchan, Cruden.  She had been married to William Craighead (1792-1832) and then married to Keith Hutchison from 1839.  On census 1841 and 1851 Barbara has said that she came from Peterhead.  I cannot find her for the date that is mentioned of 1801 but there is a birth in 1795.  I have been trying to follow the 1795 trail with her father given as George.  I have found a George King that was married to Isabel Murrison from approx 1785 - 1815 and then to Elisabeth Middleton from 1815 till his death in 1818 at Stuartfield.  Could this really be Barbara's family?  There is 2 name coincidences 1) George Murison was a witness in one of Barbara's children baptism in 1821 and she named another child Margaret Middleton in 1824.
Am i clutching at straws?  Thanks for any input.

Aberdeenshire / William Smith and Ann/Mary Craig
« on: Saturday 01 October 22 15:21 BST (UK)  »
Still banging my head on a brick wall over the parents of James Smith 1820 approx - 1892 aged 82.  On his marriage in 1855 (age given as 33) he gives his place of birth and registration as Longside and his parents as Ann Craig and William Smith both still alive. William is listed as a crofter.   On his death in 1892 his father is listed again as William Smith but his mum as Mary Craig both deceased.  I am slowly going through all marriages that I can find of a William Smith and Ann or Mary regardless of surname as I cannot find them at all not even in a census.  Any idea what other first name mum could be if she could be called Ann or Mary?  I have tried surname of Craig and even Crab and Greig and getting nowhere.  Thanks for any inspiration :).
Also should i even trust that his dads name was actually William?   Just open to any offerings :).

Aberdeenshire / Annuitant in 1851
« on: Tuesday 13 September 22 16:29 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace a relative and have found a sister who is listed as independent in the 1841 Census and an annuitant in the 1851 Census aged 73 in Mintlaw, but then disappears and I cannot find death, she is called Jean Craig.   Any ideas why she would be an annuitant?  I cannot find any marriage for her, nor in fact birth so no idea of her parents.  Thanks for any advice.

Caithness / Andrew Banks of Mey
« on: Sunday 13 February 22 18:09 GMT (UK)  »
I am having great difficulty finding Andrew Banks who is mentioned in the 1763 Kirk Sessions as being the father of Donald Banks who admits (along with Margaret Banks who he later marries) to having a child out of wedlock.  The Banks families are being a bit of a nightmare :(, can anyone help either send me down a path or is it time to sit back and wait for inspiration in years to come?  Thanks.

1 thing i did find unusual was actully naming Donalds father, could it possibly be because he was underage? I havent found his birth or death as yet so maybe i'm barking up the wrong tree.

Aberdeenshire / Lewis Davidson
« on: Wednesday 26 January 22 11:16 GMT (UK)  »
Tying to find the birth and death of my 5th Great grandfather Lewis Davidson.   On his marriage in 1794 he was living in Fraserburgh and married in Old Deer to Margaret Birnie.   They lived in Strichen then Rora, Longside and had 8 children.  In the 1841 Census he is living with Margaret in Rora, he gives his place of birth as Aberdenshire and his age as 75.  Margaret died in 1850.   In the 1851 Census he is still in Rora along with his 8 year old grandaughter and he gives his place of birth as Fraserburgh and his age as 86.  I cannot find his birth or death.  Can anyone help please?

Caithness / Alexander Manson
« on: Saturday 04 December 21 12:44 GMT (UK)  »
Alexander Manson married to Bell Manson (Isabella) 1820 Mey, Caithness.  I cannot find his death but on his daughter Margarets marriage in 1849 it says 'daughter of Alexander Manson Wick' and by the time his son John married in 1855 he is listed as deceased.  I cannot find him in any census as by 1841 his wife and children had moved back in with her mum Janet Banks, brother Alexander Manson and sister Margaret Manson.  Also I should add that I am unsure of his birth or parents.  Many trees have his parents as David Manson and Janet Munro but he would have been 17 when he married and Bell was 25, plus they followed the “naming of children” for Bells parents so why not for his own?  If they followed for his own then his father should be called James and his mother Isabella.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Banffshire / Hen(d)ry/Spence
« on: Sunday 07 November 21 12:26 GMT (UK)  »
My  3rd great grandmother Isobel Hen(d)ry 1788 - 1874 in Banff is listed in the 1841 census under her married name of Spence as having independent means and in the 1851 census as being a widow and under her maiden name.  Her husband who I now believe was called David was a Captain (Merchant seaman) but so far apart from their marriage in 1816 in Banff (no witnesses mentioned) I know nothing about him.  They had 2 children Mary 1823 and Elizabeth 1819 that I have found but there could possibly be more again no witnesses given for the births.   If David was already dead in 1841 could the independent means be some sort of pension (did they have them that far back) and if it was where would I be able to trace the pension from?   Any ideas on how I could trace David Spence?  Thanks.

Aberdeenshire / Margaret Watson circa 1750
« on: Friday 01 October 21 15:38 BST (UK)  »
My 6th Great-grandmother Margaret Watson married January 1776 in Cruden to John Ligertwood (1749-1822).  On their mariage it said both of this parish.   No witnesses listed.  Margaret died in Slain 1840 but I cannot find a birth nor parents for her. Margaret and John had 7 children:
John (1777-1824)   witness at baptism William Watson
Barbara (1778-1818)
William (1782-1861)
Margaret (1785-1841)
Helen (1787-1787)
Alexander (1790-1821)
Christian (1796-1800)
John (177-1824) is the only one that gives a Watson name as being a witness.
John Ligertwood (1749-1822) parents were John Ligertwood and Margaret Sangster.
I have tried looking for William and Barbara as parents of Margaret but have come up blank.  Does anyone either have her in their family tree or have some suggestions to find her birth please?
