Lancashire Lookup Requests / Marriage C. 1875 Lookup Request
« on: Monday 30 December 19 03:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hello!

I'm searching for a marriage between Thomas Mercer, b. C. 1843, and Martha Price, b. in 1846. She belonged to the Wesleyan Methodist Church, but I have no idea about his family.

Their first child was born in 1875 in Liverpool. Martha Price lived with her parents on the 1861 Census, but haven't located her on the 1871 Census. Therefore she could have been already married to Thomas.

He worked as Cotton Porter.

So far I've tried on Ancestry and Family Search, using different spellings, and no luck.

Thank you!

Suffolk / Barham House, Training College, Claydon
« on: Sunday 04 August 19 21:19 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

An ancestor born in Lancashire in 1905, was sent to Barham House after her mum passed away in 1913. I'm unsure of when he was sent there. I only found out he was in this institution because I was able to locate a Western Australia, Australia, Crew and Passenger List. It says he was trained as a Porter. There are lots of young people belonging to this institution on the list, all have different trades.

I'm a bit puzzled about why was sent there instead of a nearby industrial school. I was able to find one of his descendants because they took a DNA too. She said he never talked about it because he suffered abuse. She said it was a Catholic institution. She didn't want to go into details either, so I have no idea if Barham had something to do with it, or it was either in Australia or Lancashire where that happened. Since the dad was sick in the workhouse and there were no relatives except little siblings, I imagine there were took by an orphanage or similar...

I would like to learn more about it but I don't live in Britain and I don't know how I could do it online.  It seems some records for Barham are held by the National Archives, but there's nothing on Ancestry or Find My Past.  I just have his records from 1936 in Australia, but nothing in between the 1911 English Census and the 1936 Census, except for the ship manifest.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

Dorset Lookup Requests / Munden from Dorset
« on: Sunday 21 July 19 13:56 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

I'm stuck with John Munden's parents. He was born C. 1824 in Thorncombe, Dorset, England.

According to his marriage doc to Elizabeth Marsh in 1849, he worked as a Mechanic and John's father was John Mundens, a Labourer.

There are a few John Munden b. C. 1824 on the 1841 Census.  Also, I have found a baptism dated 4 Jul 1824, at Thorncombe, Dorset, parents John and Ann Mundens.

Searching on Ancestry's records, I have located two parents: one John Mundens married to Ann Miller, and another one married to Ann Hitchcock.

If he was still alive, there's just one John Mundens, who works as Mechanic, on the 1841 Census, but he is married to a Sarah.  I guess his wife could have passed away, and he remarried, but there's no a son called John in the household.

Hello! A while ago I submitted a photo request of a burial in Elswick Cemetery on a website, but it hasn't been fulfilled. I know it's a long shot, but I was wondering if someone here volunteers in that area and could take a picture of the headstone.

William Aitchison, from Dunbar, passed away on the 15th April 1902 in Gateshead. He was buried on Section P Grave No 437.  And his wife Sarah Ann Mundens, from Dorset, who passed away on the 9th January 1906 in Gateshead. She's buried on Section P grave 437 too.

Also, regarding the Methodist Church of Dilston Road that appears on her obit. I've been checking on Google maps and it seems it's in Newcastle, but they lived at 39 Hewitt Street, in Gateshead, and previously in 21 Maple Street, Elswick. I was wondering if it was the nearest Methodist Church at the time...  I don't know where they married and haven't been able to find any of their kids baptism records on Ancestry. It's the first time I've been searching for Methodist records and I do wonder if they haven't been published online and if there's a way to request them.

Thank you!

Lancashire / Trying to find the Williams family in the 1891 Census
« on: Monday 15 July 19 19:51 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

I'm stuck trying to locate Mary Ellen Williams, her parents and her brother, on the 1891 Census.

Mary Ellen Williams was born on 16th August 1878 in Liverpool. Her parents were Thomas Williams, a mariner born about 1853, and Mary Roberts born about 1869. Both born in Amlwch, Anglesey.

Mary Ellen was baptised on 23rd Jan 1879 at St. Paul's COE. The family lived at Prussia Street.

On the 1881 Census, Mary Ellen, her parents and her brother William Williams b. C. 1881, lived at Court 4, 1 Brook Street.

She married on 22 Dec 1895 at St. Peter's, and I have plenty of information on her after that, but I have been unable to locate the Williams' family on the 1891 Census.  There's a William Williams on the Industrial school that could be her brother, and a Mary Ellen Williams living with relatives that could be her, but nothing on her parents.

I am unsure whether her parents have other children or not, as when I searched on the GRO, there are many Williams born in Liverpool with a mother with the maiden name Roberts.

I would appreciate any help, as I'm finding it very challenging since there are so many Williams. I have a Worldwide subs on Ancestry, but no luck finding abroad either. Thank you!

Hello!

I'm working on my partner's tree. I'm stuck with one of his paternal's Great Grandfather, as his GG never married and there are several Thomas Mercer born in Liverpool C 1878.

According to his death records he passed away in 1934, aged 56 years of age. He's buried at Rice Lane, in paupers. He worked as Ship Scaler. He fought in WWI, but I don't know any details except that he suffered of health problems due to being gassed, and unfortunately it seems a lot of records were lost. Also, I know they got together around 1919 and that they lived at 14 Mulberry Street, in Liverpool.

There are a few Thomas Mercer born C 1878 in Liverpool on the GRO. I searched for their mothers' maiden surnames among the DNA matches, but no luck, as practically none of the closer matches has a tree, or get back to any messages.

I would appreciate any advice on how to search further. Please, bear in mind that I don't like in the city.

Thank you!

Durham / Girls' Reformatory at 3 Tatham Street, Sunderland, Look up
« on: Wednesday 02 January 19 12:59 GMT (UK)  »
I have located an ancestor's on the 1911 Census at the Girls' Reformatory at 3 Tatham Street, in Sunderland. Also, I recently found the following Newcastle Newspaper Chronicle's article published on the 7th Nov 1906:

A Gateshead Girl in Trouble

At the Gateshead Borough Police Court, this morning, Emma Aitchison, 14, was charged with having stolen 6s.

Mary Bell, 7, Morrison Street, said the accused's parents were dead. Shortly before the accused's mother died, witness promised that she would look after the accused.  About three months ago, the accused asked witness to take her in, and witness did so.  On Saturday last, prosecutrix sent the accused on an errand with 6s.  She did not return until early on Monday morning, and she had then spent the money.

Detective Sergt. Burrows stated that when he took the accused into custody, she she said she had spent the money.

The Chief Constable stated that although the accused had not been before the magistrates, her history was not a good one, and he was of the opinion that it was a proper case for a reformatory.

It seems she was sent there by the end of 1906 and she was still there in 1911. I have searched on Ancestry but unfortunately there are no records of the Girl's Reformatory but the 1911 Census. I know Emma Aitchison lived at 141 Morrison Street at the time and that her parents have passed recently.  Does anyone know if there are any records available online or that they can be ordered? I imagine they might be some at the local library, but unfortunately I don't live in England.

Thank you!

Kilkenny / Look Up Whittaker, Callan
« on: Saturday 11 August 18 01:41 BST (UK)  »
Hello! I'm trying to locate the baptism record of James Whittaker, b. 1815 in Callan, Kilkenny.  Also, I'm looking for his marriage record that took place before 1836. I've been searching on Ancestry and FindMyPast, but it seems there are no old records at all. I've also searched on Irish Genealogy and no luck, and I've tried at the Catholic baptism and marriages on NIL, but I've dyslexia and I ended up giving up, as it was very challenging. Not sure if there are any other websites, with transcribed records, that I could search for.

James joined the army and he was based in India (1836-1857). He married there, and when I got his marriage record, it says he was born in Callan, c. 1815 and he was a widower, but in that certificate there was no questions about the name of their parents, etc. I've some of his military records, but unfortunately I haven't been able to locate the paperwork of when he listed and they are asked for a next of kin, etc. His second wife, Elizabeth White, was a widower too. All I know she was b. C. 1821 in Ireland.

I would appreciate any help trying to locate any info about him in Ireland. Thank you!
