Cork / Bantry Church of Ireland records
« on: Friday 11 December 20 12:09 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all,

Does anyone know where the CofI records for Bantry area are kept/whether they are online?

I am looking for a John Jones born around 1801 in Bantry (could be RC but I think probably CofI), son of Thomas, a soldier, and Margaret Jones (who were also married in Bantry around 1799-1800).

Thanks,
A

England / Mocatta family of Liverpool/Cheshire
« on: Thursday 10 December 20 13:43 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all,

I am looking into an ancestor Rose Mocatta Wharton, born 18 November 1868 in Birkenhead, daughter of Thomas and Catherine Wharton. Her unusual middle name suggests some connection to the Mocatta family (Jewish bankers) but I cannot find any link so far.

Her father Thomas Wharton was born around 1841 in Liverpool and was a coal merchant, son of James Wharton, paver(?). Catherine was born Catherine Maxwell born in Ireland and the daughter of John Maxwell, Gardener.

If anyone has any ideas as to why she was given the middle name Mocatta I'd be very grateful!
Thanks!

Wales / Rev Henry Powell of Llandrillo d.1582
« on: Monday 30 November 20 19:24 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all,

I am trying to find some information about Henry Powell who was Rector of Llandrillo, Merionethshire 1557-82 and who in his will in 1582 had property in Merionethshire, Denbighshire and Flintshire (so obviously from a wealthy family!).

He was 'absent studying at Oxford' in 1560 and graduated with BCL in 1565 (but no record of his parentage in the Alumni Oxonienses), and was appointed chaplain to the Earl of Arundel in 1560.

His executor was John Powell a kinsman who lived in the Llandrillo area too - other than that no other leads locally.

I wondered if he was related to Powells of Kelystryn (in Dwnn's visitations vol 2 p 311) but can't find anything and hoping someone will be able to find something!

Thanks

« on: Sunday 26 April 20 16:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am trying to locate where records might be kept of admissions/matriculation of students at the University of Padua. I have read records were kept but can't find them.

I was hoping to find a published source like alumni oxonienses but if not if anyone can find where the records are kept that would be great!!

Specifically interested in 18th century records

Thanks

The Common Room / 'the younger' v 'the elder' in 17th century records
« on: Friday 26 July 19 13:03 BST (UK)  »
All,

Just a question regarding two men, father and son known as 'the younger' v 'the elder'.

I have come across a parish terrier which refers to lands owned by 'John Jones the younger' (he was in his 40s at the time). His father of the same name (who owned the same lands) had been dead for 30+ years...I was wondering if anyone has come across this before/if it was common practice to continue to refer to a son as 'the younger' even when 'the elder' no longer lives?

Thanks,
A

Dear all,

Trying to date these two portraits.

first one is the man without sideburns - how early could this be? I am wondering if it was a man who born 1742 died 1784. My instinct is it is a bit later by way of hair etc.

Second one man with sideburns. Think this has been identified as a gentleman who lived between 1760 and 1840?

They are both Welsh.

Thanks A

The two men are related prob father and son but just trying to identify them.

The Common Room / Estimating the worth/income of an estate
« on: Saturday 13 April 19 19:38 BST (UK)  »
Dear all,

I wonder if anyone has any knowledge/resources of trying to estimate the income generated by an estate/total value from the number of acres, or vice versa?

To give an example - my 5th great grandfather died in 1817 with an estate of around 205 acres (calculated from later 1851 census) in two parishes in Merionethshire, North Wales. In his will he asked for this to be mortgaged to a total value of £1,200. Is there any way of working out what sort of income this would have brought him per anum?

He also appears in the 1790 land tax, and wonder if it can be generated from this.

Thank you in advance for any help,
Arvanitakis
