United States of America / Janet Syme Henderson - in New York?
« on: Sunday 24 July 22 18:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
Getting back into some family tree tracing after a (very long!) break and have hit a bit of a brick wall. I have a Janet Syme Henderson born in Scotland in 1906, and died in Scotland in 1981. The only other record of Janet I can find indicates that she emigrated to the US in or around 1924 - she appears on a passenger list in 1924 and there's a record for her in the 1930 NY census staying with family in Nassau, NY state. It gets more confusing because at some point she had a daughter (also called Janet Syme Henderson) who married in Scotland in 1955 (so *might* still be alive). However, I can't find any trace at all of Janet Senior having married and / or had a child, or of her having returned to Scotland... and I can't find a birth cert for Janet Junior. I'm not particularly sure about where to look as I've limited knowledge about how US civil records work, or where to find them. If anyone can point me in the direction of where I could look, I'd be really grateful!

The Lighter Side / Trying To Find Property Owner - Please Help!!
« on: Friday 14 April 06 09:02 BST (UK)  »
Rootschatters, I am hoping someone can help me with some advice.  We live in a tenement building, and one of the flats has been empty for over 20 years.  We have tried and tried to trace the owner with no success; we know his name, we know he left sometime in the 1960s and we know the mortgage was paid off even though he wasn't living there so the building society aren't interested in helping us find him.  Alas, no-one who currently lives in the close has lived here long enough to have known him.  We are currently having a dispute with a chap who has 'taken over' the flat and put a tenant in - he had to be evicted for reasons I won't go into here! - and on police advice we locked up the flat and changed the locks on the close.  Unfortunately, the chap who claims he 'owns' the flat keeps breaking in even though the police have warned him to stop as he claims he has every right to do so.  I've done a land registry search (awaiting results) to try to find out who is the legal owner, but it is becoming really urgent that we find the legal owner to get this sorted out.

I am at the end of my rope with all the worry over this, and if anyone can suggest other avenues of help I'd be really grateful.  We have tried the local council (not interested as privately owned building), the local MP (not interested full stop) and the police who have been great, but there is a limit to what they can do.  There is every possibility that the legal owner might be deceased, but even if we could find a descendant it would be a start.  All and any ideas of where to go next will be gratefully received!!

Thanks for your patience with this very long post!

Fife / Help! Where has Flisk gone?! COMPLETED - THANKS!
« on: Saturday 28 January 06 08:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hoping someone can help with directions.  Have connections with Flisk, near Newburgh as far as i can make out.  I'm hoping to be in that area over the weekend and thought I had nothing better to do than go onto multimap.com and figure out where exactly it is..... WRONG!  Flisk seems to ahve vanished off the face of the earth.  Can anyone tell me if it is still there and just too small to appear on the map or has it been swallowed up by somewhere larger?  And if so - where?!
Thanks for any help!

Perthshire / Peddie Family, Abernethy
« on: Tuesday 24 January 06 23:28 GMT (UK)  »
Am modifying my previous post as have managed to get out to Abernethy and have a hunt round the old cemetery. It has answered a few questions, but unable to find any burials pre-1850 and I know the Peddies were in the village before that time.  They were, according to family lore, active in the secessionist church which alas has been abandoned for at least 50 years - but I don't think there were any burials in that churchyard, and the only other cemetery has only come into use in recent history.  Can anyone give me any pointers on where to look for these burials or the records from the secessionists in the village at that time?  I honestly cannot think of anywhere else they might be buried, assuming of course that they didn't just get beamed back aboard the mothership..... ;D.
Any help or suggestions where to look greatly appreciated!
Anna
