Wigtownshire / Help with an ancestor from Wigtown?
« on: Wednesday 19 September 18 12:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I have posted here in the past looking for information on my ancestor, James McPherson, without much luck. I have, however, had quite the breakthrough. I found that James had two wives (his first passed away, I am related to him and his second wife). He was, however, buried with his first wife - I found a transcription/photo of the headstone and it has a death date!

James died on March 3, 1827, aged 37 years; this puts his birth year at 1790 (+/- 1). He is buried in Portpatrick Old Kirkyard, and the headstone also mentions Portospittal (I cant find out what this is) in reference to James and his first wife (Elizabeth McCracken).

Naturally I thought I'd be able to find more about him based on this but I can find nothing specific on his death (aside from his headstone) and nothing specific on his birth (there are several James McPhersons born in 1790).

I would deeply appreciate any thoughts/advice!

Thank you!

Wigtownshire / McPherson family member in Wigtown? I'd love some help!
« on: Saturday 11 November 17 15:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone - me again!

So I've worked a lot out for my family tree but I am now totally stuck yet again. Funnily enough (funny for someone else, not for me!) I am stuck now on the first ancestor I was specifically trying to find - urgh!

So, anyway, I have found my ancestor, James McPherson. I have no birth or death date. All I know is that he married Elizabeth Armstrong on October 30th, 1817, in Portpatrick, Wigtown. Elizabeth was born in 1796 in Portpatrick, and died on May 26th, 1877.

James and Elizabeth had a daugter, Susan McPherson, who was born April 22nd 1822 in Stonykirk and died 26 October 1899. She married a man named Robert Shaw on September 29 1842 in Kirkmaiden. I am descendant of this line and am trying to trace back the McPherson side.

So, again, I have no info at all on James and his line is the specific one I am trying to trace back.

Do you all have any thoughts?

As a secondary... this link is to a snippet of a document on my Google Drive account that was too large to post here as an attachment.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1O_fOKesOngq6-GOpQ8e25v5hI5ri4a1t/view?usp=sharing

This is the death certificate for that Elizabeth Armstrong. At the time of her death she had remarried to a man named Robert McGarvie, but on that death cert it lists James McPherson as her first husband. I cannot read the other info below it... I'm also not sure if it lists some kind of death info for James McPherson either - can any of you help interpret this?

Secondly, I know it lists Elizabeth's mother as Susanna Armstrong nee Rennie, but I cannot at all read Elizabeth's father's name. Any thoughts on that as well?

As always, the McPherson line is the primary, but I am hoping that MAYBE some detail on the Armstrongs could help lead me there somehow.

Thank you so much in advance!!

Scotland / Ancestor help? McPherson
« on: Thursday 02 November 17 14:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I'm hoping to get some help on a specific family member. I have a different thread up about being brick walled in Scotland, and this plays off of that one. Note that on half of that, I had the wrong person.

Long story short, I now know that my relative, Susan McPherson, was born in 1822 in Stonyekirk, Wigtownshire to James McPherson and Elizabeth Armstrong.

I have no other info on James or Elizabeth other than the fact that they were married on October 30th, 1817 in Portpatrick.

I know that Susan McPherson married Robert Shaw on 29, Sep, 1842 in Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire. Together, they had a daughter, Elizabeth Shaw, who married Thomas Rodie.

So, again, what I am trying to do is trace Susan McPherson's parents back. I know her dad was James McPherson and I know her mother was Elizabeth Armstrong, but I can't seem to find more info on either of them.

Thanks!

Hello!

I am writing here (I've been getting more active on RootsChat lately) requesting some assistance clarifying and working on one of my ancestors, William Harrison.

From the censuses I have found, assuming they're correct, he appears to be from Lincolnshire, potentially Boothby, and born around 1844-1846.

If this is the right William Harrison (if the name William is even right), I have him as married to a Mary Anne Jones (born around 1851, Llangadfan, Wales) in 1872.

Now, how I even got this far, is that I know my Great Grandfather, whose name is Robert Harrison. Robert was born 6 JUN 1889 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, and died on 10 OCT 1945 in Liverpool North, Lancashire, England. This I know to be fact.

Also fact, is that Robert married Ethel Salter Phillips (born 16 FEB 1891, in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, and died 22 MAR 1934). They were married on Feb 29 1916 in West Derby, Lancashire. They had five children, Margaret (died young), Ethel (died young), Robert Henry, Sidney, and Arthur Edwin (who is my grandfather).

So, to go over this again, I need help confirming who the mother and father are of Robert Harrison (the one born in 1889, this Robert is the father of my grandfather). If Robert's father is the William Adam Harrison that I suspect it is, I need to confirm who is mother is (maybe Mary Anne Jones).

Once I do that, I need to confirm William Harrison and Mary Anne Jones's parents. Primarily I am focused on William's parents. I believe that they COULD be Thomas Harrison (born around 1811 in Lincolnshire) and Ann Lovelee (spelling could be different, born around the same time, also in Lincolnshire).

So, now that I dumped out a ton of information... does anyone here have any thoughts?

Thank you!!!

Monaghan / Help with an ancestor from Monaghan?
« on: Sunday 29 October 17 21:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hello!

If anyone is able, I would really appreciate some help looking up someone!

I'm trying to find more on my great, great grandfather, Thomas Wilson. He was born in Monaghan around 1860... 1860 seems to be the most reasonable guess.

All else I know about him is that, at some point, he moved to England and married Elizabeth Wylie Rodie in Liverpool, England, in 1884.

He had 2 children I know of... Susan McPherson Wilson, born 1885 in Kirkdale, Liverpool and James Wilson, born 1888 in Kirkdale, Liverpool.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to find out more?

Thank you in advance!

Lanarkshire / Help with a family member? I'm entirely stuck. Lanark/Wigtown
« on: Tuesday 24 October 17 21:23 BST (UK)  »
**if you think this would belong better in the general board, then please let me know!**

Hello, everyone! I am digging down deeper into my Scottish roots and I find I need some help - I am currently stuck.

To start off basic...

I have a relative named Margaret Muir, who was born in Wigtownshire on April 9th, 1820. When I found that parish birth record, I saw that her parents were listed: Robert Muir and Catherine MacLean.

That's where I'm stuck.

I can't find a single thing at all on this Robert Muir, nor can I find anything on Catherine MacLean (this is the side I am interested in, in particular), other than this confusing detail...

I found a Catherin Mclean (not Maclean, as the birth cert said) who married a Robert Muir in Glasgow on 18 May 1828. This, at first, seems like it would be paydirt: the names are close enough and they match in a similar/ish area to Wigtownshire, but they were married in 1828 and their daughter Margaret was born in 1820... would this be considered odd for the time period? Again, I don't know for sure if it's MacLean or Mclean.

Now, even if we take this marriage as correct, I still cannot find a single thing further.

Does anyone have any insight or help they would be willing to lend? It would mean a lot - I've been stuck here for a couple weeks!

Thank you!

Wigtownshire / Help with a relative from Wigtownshire? I'm brickwalled.
« on: Friday 29 September 17 15:55 BST (UK)  »
Hey everyone,

I'm getting pretty stuck tracing my line back into Scotland. So far I've found that I am descended from James Muir Wilson, who was born on the 6th of March, 1843 in Wigtownshire, Scotland, to John Wilson and Margaret Muir - John and Margaret were married at the time... Muir is Margaret's maiden name. James Muir Wilson did also move to Liverpool, so I can't tell either if his parents moved with him or died in Scotland.

I can't find anything on where John Wilson and Margaret Muir, the parents of James Muir Wilson, were born or in what year. James also had a sister, Margaret Muir Wilson, born in Old Luce in 1845. The closest detail I've found is that they were married in February of 1843, just a month before their son was born, at Old Luce parish in Wigtown.

In February 1868, however, James Muir Wilson did marry a Mary Bann in St. Phillips church in Liverpool.

One detail - I can't find any marriage info for John and Margaret for Feb 1843, but I found it in a google search, which turned up a transcribed version of the local newspaper, showing a John Wilson and Margaret Muir getting married by the same minister who baptized their baby a month later. So this marriage info I have, about them getting married in 1843, has no family info or etc, just the names and the date of marriage. I cannot find the corresponding document for the life of me in parish records.

So, again, what I am really looking for is help tracing James parents, John Wilson and Margaret Muir, back further. Particularly on the Wilson side as I am trying to establish some clan information for my father, but I am wildly interested in Muir as well!

Thanks so much in advance!

Does anyone have any input? I've been stuck here for quite awhile.
