Occupation Interests / Gavier's Porter
« on: Friday 30 July 21 19:45 BST (UK)  »
On the 1861 census, my relative, Robert Brown, born 1823 at Thornage, Norfolk was listed as a Gavier's Porter.  He was living at the Rose And Crown, Crown Street, South Weald, Brentwood, Essex at the time.

Despite googling, I have never been able to ascertain what a Gavier is.

In 1871 he is listed as a Painter and in 1881 he is listed as a Painter and House Agent.

On his marriage certificate in 1862, his occupation is hard to read, but it looks like Furman.

Anyone know what a Gavier is?

The Common Room / Where Is The Mouse?
« on: Wednesday 31 July 19 14:26 BST (UK)  »
Hope someone can help.

I had a relative called Charles Nurse who drowned on 1 May 1878 from a ship called "Union". His body washed up on Foulness Beach and he was buried on 5th June 1878 at St Mary's Church, Foulness, Essex. It said on his burial record: "Picked up on the sands, drowned". My relative lived at Blakeney, Norfolk, England and was born at Titchwell, Norfolk, England. On his paperwork, it says he drowned "off The Mouse". Can anyone tell me whereabouts The Mouse was/is?

Useful Links / Ancestors in Twyford/Owslebury/Morestead Hampshire

Came across this website and was able to add a lot of missing info for my hubby's Hampshire relatives.  Not much Hampshire content online so this made a welcome addition.

I hope this hasn't been posted elsewhere on the forum - my apologies if it has.

I'd be grateful for any support you can offer:

World War One / WW1 Mystery! Births in Belgium or France
« on: Tuesday 13 November 07 00:05 GMT (UK)  »
Not sure if this is the correct place for this but here goes!

I seem to have stirred up a mystery with an Aussie client. I sent him some WW1 military records and the name of a child appears on his grandfather's records that my client has never heard of. He is also sure his mother never knew about this child which would be her brother.

The name looks like it has been added to the records as an afterthought. The child's name has a date of birth next to it but nothing comes up on Free BMD. It also looks like the notation 'Not Recognised' is written by the child's name.

My client wonders if a child was fathered by his grandfather while he was serving in France/Belgium. Are there any resources both offline and online to search for French or Belgian births. The birth year is 1918.

Hi Rootschatters,

Someone has just sent me this photo.

I wondered whether any of you were up for the challenge of restoring it to how it would have looked originally.

Interested to see any results.  Good Luck!

Hi,

Can you improve this photo and give him a red jacket?  Grateful for any help.  :)

Here are two versions for you to play with - one has already had some work done on it.

Cheers, PP
