Pembrokeshire / Cecilia MacKay?McKay
« on: Monday 12 April 21 15:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm in the search of a Cecilia Mackay/McKay who is my 4x Great-Grandmother. She has been a mystery to me ever since I discovered her. She was recorded on several censuses, as having been born in Pembrokeshire although she had suggested otherwise on other records. I've found a baptismal record for her and a sibling on 16th March 1821 in the St Mary's area in Pembrokeshire. Her parents were recorded as John MacKay and her mother as Emeline. I don't think she was a twin as there was nothing on the record to suggest that she and her sibling were twins. I think it may be due to the fact that they were newcomers to the parish at the time.

She married a man called John Forster in Gretna Green in 1834, which would suggest she was a child bride if she was really born in 1821! She had several children all over UK from Southampton to Roxbourghshire in Scotland.

I know when she died (in Longtown, Cumbria) but really, I'd love to know more about her parents as her father was recorded on the baptismal record as a 'Gentleman' and that just add more mystery to my ancestor!

If anyone could help me with this particular family, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Lanarkshire / Burial records for Calton residents in 19th Century
« on: Friday 19 February 21 19:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I’ve been wondering where I could find burial records for my 4x great grandfather- John Stewart. He lived at Gallowgate in Calton at the time of his death. He died on 2nd December 1864 from Typhus. But I can’t find a burial record for him and I’m not sure if he was buried nearby or in a pauper grave?

His family included his wife, Rachel nee Alston, children- jemima Stewart, William Stewart, Jane Stewart, Janet Stewart. He also had another child prior to his marriage- James Stewart who’s my 3x great grandfather.

If anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be greatly appreciated.

Scotland / Kirk sessions records
« on: Tuesday 29 September 20 21:17 BST (UK)  »
I’ve downloaded a copy of Kirk sessions records from West Linton parish as it contains a testimonial of my ancestors. However I’m unsure what the testimonial is actually about? I thought it was for their marriage but I’m unsure.

My ancestors are Cecelia Lowrie and John Ramsay. I’ve attached a copy of the downloaded record. Hopefully someone will explain the intricacies of the records!

Northumberland / Look Up Request- Marriage in Tynemouth
« on: Sunday 05 January 20 22:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

This might be a long shot but I was wondering if someone can do a look up or have already done a look up for a marriage certificate for a marriage between a Martha A T Stewart and William W Blyth in Tynemouth in 1930?

I suspect Martha is my 2x great aunt, who was born in Moffat in Scotland in 1889. She moved to England and was working as a domestic servant for a family in Gateshead in the 1911 Census. But my family had no further records on her whereabouts, except for a brief mention in her twin brother's will, after he was killed in action in Flanders in 1918. The will stated that she was living in Gateshead in 1918 so I can only assume that she stayed in England since then. I'm hoping that there will be a copy of the marriage certificate which will confirm the identity of this Martha's father thus matching Martha to my Martha.

Thanks

Hello,

I've found a death certificate for one of my ancestors and it was noted that he'd died from 'concussion to the brain and shock to the nerves system after being thrown' but I cannot seem to work out what exactly it was that he was thrown from.

Would be much appreciated if anyone could help me with this?

Much thanks.

Ayrshire / Confusion over place of birth.
« on: Saturday 06 April 19 17:44 BST (UK)  »
I've been looking at the censuses of my 4x Great Grandmother- Agnes Gray nee McClounan (the maiden name can varies). In a couple of censuses, it was mentioned that she was born in Straiton Between 1806 and 1811, but when I looked up the birth records and the record that match closely as possible was for a Agnes McLeownan, born in Maybole in 1809.

So I was wondering if it is possible for someone born in Straiton to be registered in Maybole because they fall under the same parish or not? I remember seeing a website that explain how the old parishes worked but I can't seem to find it anymore.

World War One / London Scottish 2/14 Battalion in October 1918
« on: Friday 09 November 18 23:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Might seems like a long shot but I've discovered earlier this year, that my 2x great Uncle James Stewart was killed in action in the Flanders (not sure if France or Belgium but I'm sticking with the latter). He was with London Scottish and died on 14th October 1918. He's buried in Derry House Cemetery 2 near Ypres.

I was wondering if anyone know any information about what his battalion was doing that day and whereabouts they were roughly that fateful day.

Also I'd appreciate if anyone could tell me if it would be possible to get a photo of him (if it was taken by the british Army when he first enlisted) from London Scottish Museum or IWM? My family has no photo of him and this year was the first time we learned of his death.

Graveyards and Gravestones / Scottish Graveyards
« on: Sunday 07 October 18 20:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm not sure if this has already been discussed before, but is there any websites that specifically focuses on graveyards in Scotland? I've been on Find a Grave in Scotland website but it seems to be defunct now?

Cheers.

Census and Resource Discussion / Place of birth on census
« on: Friday 28 September 18 23:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I've been looking at one of my ancestors records and have found them in the cenuses between 1841 to 1871. However this one really confused me as this person appears to have given at least three different countries as her place of birth!

1841- Scotland
1851- no place was recorded
1861- England
1871- Prembrokeshire in Wales

So what i'm asking is if this was a common thing for people to do in the 19th Century, to give different countries as their place of birth? I know that the Censuses were notorious for getting facts wrong but this is ridiculous...
