Australia / Ryerson Index announcement
« on: Monday 18 January 16 06:12 GMT (UK)  »
Some alarming news from the Ryerson Index;-

"It's a good news-bad news report tonight.

"The good news is that we just added 8,646 new records.

"The bad news is that News Corp today removed all their newspapers from Library PressDisplay (LPD). LPD is the web service whereby NLA and the various State Libraries provide online versions of newspapers via their eResources sites, with up to 12 months of back issues available. Both current editions and all back issues were removed with no notice to users. For full details of how it impacts Ryerson, please see our website."

Armed Forces / James Dixon, 4th Light Dragoons

I have tried, before, to find this fellow in the National Archives' records, ... but without success, ... So I wonder if anyone else can see what's clearly not obvious to me?

James was born around 1790 in "St. Andrew, London" according to the 1831(?) Census. he married Hannah Maria Howard, and after the birth of a son (James, died in infancy) and a daughter (Maria Eliza) they went with the 4thLDs to India, where another four children were born (Catherine Amelia, Charles Dalbiac Wildey,  Emma Louisa and - I think! - George Hart who also died in infancy). Another daughter, Emily Jane, was born after their return to England, where they lived in Poplar, and James became an Inspector of Docks Police (Dixon of Dock Green?   ;D).

However hard I search, I can't find any records for him in TNA's military records. I haven't searched for a while, admittedly, and I'm just getting back into my FH, so ... any ideas?

BTW, I have managed to find records in the newspapers for his various promotions within the LDs, but it's any official military records I'd like to find

Thanks in advance.

I wonder if anyone can find this marriage?  Sadly, GR and I parted ways, some time back, but by a convoluted path (which I'm not even sure I could reproduce!  :o ) I've found this, about halfway down the page; -

... and, obviously, GR wants me to pay to access the record.  This is incredibly frustrating! Previous to finding this, I'd suspected that my Emily Jane ("youngest daughter of James Dixon, Esq, late of the 4th Light Dragoons") married her deceased sister's husband, Thomas Massa, possibly in France or somewhere overseas, after sister Mariah Eliza died in 1875.  However if there's a newspaper record of her marriage in Plaistow, Essex, in 1876, I'd love to see it!  It could settle the question.

Can anyone help, please?

Technical Help / Why did Skype disappear? COMPLETED -Thanks Falkyrn!
« on: Wednesday 05 March 14 06:07 GMT (UK)  »
I have a feeling this has happened before ... when I opened Skype today, it said it was updating ... then despite me telling it not to, it turned off my Avast, and locked up the computer.  I shut it down manually, then waited a while and re-started, ... and Skype had disappeared.

Why would that have happened?

I had to download it again and reinstall  ::)

The Lighter Side / Awwwwwwwwwww!

Just found this ... obviously this couple weren't going to let themselves be beaten by the churches of the time!

The photo is described as "Graves of a Catholic woman and her Protestant husband, who were not allowed to be buried together. Roermond, NL, 1888"

Have been chased out of the local Library again ... imagine, they wanted to go home!  >:(

Try as I might, I cannot find the Parish Register entry for the above marriage, although it's officially registered (1d/862).  Would "registry office" marriages have been an option, in that era?  ???

**Edited!  The marriage was at Lambeth!  Should I be asking on the Surrey board, instead? **

The Common Room / Who Are These People? - COMPLETED, THANK YOU!

While I was at the Library yesterday, I discovered that my grandfather's name comes up as being on four "public" Ancestry trees ... and I have no idea who the owners of the trees are.  If I clicked on their names to bring up said trees (rather than clicking on grandad's name), I couldn't find the connection.  However if I clicked on grandad's name, his very short tree came up ... and one of the trees had my mother and her brother - albeit listed as "private".

I'm curious as to how I could contact the tree owners?  I don't have access to Ancestry, except through the Library?  I tried clicking various places on the pages, but didn't get anywhere.

Technical Help / What's this new "header" on RC?
« on: Monday 15 April 13 09:45 BST (UK)  »
Just noticed that the two lines in the pic below -  "Census and Electoral Rolls", "Search Military Records" -  now appear at the top of my RC page ... but when I click on any of the dates or the Military Records heading, a new window opens, and nothing loads ... the liddle icon thingy just keeps goin' around an' around ad nauseum.

Anyone know what it's supposed to do?  ???
