The Lighter Side / Quick question
« on: Sunday 26 August 18 18:59 BST (UK)  »
Just been looking at a few census returns..and I noticed that my mother’s maiden name was crossed out and her married name written in. Then that married name was crossed out and her new married name written in. She is obviously just a child in this one..also the dates of her 2 marriages are in the left hand column.
Who would have don’t this and why? And what does the black stripe with record officially closed mean?

I have found in 1881 census for my great garndmother, that she has a stepson living with her and her husband and a bro in law.
The census is 1881 Crakehall
Amos Hodgson  head age 27 b. snape ag labourer
Eliza Hodgson     wife       27      bullermoor
George Peacock  stepson   4      Soberhill York
William Peacock   bro in law  9    Under Cotcliff York

My great grans maiden name was Peacock, and i am trying to find out if the stepson George is her son from a previous relationship or !?
I have not yet found the parents or siblings for Eliza...i think her parents could be John Peacock and Ann Blackburn, i am still looking for info to back this up.
Thanks for any light you can shed on this!

Durham Lookup Requests / confused
« on: Sunday 28 December 08 20:40 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking at a census that someone on here found for me, so i have copied it below.
I am easily confused  ;D anyway, they are my G Grandparents
I have found the marriage of a Margaret F Astin and Amos Lawton at Sunderland in 1888.
The thing is the census is hard to read, and the census below contains some children with the surname Hasten and states they are the wifes children, meaning this is Amos Lawtons 2nd wife, his 1st i believe was called Alice and died.
Anyway, the children on the census, looks like Hasten/Masten/Master..but doesnt look like Astin!
So could it be that her maiden name was Astin and her married name was that of the childrens surnames, or is it just too confusing for you too  :-X
I am sure i am on the right Amos Lawton, as there are not many men with that name around those parts at the time  ;D
I know his son was an Amos (my Grandad) i think its him as age 9 son in census below! he was born 1882, and also his son was Amos (my dad)  ::)
I know that the Lawton men originated from Staffordshire. I am tomorrow going to send off for the marriage cert of the above mentioned couple to see if it can shed any light.
Sorry if i have totally confused you too  :o
