Europe / Tracing Bohemian/ Czech ancestors
« on: Thursday 04 April 19 10:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am looking for Oscar Zenker, he was born in 1889 in Katharinaberg, now in Czech, but then in Bohemia.
He emigrated to England in 1910 with his 2 step brothers (with the surname Kopke).

Do you know how I can trace his ancestors?

I have had a look at the Czech websites and so far, no luck  (I am a beginner and don't speak the language!)

Thanks in advance

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / John Hale in High Wycombe
« on: Sunday 03 February 19 16:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am stuck on a man named John Hale.
The census records show that he was born around 1805 in High Wycombe. He married Sarah Brown in 1828. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions please?
Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / William Swans in Hadstock
« on: Wednesday 21 November 18 11:25 GMT (UK)  »
Could anyone help please?

There were 2 William Swans born in Hadstock around the same time
1. b.1807 to Robert Swan and Mary (Scotcher)
2. b.1806 to Samuel Swan and Mary (Bye)

one William married Sarah (also with the surname Swan) in 1827 Hadstock
the other married Rebecca Pearson 1829

I'm interested in the one that married Sarah. They were given a removal order in 1829 and moved to Woodditton in Cambridgeshire.

There were also 3 Sarah Swans born around the same time
1. b.1804 to Robert Swan and Mary Scotcher
2. b.1806 to John Swan and Alice Marsh
3. b.1807 to John Swan and Jane Free

How do I confirm which William and which Sarah?
I checked on SEAX website a while ago (I signed up for a week's membership) and no details of the marriage records came up.

Thank you

Berkshire / James Deacon in Berkshire conundrum
« on: Sunday 30 September 18 11:45 BST (UK)  »
A bit of a conundrum -

I have a set of 18 children all born in East Ilsley (small village in Berkshire), with the parents James Deacon and Sarah.

There are 3 possible James Deacon births and 2 possible marriages to Sarah. (b.1772,1782 and 1787) and then to Sarah Harris and Sarah Vellewise, there is also a Sarah Stanmore marriage nearby.

b.1772 - m.Sarah Harris 1799 - on the find my grave website they are both listed - Sarah d.1837 and James d.1850. It says they have 15 children born to this union. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/45661611/james-deacon

One of the confusing parts is the census records. The 1841 census shows James living with children Ann, Henry, Jesse and Amos...he also appears on the 1851 census with Amos, Jesse, a different wife and lodgers. On both of these censuses, his birth appears to be a different James - around 1790 and James (b.1772) died in 1850, so he wouldn't be on the 1851 Census.
There was a James Deacon born in 1787 in the same village (different parents).

So, the same children as listed on the find a grave side, living with a different James Deacon?

Is there any way that I can be sure that the children share the same parents (James Deacon and Sarah Harris)? as there are 2 particular children that I would like to check if they are siblings - as they seem to have children who marry,

I hope that makes some sense.

Thank you

Family History Beginners Board / I'm a bit stuck
« on: Friday 14 September 18 09:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have been following a trail of (now passed) relative's stories and looking at the records...and I'm already a bit stuck!

A man named John Hopper b.1/6/1858 Plymouth  - according to navy records and relative
it seems he married twice 1 - to Ellen Cook in 1880 and 2 - to Florence Helson in 1918

On GRO, there is only 1 John Hopper born in Plymouth in that time, birth registered in 1859, mother's maiden name - Counter

Can anyone find a marriage between a Hopper and a Counter? Or any idea how I can find more information about his parents?

A John Hopper appears on the 1871 Census with William and Mary Ann Hopper, although I can't seem to find a marriage certificate for Wm and Mary

Thank you

Family History Beginners Board / ancestry trees and tracing further back
« on: Monday 03 September 18 20:48 BST (UK)  »
I'm still learning!

I look at ancestry trees but I don't take them for granted....especially if there are no specific source citations.

Anyway, I am seeing if I can trace a William James any further back. He was born in Bromyard, Herefordshire around 1760-1770. He married Susanna in 1794. On find my past, there are 3 different Williams born in that time. On the ancestry family trees, several of them state William's parents as John James and Hester Parton...not sure how to confirm that (other than messaging them). So, am a bit stuck. Do you have any suggestions please?

Family History Beginners Board / tracing a common name
« on: Thursday 30 August 18 12:38 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for someone with the surname 'Jones'...(Henry Jones)

I have his marriage certificate, which lists his father as Henry

The 1939 register lists his birth date (1872)  and the 1911 census shows his place of birth (Herefordshire)...on the GRO site is a potential and it says - mother's maiden name - nothing

What is the next step? I'm assuming if I order his birth cert it won't tell me any more as I already know his father

Thanks

I am looking for an Arthur S Stone, so far all I can find is his marriage to Mavis R Hogg in 1933 in Wycombe. A Sidney Arthur Stone comes up in familysearch, but not sure how to confirm it. For some reason I am unable to find any more certain details. Any ideas?
