Monmouthshire / House Schedules for Garndiffaith and Abersychan in the 1850's
« on: Tuesday 17 April 18 09:58 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find how close a number of families were living by each other. The most I have to go off is the Schedule number on the 1851 Census.

Garndiffaith Schedules: 29, 93, 106, 180

Abersychan Schedules: 63, 113, 139

Pontnewynydd (St Luke District) Schedule: 12, No 2 Butlers houses. (*Police station house was schedule 10* which itself was next to the Underwoods Cottages)

They all sound like they could be close to one another. I just can't place where in general area that they were in. Does someone here know the area better?

Census and Resource Discussion / Finding the Robbins families in the 1861 Census.
« on: Monday 16 April 18 12:00 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to chase down a pair of families that were living in Trevethin in 1841 and 1851. They left for Australia in 1864, together, but I can't find them in any census online for 1861. It's like everyone went into hiding that year. Or maybe someone's handwriting is too atrocious to transcribe that year. It's hard to know.

I presume they're unsearchable though the new means, and I'd have to run through the old books page by page in that area. Are there any tips on how to narrow that task down?

The family is Job and Martha Cleaves (nee Robbins).

In 1851. Martha's married, and her brother George Robbins lives with her.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGTL-FC8

In the same year, Her parents George and Sarah Robbins live down the road with the rest of the family.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGTL-F8G

By 1861. I'd presume they'd still be in Trevethin, Monmouthshire. The Cleaves should have 7 or 8 children with them at this point. The parents George and Sarah Robbins might have only their son John Robbins living with them still.

Martha's brother Isaac Robbins would be married with Ann and have a child named Mary Ann. Age 5 or so. I haven't found him either.

All the other siblings have left for Australia already.

Job Cleaves is from High Littleton, Somerset, Martha is from Trevethin, Monmouthshire. Does anyone had have an idea how I'd find them?

New Zealand Completed Requests / The theories of Alexander Edward Fox in New Zealand
« on: Tuesday 06 February 18 07:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there. I'm trying to build a timeline and trying to build up a timeline for my family. I'm having some doubts and confused over little bits that I've found and trying to rule out. I'll post the timeline first.

4th April 1904
The earliest concrete thing I have about Alexander Edward Fox is that he married in St Paul’s Church, Christchurch, New Zealand, age 27 from Perth WA. He was salesman living 88 Salisbury Street Christchurch.

His wife Marie Elisabeth Schaner (Marie Elizabeth Schauer) was age 24 was born in Gippsland, Victoria, living 17 Etin Place, Christchurch.

The concrete facts.

1907 Son Leslie born in Christchurch
???Alexander sometime moves to Victoria Australia???
1909 Alexander lives Melbourne as a “traveller”
1910 Daughter Constance was born in Melbourne
1912 Son Leonard was born.
1914 The Foxes having moved and his occupation now ‘Manager’ in Malvern East, Victoria

Rudolph Schauer’s WW1 papers have his sister Mrs Fox as living in Malvern, Victoria. Then crossed out and updated it with % N.Z Farmers (gpo?) Ashburton. Rudolph’s brother Carl was his employer before he joined the army. Living with him at his place Clyde Quay Hotel, Wellington.

------------------------------------------------
This next part is a little sketchy.
What’s confusing is why on the WW1 1916, Alexander appears as a Publican & living in Ashburton. I thought that might have meant he might have tried his hand in bar work and that he was the A E Fox with the licence to the Pioneer Hotel.

June-1915 Mr A E Fox joins the local telephone exchange No 59, Pioneer Hotel. Hokitika

December 1915 Alexander applies for a licence for the Pioneer Hotel, Hokitika. It’s granted the next month. It was a new building (By 1918 is has changed hands)
My trouble is Hokitika, New Zealand is on the other side of the Island?

Sometime 1916 - Appears on the NZ Army Roll - Publican. Care of NZ Co-Operatrive, Ashburton.

March 1916 (Only 2 months later) - Had advertisement in the Ashburton paper looking for a lost item. At Farmer’s Co.op

------------------------------------------------

Back to the Concrete facts.

1919 – Alexander Appears on Two addresses in two of the same year’s electoral rolls.
* - 110 Moore Street, Ashurton Canterbury, NZ
* - The British Hotel, Lyttleton, Canterbury, NZ

March 1919, Farmers Co-op Association of Canterbury was asked by A E Fox to auction off 110 Moore Street property. 6 Bedroom home

The 1919 Electoral Roll had several names living at ‘Webbs’ British Hotel on different pages. H Webb being the proprietor who had the licence between June 1919 and Sept 1922

1. Alexander Edward Fox
2. Marie Elizabeth fox
3. Annie Catherine Webb - Marie's sister
4. Harold William Webb - Proprietor
5. Annie Davey - Marie and Annie's Mother.

Alexander possibly had sold his house and had planned to stay a few weeks at Marie’s sisters place, who lived in her Husband’s British Hotel, taking care of their mother Annie Davey.

Aug 1919. Ashburton Guardian
“Mr A E Fox - of the Hardware department of the Ashburton Branch of N.Z Farmer’s Co-op., LTD  transfers to Blenheim. Co-Workers gave him and his wife a travelling rub and a Wedgewood cream and sugar service.

1924 Daughter Gwen is born in Christchurch

1925 Annie Davey, nee Schauer/Born Clark passes away in Christchurch.
Her funeral took place at 15 River Road, Avonside.

1926, An October paper mentions Marie Fox to visit Australia with her Daughter for a few week holiday. Passenger list on the Manuka to Melbourne 22/10/1962 has both on board. M E Fox and Gwen.
1928- Alexander is living at 15 River Road, Avon, Canterbury, NZ

The move to Australia

July 1928 Son Leslie Fox Takes the Ulimaroe to Sydney on his own. Salesman 21
November 9th 1928. Leonard Fox aged 17, takes the Maheno to Sydney.
November 12th 1928. An Auction is held at his house to sell all of his stuff (found in newspaper)

November 16th, 1928. Alexander, Marie and Gwen travel on the Ulimaroa. From Christchurch to Sydney
   Alex 52 Hardware Manager
   Mare 47 Domestic Duties.
   Child (Gwen) 4yr Old.
Unsure where their other daughter, Elsie Meryl Constance Fox went, but she appears in NSW few years later.

New Zealand Completed Requests / The Schauer family's Migration to New Zealand
« on: Monday 05 February 18 23:42 GMT (UK)  »
This family relates to my Prussian and Irish ancestors who raised their family in Victoria, Australia and for some reason all migrated out to New Zealand. It overlaps with some other threads I’ve been in. The Parents were Herman Julius Schauer and Annie Clark, who married in Victoria and had a big family.

1872. Herman Julius Schauer
1874. Carl Albert Schauer “Charlie”
1876. Annie Catherine Schauer
1877. Frederick William Schauer
1879. Marie Elizabeth Schauer (My line)
1881. Auguste Fredericka Schauer
1885. Gustave Rudalph Schauer

From what I can tell. Their daughter Auguste died as a child and father Herman died in 1888.

His wife Annie remarried to a John Davey in 1890 and have a one child, although it has the father on the cert as Julius, when he’d been dead for years and Annie already remarried.

1894 Maria Elizabeth Schauer

Not sure what happened to John Davey. The next time I spot any of them, they are in New Zealand appearing on Papers pleasem working in hotels, getting elected, fighting in the First World War. Getting married, having kids, ect. I always wondered what became of Annie’s youngest daughter to John, and how the Schauer family made it out to New Zealand. It was only chance that I found Annie Davey living with her daughter Marie Elizabeth Fox an Annie Catherine Webb in the same hotel. 1919.

So far I’ve found a man named Mr Schauer (single, laborour) leaving Melbourne for Wellington 23 Aug 1907 on the Wimmera. He was 36, which makes him born 1871. I think this is the Eldest, Herman Julius.

The Schauer family must have been out there earlier though, since Marie married in 1904 and Annie 1907. Annie and Marriage marriage certs appear under the name Schaner. Took me a long time to break through from Schaner to Schauer. Amazing luck I broke through with wildcards in the Vic BDM.

The earliest marriage is between Carl Schauer and his wife Ellen Goodwin in 1901.
Frederick seemed like the only one who stayed in Victoria.

New Zealand Completed Requests / The Illegitimate child of James Stephenson
« on: Wednesday 31 January 18 07:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I've a tricky one in my family.

It seems my relative Agnes Patton Fullbrook had an affair with with a man named James Stephenson, which resulted in the dissolution of her marriage and a child by the name of Margaret Howard Fullbrook in Napier, New Zealand 1892. The way I know about James is that he appears on the Divorce records as a Co-respondent, and her having a child with him.

Hawkes Bay Herald of 17 February 1896:
"Mr Justice Buckley held a sitting of the Divorce Court on Saturday. William Fullbrook,
represented by Mr Lusk, obtained a divorce from his wife Agnes Fullbrook (James Stevenson
co-respondent). The evidence of petitioner showed that twice the respondent sold up all the
furniture in the house and cleared out and that subsequently she admitted having got into
trouble with Stephenson, the result being an illegitimate child, registered as such at the
Napier registry office. The custody of the children will be the subject of another application
at the next sittings."

Notice the spelling here in Stevenson.

Agnes Retaining her married name after the divorce. She was 43 When she had Margaret.

Assuming James Stephenson was about the same age, He'd be about 40-50 when this happened. Apparently he was a Waiter at the Club Hotel in Masterton, New Zealand, so a relative found out. But I don't know how I'll go about proving it.

There's a James Stephenson dying in 1907 aged 66. Making him 51 when Margaret was born. The James who died in 1907 may not even be the right one. He could have moved to Australia like Agnes later did. There's no record of him being born in New Zealand. There's no sign he married either. There are 3-4 candidates based on his age, but I'm undecided. I haven't ordered any forms since I'm not sure what I'm looking for.

This is a tough one for me. What else can I do to find out more about this James Stephenson/James Stevenson?

Europe / My Prussian relative and his origins
« on: Wednesday 31 January 18 04:46 GMT (UK)  »
This is a very difficult one for me. I don't know how to follow up on European family.

My relative is Herman Julius Schauer.

His marriage cert has him born in Stettin, Prussia about 1839. His parents written down were Carl Schauer and Auguste Hertz.

A better piece of info comes from his marriage cert to his first wife Charlotte Auguste Tugedrich Buhro in 1863.
On that certificate he has his father down as Carl Heinrich Schauer
This marriage was in Prenzlau, Brandenburg, Preuben (Prussia?)

I say first wife, because I believe he skipped the country after the birth and death of his son in 1868.

Charlotte Auguste Tugendreich Schauer is seen marrying again in 1886 in the same city that she married Herman Julius Schauer. Herman probably skipped town after the loss of a child.

I haven't found a marriage for his parents, but I did find a Marie Malwine Wilhelmine Schauer born 6 Sept 1840 in Stettin, Pommern, Prussia to the parents Carl Heinrich Schauer and Julie Augueste (I'm certain i saw the name Hertz included there, but it'd need to double check)

Is there much more information about the family I can infer from this information?

Down / Moore and Duff families of Killyleagh, Down.
« on: Wednesday 31 January 18 04:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hey!

Another mystery here. I've found my GG Grandother Agnes Patton Moore migrating to New Zealand from Ireland with her likely sister Eliza Jane Duff Moore who was one year older. Agnes was born about 1849 and Eliza 1848 from Down.

When Eliza died, it showed her parents as William Moore and Mary Ann Duff of County Down.

I found a Marriage between William Moore and Mary Anne Duff in Killyleagh, Down, Ireland 15 July 1842.
There were lots of Baptisms of Moore children with those parents. The earliest being Samuel Duff Moore 1849, Presbyterian, Killyleagh, Down, Ireland.
Agnes and Eliza were born before him but there are no Baptism records on the sources I've used for them. Word from the family is, Agnes and Eliza had two more sisters named Margaret and Elizabeth who came to Australia.

I may be reaching, but there's a Mary Duff born 9 May 1825 in Dromore Parish, Down. Parents William Duff and Isabella Jones. But it's guess work after this point.

Is there anything wrong with my logic to assume these William Moore and Mary Ann Duff are indeed the right parents, given what I already know? It's hard when the births are before 1850. I don't know what other resources I could use to paint a better picture. Can anyone please put me on the right path?

Wicklow / The Clark and Talbot families of Wicklow
« on: Wednesday 31 January 18 03:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

I've got a mysterious GG Grandmother, Annie Clark. She arrived in Australia from Ireland and married an Prussian man.

On her Marriage cert. It says she was born about 1849, from Wicklow, Ireland. Her parents being Charles Clark, a publican, and Catherine Talbot

I found a baptism for Ann Clark in Blackditches, Wicklow, Ireland 12 Aug 1850 with the parents Chas Clark and Cath Talbott
Other things on the cert were Parish Variants: Boystown, Valleymount. and Diocese: Dublin.

I think the might have left London to Melbourne in 1871 on the Malleny. She was a 20 yr old Irish girl. She traveled over as a servant in a group of 6. Robert Clark the eldest at 34, a miner, two male farmers aged 23, Ann, and two other servants with the name Smith. I'm not sure whether Robert Clark is an older bother, young uncle or a cousin. Maybe no relation?

I don't know anything else about her Parents, which would be nice to know more about them. I know there was a place called Talbotstown in County Wicklow back then. I don't have access to them, but there are 1852 land assessments there for a Charles Clark, and another for Richard Talbott. These were of the Parish Boystown.

I've found no marriage or birth certs of either Charles or Catherine, or whether they had any other children, or where they may have died. Does someone with more resources than I know what to do next?

Hi everyone. I'm stuck with history of my Great Grandfather. Joseph Henry Sydney.
He was born in Howrah, Calcutta, Bengal India 9 Oct 1886.
He was baptized there a little over a month later. His parents given were George and Mary Sydney.

He eventually moved to Australia. Where on his marriage cert in 1912 showed his parents as George Sydney and Mary Quinliven, with his birthplace as Calcutta. His death cert has the same parents listed.

I found a British man named J H Sydney arriving to Fremantle, Western Australia from Singapore on a ship called the Minderoo. 25th November 1910. I assume that if he grew up his whole life in Asia, that he would arrive from an Asian country.

There was a marriage between a George Sydney and a widowed Mary Theodore in Rangoon Bengal, India July 1887. Modern day Yangon, Burma. It could be that Mary was previously a Quinliven, but I don't know for sure? That marriage happened nearly one year after Joseph was already born. I hear that's not uncommon back then in those countries, but I can't be sure these George and Mary are the right ones, other than that my great Aunt recalls her mother (Joseph's wife) saying that Joseph may have been educated in Burma.

There is record of a George Sydney dying in Rangoon, Bengal in 1914. This is probably the one from the Wedding there. The marriage cert with Mary Theodore and age on his death cert are a match within a year (1854-1855), and the marriage cert states that his father was a Thomas Sydney. I have no other details. And these were all transcribed either through familysearch and findmypast so I haven't seen what else that certificate might have had written on it.

I don't really know how to proceed. Can someone please kindly give me some ideas where to go from here?
