There are 12 stills of emigrants to Australia from archive footage. The kids in picture number 12 are cute!

Durham / Felling or High Felling
« on: Tuesday 19 June 07 09:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello! I'm from the SE and am unsure of Co Durham geography -- could someone help me please?!

Firstly, is Felling the same place as High Felling?

Secondly, I'm looking for the C of E baptism registers for (High) Felling for 1822/23/24. Genuki seems to suggest that Felling wasn't a parish at that time, but was part of Heworth. Is that right?

Finally, does anyone know if (High) Felling - or should that be Heworth? - baptism registers for 1822-24 have been published on CD or microfiche?

Thanks for any help!

Technical Help / Digital camera
« on: Saturday 14 October 06 13:07 BST (UK)  »
I'm thinking of buying a digital camera specifically to photograph gravestone MIs. Is anyone able to recommend a camera please, or has anyone seen a family history magazine or website article reviewing digital cameras for this purpose?

Thanks, everyone!

Kent / Item from "Faversham Times" re Marsh
« on: Friday 10 March 06 21:30 GMT (UK)  »
"Plea to preserve tribute to Great War soldier.
DESCENDANTS of a First World War soldier are being asked to come forward, to save a plaque put up in his memory.
The urgent request to relatives of Sidney George Marsh comes from Mr John
Rowe, a regional volunteer for the War Memorials Trust and fieldworker for the Imperial War Museum.
He has discovered that the marble plaque in Dunkirk Church will be lost to the public, unless Mr Marsh's relatives give approval for it to be moved.
Twenty-five-year-old Sidney George Marsh of the Royal East Kent Rifles was found dead in France on August, 1918, after being reported missing for some time. As well as the mention in Dunkirk church, his name is included on the village war memorial.
Any relatives of Mr Marsh are urged to call Mr Rowe on 01795 421446 as soon as possible."

Is anyone related, or can anyone help?

The Common Room / Greyscale v black & white images
« on: Wednesday 14 September 05 10:31 BST (UK)  »
I've searched on the forum but can't seem to find anything about the difference between greyscale and black & white scanned images (as used on the web and on CD-Roms for census pages, BMD indexes, old directories etc).

I don't know much about scanning and have two questions:

Can anyone please tell me what the difference (to the researcher) is between greyscale and black & white?

Also, do you prefer greyscale or black & white, or doesn't it make a difference to you?

Thanks for any help!

The Common Room / A warning about buying BMD certs
« on: Monday 14 March 05 08:45 GMT (UK)  »
I hope none of us have been duped by this website:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/guardian_jobs_and_money/story/0,,1435522,00.html

When the page opens, scroll down about half way to the second letter, which is called "Is this fraud or Net loss?"

The letter was posted on The Guardian website (and was in the nespaper itself) on 12th March 2005: I assume it will stay up there for at least a week.

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Kent 1841 census -- Seasalter & Whitstable
« on: Sunday 14 November 04 15:10 GMT (UK)  »
If anyone has the 1841 Kent census on CD-Rom, I would be very grateful if you could check to see whether any parts of the adjacent parishes of Seasalter & Whitstable (in Blean registration district) survive and are included on it, or whether they are lost in their entirety.

Thanks very much.

The Common Room / Origins
« on: Sunday 07 November 04 16:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone...

I've been wondering about British Origins for a while and would be interested in others' experiences and advice... Is it worthwhile? Is it hit or miss, or does it have records which are good no matter which area of the country you are interested in? Basially: what do you get for your money (especially that you cannot get elsewhere)?!

Thanks!
