Australia / William Thomas marriage 1930
« on: Wednesday 07 December 16 15:51 GMT (UK)  »
William Thomas married a Scots lass whom he met on the boat from Britain. The ceremony is said to have taken place in Sydney in 1930, but I don't know the bride's name. Can anyone help? William was from Bargoed in old South Wales, if that helps.
      Fingers crossed!
        Regards,

Monmouthshire / George Pembridge of Monmouth
« on: Friday 22 April 16 17:20 BST (UK)  »
I am wondering if anyone can tell me what happened to George Henry Pembridge, born in Monmouth on 30.12.1891, who was a professional boxer in the years around World War I and was Welsh middleweight champion for a few months in 1920.
His last traced fight was in April 1923 and after that - silence! I have found no sign of a marriage, while the only death is registered in Bridgend in Oct-Dec 1967. This is probably the George H. Pembridge who was living in Porthcawl according to the 1939 Register, but he gave his birth date as 11.11.1892 and must presumably be a different person.
      Here's hoping!

Pembrokeshire / Ocky Davies, boxer
« on: Sunday 29 June 14 15:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm trying to discover some background regarding Ocky Davies, from Haverfordwest, who boxed professionally in the 1920s and 1930s. He claimed on his licence application (Nov 1932) to be 22. I believe his real name was William David and in 1930 he was living at West Hill Farm, Steynton, Milford Haven.
He was apparently a milkman by trade. Was the name Ocky traditionally given to milkmen - I'm thinking of "Ocky Milkman" in Dylan Thomas's 'Under Milk Wood'  :D - or was it short for something?
     Can anyone help?
        Regards, Gareth

Australia / Randolph Chelminsky Jones
« on: Friday 11 October 13 15:23 BST (UK)  »
This is very much a shot in the dark. The gentleman in question was born on Feb 12, 1911 at Pontardulais, near Swansea in old South Wales. If I have the right man, he married a Hilda Cann in 1932. Sometime after 1934, he is thought to have emigrated to Australia, where he may have become a policeman.
I have found no compatable entries on passenger lists, but was wondering whether any Australian records (deaths, perhaps) might have something. I have certainly not found any record of his death in the UK. With a middle name like his, you would have thought something would come up, but he may never have used it.
   Here's hoping  ;)

Australia / Young Griffo - did he have Welsh ancestry?
« on: Tuesday 18 September 12 17:40 BST (UK)  »
Young Griffo, a boxer of legendary defensive skills, was born at Millers Point in Sydney as Albert Griffiths. Some record books give his birth date as March 31, 1871, others suggest April 15, 1869, while his tombstone in New York, where he lived his last years as a drunken derelict, says he was born in 1880.
Could someone confirm the 1871 date and tell me (hopefully the Censuses would have the info) whether his father or grandfather came from Wales? The surname would suggest so, but it would be great to have it confirmed  :)

      Cheers, Gareth

United States of America / Tommy West, died in Louisville, March 21, 1929
« on: Thursday 13 September 12 15:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,
I wonder if anyone can access the details of Tommy's death. I believe he was living with his sister at the time.
Tommy was born in Cardiff, Wales, with a date of birth said to be May 29, 1870, but I can't find any such birth registered - the nearest Thomas West in Cardiff was in 1874. It would be a great help if I knew his full name and age at his death.
I'm not sure what info would be recorded, but anything would be useful  :)
     Cheers, Gareth

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Young Tom - tidy up please
« on: Tuesday 14 August 12 16:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Can some kind person get rid of all the background muck, please, and perhaps clean up Tommy himself? It doesn't matter if he ends up looking like a cut-out - anything would be better than it is!
   Cheers, Gareth

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Can this be rescued?
« on: Monday 13 August 12 20:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks,
This looks a bit of a mess now - is it possible to clean it up at all? If somene could just get rid of the marks on the faces, it would be something.
      Here's hoping.

Bedfordshire / Rees Moore and Kenneth Moore Rowlands
« on: Wednesday 09 May 12 12:32 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace anyone who knew or is related to Rees Moore and/or his nephew, Kenneth Moore Rowlands, each of whom moved from Maerdy in the Rhondda to Luton and had successful careers as professional boxers in the immediate postwar years.
I know Rees and his wife * had five children and that he died in Luton in 1995; I know that Ken married a * in St Albans in 1978. And I'm fine on the details of their boxing careers.
I am hoping to include chapters on both in a forthcoming book on the boxers of the Rhondda and would appreciate any help. As it stands I don't even know whether Ken is still with us - he would be 84.
   Keeping my fingers crossed  ;)
