Lancashire / My Brick Wall concerning Dorothy Harding
« on: Monday 06 March 17 16:27 GMT (UK)  »
My brick wall: suggestions welcome.
Name: Dorothy Harding born 13 June 1921 (source 1939 register) living @ 35 Henrietta Street Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire with her mother, Bertha Wragg nee Harding. I first discovered that my maternal grandmother (Charlotte) Bertha Wragg had another daughter when I sent for Bertha's death cert. Dorothy Harding 'daughter of the deceased' was the informant. (28 May 1947). I was told that my grandmother left her husband and two small children when my mother was abt 2 years old (i.e. about 1919-1920) but we had no idea that there was another child. Until the 1939 register came out I had not managed to find a likely birth for Dorothy Harding/Wragg. Now I had an actual date of birth 13 June 1921 BUT i still have not been able to trace a birth.
Alongside Dorothy's name in 1939 register is an entry CZYZ. I then searched for a marriage for Dorothy and found Jan CZYZ married Dorothy Harding on 30 March 1979 Barton Greater Manchester. I sent for the marriage cert thinking I would find out who Dorothy's father was but that is left blank on the marriage cert. The couple were living at 247 Peel Green Rd, Eccles in 1979. There is a likely death of Jan CZYZ in Feb 1984 in Salford, Lancs giving a date of birth 1 Sept 1913. No death for Dorothy Czyz though. Truly a mystery woman!!!

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Where was Martha in 1911?
« on: Tuesday 08 November 16 12:07 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandmother's sister Martha Belfield had a chequered history. She had at least two children out of wedlock, then married the brother of her employer when she was 6 months pregnant.
Born 16 Feb 1854 Longnor Staffs to Joseph Belfield and Mary Bradbury. Son Benjamin born 1876 Longnor (father not named) Married 1882 in Ashton Under Lyne to Richard Finney, brother of Thomas who farmed Blake Edge, Fairfield Buxton. Richard died in 1890 and Martha was publican of The Bulls Head in Monyash Derbyshire in 1891 census.
In London Gazette July 22 1893 she was named in "Receiving Orders"  Address Thornheyes House, London Rd Buxton.
In London Gazette 1900 30 May 'Notice of Dividends" was posted against her name.
In 1901 widowed Martha is at 9 Rock Terrace Buxton.
Martha died 11 Aug 1920 and is buried with her husband Richard in a fine tomb in Monyash churchyard.
But where was she in 1911?  Cannot trace her at all. She wasn't with any of her children. Can anyone help me with missing piece of the jigsaw, please?

Staffordshire / Biberystone Leek Staffs

My great great grandfather  Abel Goodwin born about 1790 was living at Biberystone  in 1841 census. Haven't been able to trace on maps or by Googling. I wondered if anyone with local knowledge could tell me whereabouts this was. Abel was a coal miner yet he seems to be surrounded by farms.

London and Middlesex / Addresses in St Pancras area
« on: Tuesday 15 March 16 12:05 GMT (UK)  »
I have a possible death of my 2x great uncle, William Copeland (born 9 Sept 1845) in Feb 1872. The death cert shows he died in the Smallpox hospital in Highgate. His occupation was 'engine driver' and his address is given as 34 Railway Cottages, Regents Park, London. In the 1871 census William's father and stepmother William b 1805 and Mary born 1811 were living with Mary's married daughter at 15 Railway Cottages , Marylebone. Are these two addresses likely to have been next to each other, or a completely different set of Railway Cottages?   Thanks for any help.

Canada / Brick Wall- can anyone help me, Please
« on: Sunday 21 December 14 16:31 GMT (UK)  »
I have been searching for my great great Uncle for several years now, with little success. He was JOSEPH COPELAND Born June 8th 1842 Blenkinsopp, Haltwhistle, Northumberland, son of William Copeland 1805-1882 and Elizabeth Pugmire 1811-1853. Joseph disappears from the UK census after 1851. His mother's death in 1853 seems to have meant that the family dispersed. I found a 15 year old Joseph Copeland on board "The Margaret Tyson" departing Liverpool for New York 15 Sept 1857, bound for Upper Canada. The age fits. Also next to his name on the passenger list are seven Graham names. Joseph's older sister Jane Copeland married William Graham, a dyer of Warwick Bridge, nr Carlisle in 1854 (Wetheral Parish Church). I know that Jane and William's children were born in Canada...they eventually went to Australia in 1886 and I have found death records for them which indicate their place of birth.
I have found a possible Joseph Copeland in 1871 living London City Ward 5 Ontario aged 28.

My query is...would Canadian marriage certificates for the period post-1860 show parents' names? That is, if I could find a marriage for Joseph!!
I would be eternally grateful for any advice...on where to start looking.

US Lookup Requests / marriage in Chicago, Cook County
« on: Monday 15 September 14 15:01 BST (UK)  »
Would anyone be able to find a marriage which probably took place in Chicago between 1940 and 1979, please?
William Solomon Harding is shown in 1940 US census at East Grand Ave, Chicago, Cook Co. aged 44 single, occupation dishwasher. In  the same household is Lilian Casey aged 36. I have reason to believe William and Lilian married. William died June 3rd 1979 aged 83 and his widow was Lilian Harding.
I would be most grateful if anyone can pinpoint their marriage.
Thanks

Sussex Lookup Requests / Hastings Marriage 1877
« on: Thursday 03 July 14 17:08 BST (UK)  »
I would be very grateful if someone could look up a marriage between Thomas Foster and Eliza Gain in Hastings 1877. I know Thomas was the son of Joseph Foster and Sarah Gain. Eliza was born abt 1848 Cambridgeshire (source 1881 census) I would like to find out her father's name if possible. I suspect Eliza had been married before as there are two children on 1881 census at same address 9Gensing Rd. Kate born about 1871 Hastings and Frederick born about 1874 Hastings.
With many thanks
