World War Two / RASC - ITALY - Allied Forces HQ
« on: Thursday 16 April 20 12:31 BST (UK)  »
My Grandfather served in the RASC and was involved in the planning of Operation Torch and then further work in Sicily and Italy. I have many of his military possessions and one of them is his pass to AFHQ at Casserta.
He was not based at Casserta but near it and he ran an office of between 6-8 clerks. I am trying to find out anything regards the RASC in this area and especially trying to find photos etc.

Any ideas?

World War Two / The Battle for France
« on: Sunday 17 February 19 16:21 GMT (UK)  »
Mr paternal Grandfather died many years ago but while I was a boy he did tell me some stories from his war.
One I recall him telling me that whilst he was in the Somerset Light Infantry in 1940 they were embarking on a troopship bound for France when the evacuations were taking place. Ultimately they never left and they were dispersed and took on devensive duties in Sussex.
Does anyone know how I could find out more about this story? Were there ships being readied to send troops to another part of France at the time?

World War Two / London Scottish Regiment
« on: Friday 21 December 18 20:38 GMT (UK)  »
My Grandfather was started out in the Somerset Light Infantry and ended the war in the London Scottish Regiment. I recalled a photo of him (I dont have it now) that showed a black cat badge on his shoulder. After doing some research recently I found the to be the 56th London Regiment, its Dick Whittingtons cat.
I have found that the London Scottish regiment was actually part of this, so the two do tie together. I do still have his full uniform, Kilt, sporran and all!

World War Two / WW2 London-Scottish
« on: Tuesday 10 April 18 14:40 BST (UK)  »
One of my Grandfathers ended up in the London Scottish Regiment during WW2, he served in North Africa, Palestine and then Italy. He was Batman to a 'Captain Rowan-Robinson', he always referred to him as 'Crow'! From memory he had been awarded the MC?

World War One / Tank Corps
« on: Saturday 07 April 18 17:51 BST (UK)  »
My Great-Grandfather served in WW1 and in a couple of photos i have he wears insignia of the Royal Engineers.
We have now found out through family members that along with his medals he also has a Tank Corps cap badge.
My question is, were Engineers elisted or volunteering into the newly formed Tank Corps?

My Great Uncle has the abbreviation 'PSH' on his RAF index card, I have searched all my references but can't come up with much.

Any ideas?

World War Two / RAF Records
« on: Wednesday 04 April 18 15:02 BST (UK)  »
A few years back whilst clearing my Grandmothers house after she passed away I found some old photos that intrigued me. One in particular I have found to be of my fathers uncle and it is a wartime portrait photo of him in his RAF uniform.

He passed away in the later forties a year after he was married and he was never really talked about, the surviving family didn't even know he was in the RAF.

I only have his name, Kenneth Hann and his DOB / DOD and the photo, not much to go on.

Can anyone assist or point me in the right direction?
