Europe / Where would I find out where a surname is from?
« on: Monday 11 November 19 21:39 GMT (UK)  »
This may sound odd, but my biological father had an unusual surname and I have no idea where he was born. Does anyone know where I might be able to search for a possible origin?

His surname was SEREDIN. I've been told in the past that he was from Yugoslavia, but other than that I have no other information. I know he was born Apr 1947 and he died June 2019. IF anyone can point me in a direction for searching I'd be grateful

Essex / William Hollingsworth marriage
« on: Wednesday 01 August 18 12:20 BST (UK)  »
I've hit a brick wall and need a bit of help. The gentleman in the attached screenshot is the 3x Great Grandfather of my friend who I'm trying to help do a tree for. Now, the problem is this: I found his father's name on his marriage record (William Hollingsworth) and by searching the GRO I found the only record possible for his birth, mother's maiden name shown as COLLEN (listed as COLLIN on other possible births from the same time period). Problem is that I'm having no luck finding a marriage record for his mother and father, by searching either using his father's full name or his mother's maiden surname. I've also tried FreeBMD with no luck. Help!! Please?? I'm at a loss of where to look next.

The Common Room / Deceased uncle hospitalisation
« on: Thursday 19 April 18 13:36 BST (UK)  »
I'm wondering if there is any way to discover proof that an uncle of mine (who died as an infant) was actually brought over from County Cork to London in the 1940's? Other than finding a death record in Surrey, I've found nothing.

I once saw a photo of him and know the probable cause of death but wondered if I can access any sort of medical/hospital history. The attached screenshots are literally everything I have.

I'm having a few issues with my 2x Great Grandmother. According to birth records of her children her maiden name was Miles, so using this I went in search of her birth record, I assumed that her name was Martha Mary Miles..... nothing found across a span of 20 years on the General Records Office website at all. Then I decided to double check it by taking out the middle name and just looking for a Martha Miles over the same time period.

Lo and behold, I find a Martha SARAH Miles born in 1851, registered in Shoreditch, London. My question is...... is it a common thing for someone to completely change their middle name? I've not come across it with anyone else in my tree before. Admittedly, I do have some relations who went by their middle names instead of their first, but this was to avoid confusion with other family members who had the same first name. My Grandad and my Uncle had the same first name, my Uncle was known by his middle name, but all official documents have all his names on them.

This is a first for me and I'm at a loss of what to do as there are no other marriages for my 2x Great Grandfather. Any help/advice greatly appreciated

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Photo of my Dad circa 1957
« on: Sunday 15 April 18 21:19 BST (UK)  »
This photo is of my Dad, he passed on in 2010. I've been trying to get the damage cleaned up but I'm not the best at photo restoration. Is there anyone who can have a go for me? It's the only copy I have of it and would love to have an undamaged version. It's the only version I have, I know it would be better if it was an "edge to edge" scan, but this was sent to me by my brother who scanned it himself.

And if anyone is able to colourise, his eyes were blue/grey, his hair was dark brown almost black and his skin was permanently tanned from working outside as per the second picture. The uniform I believe is Royal Engineers 1950's as I'm told this was taken during his National Service. I'm not sure how/if the uniforms have changed much over the years
