Cork / Edward Donovan
« on: Sunday 31 July 22 10:54 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone help me try to find the birth or baptism record for EDWARD DONOVAN? It states on one census (when he is a prisoner) that his birth was in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, however, I don't believe this is the case. I believe he was born in Cork. (Possibly Selleham, Dunmanway).

Edward was born approx. 1830 to parents TIMOTHY DONOVAN (1801) and ELLEN MCCARTHY (1801). Timothy and Ellen definitely have two children, TIMOTHY/THADY (approx. 1829) and CATHERINE (approx. 1838). I am still researching into possible other children. The family, from Cork, move to Brighton when Catherine is a toddler.

I found, on Ancestry, from someone else's tree, that Timothy and Ellen had another child called Edward. Myself and the lady whose tree Edward is in are a DNA match (3rd cousins twice removed). Her route is through Edward, mine through Catherine.

Edward changed his name to EDWARD DUNN when he was arrested in his early twenties I believe.

I can find baptism records for Catherine and Timothy/Thady, but I simply cannot find one for Edward. Not in the UK or Ireland. Help!

Thanks in advance.

Lancashire / Birth help - HIGHAM
« on: Tuesday 13 July 21 12:26 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for help in locating a birth record or any information relating to the early life of JOHN HIGHAM, born in Manchester in approx 1807.

I know a great deal about John's later life when he moved to Birmingham in the 1830s (his second son, Thomas, is born in 1837 in Birmingham), but I am missing information regarding his birth and earlier life.

From what I know he is born in Manchester in approx 1807. He marries Elizabeth Robinson on 15 April 1827 in Saint John, Limerick, Ireland. The record states 24th regiment so he is obviously part of the military at this point.

Elizabeth Robinson is born approx 1804 in Handsacre, Staffordshire.

John and Elizabeth's 1st son, John Richardson Higham is born in Manchester in 1829. John is employed as a clerk at Manchester Town Hall at this time.

John, Elizabeth and John Jnr then move to Birmingham at some point during the 1830s where they go on to have more children, all with the middle name of RICHARDSON. I would also love to find out where this name come from. (Thomas, Hannah, Elizabeth and William).

Elizabeth passes away in 1857 and John marries again and has more children. These children do not have the Richardson middle name.

Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Warwickshire / Help me piece Nellie Pagett into the family...
« on: Thursday 18 February 21 15:17 GMT (UK)  »
So I am researching the PAGETT family from Birmingham.

Parents WILLIAM PAGETT 1833 married KEZIA TOWNSEND 1834 in Birmingham in 1853.

They go on to have children JAMES, FANNY, FREDRICK, WALBERT, HENRY and THOMAS.

FANNY marries GEORGE TWAMLEY and has children NELLIE, KATE, MAUD/DULCIE and GEORGE.

FREDRICK marries GRACE MIDDLETON and has children WALTER and FREDRICK.

THOMAS marries JESSIE SMITH and has children WILLIAM, HAROLD, JESSIE, FREDRICK, ARCHIBALD, VIOLET, THOMAS, GEORGE, ELSIE, ETHEL and DOROTHY.

Anyway... my question, on the 1891 census, KEZIA is located at 149 Bromsgrove St, Birmingham as a hairdresser. This is her address and occupation for many years previously. She has a 'daughter' on this census called NELLIE PAGETT, 17. I don't believe she ever had a daughter called Nellie, so I'm confused who this Nellie is.

The boarder on this census is WILLIAM WOOD who KEZIA names in her probate records a few years later. WILLIAM also marries NELLIE.

I have located a NELLIE PAGETT with the parents of JOSEPH PAGETT and SELINA DALE, but I have not discovered a JOSEPH or SELINA in the tree so far.

Can anyone help me see where Nellie fits in the tree?

Family History Beginners Board / Bennett Isherwood
« on: Saturday 23 January 21 14:57 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for any information as I seem to have hit a brick wall.

Bennett Ishwerwood born 1834 in Edgeworth, Lancs to parents John Isherwood (Abt 1811) and Jane ?? (Abt 1811). Siblings Squire (1830), Hannah (1832) and James (1836).

Bennett 'married' (cannot find any evidence of marriage as yet) Catherine Donovan born 1838 in Cork, Ireland to parents Timothy Donovan (Abt 1801) and Ellen McCarthy (Abt 1801). Sibling Thady/Timothy (1830).

Bennett (and brother Squire) were in prison in Lancashire in 1848, he then goes missing till 1863 where he reappears in Shoreditch, London at the birth of his first child.

Census records tell me Catherine Donovan was born in Brighton but i have found her birth record in Cork, she is in Brighton aged 3 however. She is in Brighton in 1851 then goes missing until 1863 obviously also in Shoreditch for the birth of her first child. They have 6 children, Ellen (1863), Bennett (1865), James (1866), John (1869), Catherine (1872) and Jane (1876).

I'd like to try and find some record of those missing years but keep hitting a blank. (I have researched the children quite extensively so do not need any information for them).

Both Bennett and Catherine stay in London until their deaths.

I'd also like to find more information about both sets of parents but keep hitting blanks here too.  ???

Many thanks

Kent / Anthony Thomas and wife Susanna
« on: Sunday 03 January 21 12:05 GMT (UK)  »
I need a fresh pair of eyes on a couple I am researching. I am looking for help to find any records for ANTHONY THOMAS and wife SUSANNA, possibly around the Dover area of Kent.

They had two daughters, Elizabeth born 1773 and Catherine born 1777. Their son, Anthony Lewis Thomas, was born 1779 in Dover, Kent. Anthony Lewis Thomas married Ann Maria East in 1801.

The parents names were found on the baptism records but I cannot find any other information about them apart from that Anthony Thomas died in 1790 in Dover. I cannot find any birth of marriage records for Anthony or Susanna. (A lot of other trees online show Susanna's surname as Tremaine, but I believe this to be a mistake from misreading the baptism documents).

Can anyone help me shed any light on this please? TIA.

Leicestershire / Mountsorrel Road - school?
« on: Tuesday 12 May 20 23:12 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone tell me what school was on Mountsorrel Road, Quorndon, Barrow Upon Soar in 1881 please?

I have a census record stating that Amelia Higham, 14, (born 1866 in Birmingham) is a pupil at a school during this time.

Would anyone know if this was a boarding school perhaps? It seems odd to me that Amelia would be here when her family were in Birmingham. Her father was a wealthy fishmonger in Birmingham, and doesn't pass away until 1891. Amelia's mother passed away in 1879.

Many thanks

Lancashire / Marriage help
« on: Monday 11 May 20 16:12 BST (UK)  »
I am looking to find a marriage between John Higham (born 1807 Manchester) and Elizabeth (born approx 1806 Staffordshire).

All the other trees on Ancestry suggest Elizabeth's surname is Heywood but I am yet to prove this. (I have found a birth record for an Elizabeth Heywood in the West Brom area in 1806 but don't know if this is relevant as yet).

The couple's first child, John Richardson Higham was born in 1828 in Manchester, which makes me think they may have married here. (Could be wrong!)

The rest of their children, Thomas Richardson Higham, Hannah Richardson Higham, Elizabeth Richardson Higham and William Richardson Higham  were all born in Birmingham between 1838 and 1844.

I believe Elizabeth dies in Birmingham in 1853. (John marries again in Birmingham in 1859 to Amelia Hunt).

I cannot seem to locate a marriage record for John and Elizabeth - can anyone help at all?

Thanks

Warwickshire / Could anyone help piece these two families together...
« on: Thursday 07 May 20 22:25 BST (UK)  »
Family 1 from the Studley, Worcestershire area:
Edwin Waring born 1844, wife Ellen Aubrey born 1847 with children Lilian, Charles, Bernard, Francis, Harold Edwin, Ellen, Jessie, Albert, Ethel, Victor, Florence, Harold Leslie and Arthur.

Family 2 from the Maypole/Kings Norton, South Birmingham area:
Walter Waring born 1856, married Lucy Ann Baxter born 1851 with children Frank, Ernest, May, Lilian and Ellen.

Now.. aside from the fact that both families live less than half an hour from each other, there are a couple of names that stick out to me in both families. Obviously the Waring surname being the first. The second being Leslie and the third being Aubrey.

Ellen, daughter of Walter Waring, called one of her sons Leslie, and one with the middle name Aubrey. It seems a real coincidence  to me, especially as this is not a common name at all.

I may be putting 2 and 2 to make 6, but I just feel they're somehow related. I just cannot find out how! (Edwin and Walter are not brothers).

Can anyone help?

The Common Room / Possible illegitimate child question
« on: Wednesday 06 May 20 23:13 BST (UK)  »
Is it reasonable to think that if someone aged 15 is christened (it says adult next to their baptism record), when nobody else in their family has been baptised, that this could be for a 'reason' such as having a baby illegitimately?

I'm asking because my ancestor, so I was led to believe, was one of many children (14 in total), however, on the 1911 census record it says the parents had 13 children, not 14. I thought this could have just been a clerical error but looking further into things my ancestor is not located on ANY census record. Not one. In fact, I find her birth record (haven't got her certificate yet) then she completely disappears until she marries.

I also find it odd that she has an older sister with the same name (although the sister does use the shortened version). I know this can happen when a sibling dies, but she doesn't die, she is very much alive and well into old age. As is my ancestor.

So... my theory... the sister is actually my ancestor's mother (aged 15) but my ancestor is brought up by her grandparents - and they just didn't mark her down on any census record.

The sister is baptised 10 days before my ancestor's birth date.
