Somerset / Help with origins of Samuel WEBBER bc 1796 Curry Rivell
« on: Wednesday 06 June 18 07:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Seriously stuck with my ggggf Samuel Webber.

In 1841 Samuel with wife "Mary" , son Samuel and daughter "Mary are living in Yeoman's Row Brompton Kensington. He is shown as 45 born  occ gardener. She is 40 - Samuel jn 10 "Mary" 5 all shown as "born in county". Daughter Elizabeth 17 is working as a servant in Brompton Crescent nearby.

In 1851 the family are living in Smith Street Chelsea, He is 55 and is now born in Curry Rivell Somerset, wife "Maria" 50 born Dorsetshire, daughter "Maria" 16 b Kensington. Elizabeth is married to Edward Pearson and living in Rotherhithe.

In 1861 Samuel and Mariann (her actual name) are not to be found- I have checked the microfilm and there are huge sections of Chelsea missing and unfortunately the couple must be in one of the missing pieces. However daughter Marian and her husband William Wildy are present. Elizabeth is now in Australia and is out of the picture.

In 1871 Samuel now widowed is living with Marian and William Wildy- his age has gained four years and place of birth is given as Kensington. He died at the Chelsea workhouse infirmary in 1874 age given matches the 1871 but not the earlier census. He appears in admissions entries for the workhouse in 1872.

My problem is that I am entirely unable to find a baptism for him in Curry Rivell. Some years ago I did find another Webber in Middlesex (James  from memory ) who also gave his PoB as Curry Rivell but does not appear in the baptisms for the one family that were living there at that time (William and Hannah).

I have found a number of baptisms in Somerset for Samuel's at around about the right time but not in Curry Rivell- the handwriting in the 1851 census is quite clear. As he was living with his son in law in 1871 I am sure that the details given then are incorrect as opposed to his consistency with his age in earlier census, I have only the one reference to PoB as Curry Rivell but I have no reason to disbelieve Samuel's entry in 1851.

Can anyone suggest somewhere near Curry Rivell that might be a likely place to look for a baptism? Non conformist chapels? villages close by- I have looked on google maps at the nearby villages but haven;t found Samuels bp there and feel it needs a local outlook.

I also don't have a marriage for him to Marian. She was from Dorset so I'm guessing a marriage in the Somerset/Dorset area rather than in London. Their first known child was my gggm Elizabeth born in 1825 (apparently in Brompton, Middlesex- I have not been able to confirm this with a baptism record) . The couple baptised a George Samuel in 1827, son Samuel junior seems to have a different birth date in every census that I have found him in- he is extremely difficult to find - he was in Fulham in 1851 and in Hospital in Fulham in 1901- he died in 1902- luckily he gave his full address of place of birth (Yeomans Row Brompton) in the 1901 census allowing me to track the family in 1841 (this was in pre online index days!)

Samuel senior was a "gardener" (non domestic) and through to the 1840's Yeoman's row was surrounded by orchards and market gardens- a suitable place for someone from agricultural Somerset to find work.

Any suggestions gladly welcomed- I have copies of the relevant seeming baptisms from findmypast- but are there any others not online there that someone knows about?

Thanks
Jane

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Sarah BAYLEY bc 1830 Madeley area bap look up
« on: Wednesday 06 June 18 03:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
After some really quick and much appreciated help on tracking down the mother of my ggf Richard Simmonds- I am now on the look out for his mother Sarah BAYLEY.

In 1864 she married Richard Simmonds (sen) giving father's name a William BAYLEY occupation labourer.
I can find a listing for William b1812- 1816, head, Mary wife and dau Sarah b c 1831 in Shrewsbury in 1841 but nothing for 1851.
Findmypast has listings for christening to Sarah A Bayley in 1831 Dawley Magna- but I suspect this is the daughter of Thomas who also appears in 1841 but there is also a listing for 1830 non conformist bap for a Sarah Bayley Dawley Magna.
Is anyone able to check these out for me?
I'm hoping William and Mary had other children to help me track them down but at the moment they just disappear into the ether in 1851.
Sarah was living with Richard Simmonds as his wife in 1861 and they had their first child in 1854 in Shrewsbury- they married in 1864! Details already supplied.

If Sarah was non conformist it might explian the late marriage
Thanks
Jane

Shropshire Completed Look up Requests / completed SIMMONDS/BAYLEY marriage 1864
« on: Tuesday 05 June 18 22:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Is anyone able to look up the about shropshire (?shrewsbury) marriage.
I have found it in various lists of civil registrations but what I am after is the actual church record- preferably showing Sarah Bayley's fathers name as well as Richards father.
Richard was my gggrandfather. He and a Sarah had five children - the first (my ggf) Richard b 1854. I have not been able to find a marriage for Richard SIMMONDS the elder to anyone before the birth of the first child. They appear in the 1861 census as Richard and Sarah SIMMONDS along with 6 year old Richard and 2 year old John. There were a couple of daughters born subsequently. And Sarah SIMMONDS age and PoB (madely) do not change from 1861 in the subsequent census (through to 1881)
In 1864 a Richard SIMMONDS married a Sarah BAYLEY. I do not know if this was a second marriage for Richard or if they really did leave marrying until AFTER all the children were born!
Another family member has had some research done which shows Sarah BAYLEY as the mother of Richard Simmonds junior but I haven't been able to confirm this. Richard was a very popular name amongst the Simmonds families and it could be a completely unrelated Richard who married sarah Bayley (which doesn;t help me find the real Sarah of course :-) )
Richard seniors parents are believed to be Richard (but of course!) (ex army) and Ann.

Any assistance gratefully received!

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Shelton Asylum records at SRO
« on: Tuesday 05 June 18 22:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Is anyone visiting the Shropshire Archives Office and able to do some staff record looks ups on the Shelton Asylum for me.
The records I am after are for my Great grandfather who would have started working there some time between 1871 and 1881. His name was Richard SIMMONDS and I am particularly interested in when he started as well as any other details available. He had retired by 1911. he started as an "attendant on the insane" and finished as Superindentant.
I know that they ask for prior notice for these requests but as he is over 100 years ago access should be permitted.
I am also interested in any records for his children working there- most of them (boys and girls) went on to work as nurses at some stage of their lives. The oldest Margaret Kate was born in 1882 and was working as a nurse at Shelton in 1911 (she was elsewhere in 1901). Other children who may have worked there were Fanny Mabel, gertrude May, Winifred Mary, Mildred Sarah and Dorothy Alma, less likely were Henry Burton (oldest son b 1883), Richard Gordon, John Knight and Joseph William Gilbert (youngest child b 1900).

Any information gladly received- do the archives allow photography of records? I realise that the asylum records are sensitive but this is about staff not patients.

Many thanks

Jane
