Armed Forces / RN Service record 1909 - 1945 Britannia 2?
« on: Friday 03 May 19 15:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Looking for a bit of help on my great uncle's service record.
Trying to read work out ships, but also what happened.
He lied about his age - made himself 18 instead of 16.
However it record runs from 1909 to 1932 which made him 41 (39 really) and I know he fought in WW1.
On the second page it looks like he was pensioned off?
Then he returns in September 1939 to Drake 2 (naval base) and then to Britannia 2 from 40 until April 1945 where he died in the RN Dartmouth. Is Britannia 2 part of the naval college? Would he have gone back to teach?

Any thoughts would be great.

World War Two / London Gazette - Mention in Despatches
« on: Friday 17 August 18 11:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone has had success with searching on the London Gazette website?

My grandad Cyril Edward Bush was awarded the oak leak - mention in despatches in 1941 and I'm struggling to find anything.

It was for helping during the bombing at Devonport docks on the night of 21 April 1941.

Any search tips would be greatly received.

World War One / Searching for records

Hi all,

Is there a way to search to see if a relative was in the war? Story goes my Great-Grandad was in WW1, in the Somme gassed and then became a POW and later released. Have a small account.
It was meant to serve for 6th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry, but I would love to ensure he was in the army and find is number so I could apply for his record.

Thanks in advance

World War Two / WW2 Royal Navy records decipher
« on: Saturday 04 August 18 17:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
Wondered if someone could help. I have my Grandfather's Royal Navy record and struggling to work out what some of the things say - or mean.
I know he was stationed at Devonport "Drake 2" while he was a cook and later a stoker on the Berwick.
After the war he joined the TA and served during the Korean war.

Most of the ship's serving are bases rather than ships though - is there a way to work out what actual ships he served on?

Thanks in advance
