Cheshire / Looking for a Grave: Goulding
« on: Thursday 08 February 24 15:48 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find the grave of my grandparents who lived in Over, Winsford. Maggie Goulding (Ikin) died in 1984, aged 82, born 11th May 1902. George Goulding died Oct-Dec 1966, aged 65 born Jul-Sep 1901. I believe they will be buried together. St. Chadís, Over seemed the logical place, but I have contacted the church and they are not there. I also looked on Find a Grave and Billion Graves with nothing offered.
Is there a way of finding out where they were buried/cremated?

Carmarthenshire / Jonah and Margaret Howell
« on: Saturday 30 December 23 16:55 GMT (UK)  »
Wanting to fill out my family tree, I am interested in following Jonah and Margaret Howell. They are my paternal great-great grandparents, with their daughter Margaret marrying Thomas Williams in 1855. In a very small area, there are two called Jonah Howell and both married a Margaret. The one I am interested in married Margaret Powell, and the other married Margaret Lewis.

Christening: Margaret Howell . Female (great-great grandmother)
Birth: 19 Jun 1834 . Christ: 2 Jul 1834
Parents: Jonah Howell . Margaret Powell
Philadelphia Independent, Laugharne, Carmarthenshire

Marriage: Parish Register St Sadwrn Llansadwrnen Carmarthenshire
10 Jan 1818
Jonah Howell (Eglwys Cymyn) Batchelor . Labourer . Signed X
Margaret Powell . Spinster . Signed X
Witnesses James Welsh . Thomas Meriman  . ? Mess?

1841 Census: Hill Mountain . Llansadurnen, Carmarthenshire
Mary Howell . 13 . Carmarthenshire
David Howell . 11 . Carmarthenshire
John Howell . 8 . Carmarthenshire
Margret Howell . 7 . Carmarthenshire
Thomas Howell . 5 . Carmarthenshire
Elizabeth Thomas . 10 . Carmarthenshire
Mary John . 8
John Sare . 1
HO107 . Piece/Folio 1382/4

I have information about Mary John and John Sear.

1851 Census: Gosport St . Laugharne
Jonah Howell . 60 . Head . Labourer
Margaret Howell . 59 . Wife . Gathers Cockles
Margaret Howell . Daughter . 14 . Laugharne
John Sarn . 12 . Nursed Child
Thomas Morgans . 4 . Grandson

1861 Census for Laugharne/Llansadurnen was destroyed.

There are two deaths that add to the confusion:
Burial: Jonah Howell . Llansadurnen, Carmarthenshire
Birth: 1780 - October 1863
Death: Jonah Howell . 80 (1802). Line Number 229
Jan-Mar 1882 . Carmarthen . Volume 11A . Page 543
In finding the burial for the older Jonah Howell in Llansadurnen, I now wonder if they could be father and son? There is around 20 years between. I looked around the graveyard but could not find his stone, though large areas have been allowed to run wild in the name of conservation.
Then I find the 1881 census record. It is after the 1782 Jonah has died. The births fit the 1802 Jonah, but not the profession. Could he have taken over his fatherís business? Is there another Jonah Howell?
1881 Census: Laugharne (Civil Parish), Carmarthenshire
Jonah Howells . 80 (1801) . Married . (Sailor/Pauper) . Bankyfelin, Carmarthenshire
Margt Howells . 83 (1798) . Married . Llanybri, Carmarthenshire
RG11 . Piece/Folio 5395/72 . Page 11

If anyone can offer some rationale to my search and confusion it will be much appreciated.

London and Middlesex / Betty May Ashford nee Williams
« on: Tuesday 12 December 23 15:20 GMT (UK)  »
On the 1939 Register one redacted entry was opened earlier in the year.
B M Williams Amended
The register also noted she married Frederick W Ashford.
Apr-Jun 1949 . Woolwich . Volume 5d . Page 2147
He died 21 December 1966
Death: Frederick W Ashford . 48 . b.1918
Oct-Dec 1966 . Woolwich . Volume 5e . Page 942
Probate: London 30 March 1967 to B M Ashford widow. At that time, they were living at 5 Ladysmith Road, Eltham, London. Amended

I cannot find a death or marriage. Even though the 100 year rule has passed, she may still be alive. There are possible children and a marriage, but nothing for certain. I am trying to make sense of what happened next. Where were they living 1949 to 1966? Possible children; 1947 Bromley and before marriage, 1953 Dartford, 1957 and 1960 Maidenhead, 1963 Wood Green.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Y-DNA the results.
« on: Tuesday 12 December 23 00:10 GMT (UK)  »
Those I am looking for are my g-g-grandfather and g-g-g-grandfather and from my direct paternal lineage. I already know their names are Thomas Williams and John Williams. I would like to know my Haplogroup. Will I only receive those who share my Haplogroup and/or the name Williams?
If I take a Y-DNA test, what will I receive?

Occupation Interests / Registered Hawker

I have come across Registered Hawkers.
Is there an actual register(s) for Hawkers?
If so, can it be viewed?

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Y-DNA is it worth trying?
« on: Monday 31 July 23 13:22 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for my paternal great-great-grandfather.
His son Thomas was born in Newcastle Emlyn (Cardigan side) around 1836.
The wedding certificate gave his father as John Williams a Labourer.
As he is my direct paternal line, would a Y-DNA test clarify anything?
I had a DNA test by LivingDNA. It was Autosomal and did not offer any close links, though uploaded to GedMatch I had a few results paternal and maternal.
Not happy with LivingDNA I deleted my results.
When the Autosomal offered so little, is there any point trying Y-DNA?
I am the last male on this line, with no one else who could take a DNA test.

Census and Resource Discussion / 1939 Register Carmarthen
« on: Sunday 04 June 23 12:45 BST (UK)  »
On the 1939 Register for 18 Blue Street, Carmarthen there is a Ďwí written above the birth year and a backward ĎRí written before S for Single. The sheet is XDCH Carmarthen 599-3 and looks to be the same ink as when it was written. The entry is Williams Agnes M, who married a Dunbar, b. 09 Jan 1925 and at School. I know the marriage information noted in the left column. Do these additions mean anything?

Stirlingshire / James K Buchan of Falkirk
« on: Saturday 20 May 23 13:24 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace family of James Kennedy Buchan. I have details of his birth 05 Jun 1907 . Falkirk . 479/573, but that was some time ago and I cannot remember where it was found. At his wedding in Carmarthen, Wales, his father was also James Kennedy Buchan a Butcher. Is it possible to find his siblings from census records as I have drawn a blank? There are a few called Buchan in South Wales, but at present I cannot link them.

Carmarthenshire / Evans Thomas and Simpson
« on: Saturday 18 March 23 13:26 GMT (UK)  »
I and trying to trace two Thomas sisters. Both married Healy brothers who are linked to my family, and I have traced them. I am looking to see if the Thomas family are somehow related and cannot to make sense of some names.

Mary Kezia Thomas . mmn Evans . Apr-Jun 1909 . Carmarthen . Volume 11a . Page 1419
Lydia Jane Thomas . mmn Evans . Jan-Mar 1912 . Carmarthen . Volume 11a . Page 2774.
The marriage certificate gave their fatherís name as Jenkin Thomas.
They are on the 1911 Census in St Peter Carmarthen.
William Mark Barnett . Head . M . 30 . St Peter, Carmarthenshire . Boatman
Rachel Gladys Barnett . Wife . F . 23 . Llynwda, Carmarthenshire
Mary Ann Barnett . Daughter . F . 3 . St Peter, Carmarthenshire
Jenkin Thomas . Lodger . M . 36 . Aberdare, Glamorganshire . Coal Miner
Diana Ann Thomas . Wife . F . 27 . Corio, Carmarthenshire
Thomas Henry Thomas . Son . M . 4 . Pontardawe, Glamorganshire
Mary Kenziah Thomas . Daughter . F . 2 . St Peter, Carmarthenshire
RG14 . Piece/Folio: 237 . Schedule Type: 118

Rachel Gladys and Diana Ann were Evans sisters.
1901 Census: Richmond Terrace . St Peter Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire
Thomas Simpson . Head . M . 37 . Hanley, Staffordshire . House Painter
Mary Simpson . Wife . F . 38 . Caio, Carmarthenshire
Diana Evans . Daughter . F . 18 . Llanwrda, Carmarthenshire
Rachel G Evans . Daughter . F . 13 . Llanwrda, Carmarthenshire
D T Simpson . Son . M . 7 . Llandilo, Carmarthenshire
R Elsie Simpson . Daughter . F . 4 . Llandilo, Carmarthenshire
Piece/Folio: 81 . Schedule Type: 315

Confusion: Thomas Henry Thomas . mmn Simpson . Jul-Sep 1907 . Pontardawe . Volume 11a . Page 1037 . Did Jenkin Thomas father Thomas Henry with someone called Simpson or has Diana Ann given her step-fatherís name? The birth certificate may help, but it is not that important and I am only asking if anyone can find further information online.

Confusion: I found a marriage 6 months before Thomas Henry was born: Jenkin Thomas . Diana Ann Grenfell . Oct-Dec 1906 . Carmarthen . Volume 11a . Page 2074. It should be Diana Ann Evans. It seems an unlikely transcription error. Should the marriage certificate clearly show her name as Grenfell, ordering it will not help. I cannot find a marriage to a Grenfell. Having checked the GRO with variables, there is no one born Diana Ann Grenfell, or Diana Ann Evans mmn Grenfell. It might be coincidence and the wrong marriage. Am I missing something?

I cannot find a marriage for Thomas Simpson and Mary Evans.
There is no registration for the two Simpson children.
In 1891, the Simpson family are in Clase, Swansea, with a Thomas family lodging. From the mmn Simpson they were related. Unnamed Thomas, Sarah Ann Thomas and children Willie, James H and an unnamed female Thomas.

1891 Census: Workhouse . Victoria Crescent . Llandingat, Carmarthenshire
Mary Evans . Pauper . F . 32 . Carmarthenshire

Rachel Evans . Pauper . F . 4 . Carmarthenshire
Margaret Evans . Pauper . F . 53 . Carmarthenshire
