Hi, hoping someone's again able to come to my aid re: the attached birth cert. snippet featuring a placename that looks like Ballrelan. It isn't, of course, having checked variations in ScotlandsPlaces.
This one is a toughie but I'm confident someone out there will rise to the occasion. Thanks.
Cheers,
Col  :)

Hi & please see attached snippet.
Unable to read the place John Fraser came from & don't know why...
… William is named his "natural son" where all other births on the register page are named "lawful"
… John Fraser is recorded also as "alias miller", Fraser or Miller on the ScotlandsPeople record listing
Quite a mystery unless John Fraser was a boll o' meal Fraser who changed his Miller surname when joining Simon Fraser's clan? Don't know.
Anyway, will appreciate what help you experts out there can give me. I've been lucky so far with forum members solving some of the riddles coming my way when researching.
Cheers,
Col :)

Ross & Cromarty / Another Urquhart & Logie Wester placename mystery
« on: Tuesday 03 September 19 22:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi, am hoping for a solution to this one, too.
My ggggg grandparents had 2 children in the 1760s @ a pace recorded in the Old Parish Register births as Balnabine for their first child, Balnabin for their second.
I can't find anywhere that comes close to either spelling & would appreciate the aid of those placename sleuths who have risen to similar challenges thus far.
Cheers,
Col :)

Ross & Cromarty / Where is this place in Urquhart & Logie Wester or close by?
« on: Monday 02 September 19 06:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi, please see the snippet of my paternal ggggg grandparents' marriage @ Ferintosh in 1761. He seems to have hailed from Newtown & she from Culnagowr. I've found Newtown or Newton, but not Culnagowr (or is it Culnagown) - maybe I'm reading the handwriting wrongly.
Calling placename experts out there for help on this one, please.
Cheers,
Col

Hi, on my gggg grandfather's Old Parish Birth Record, see attachment, I think the locality Tynahinch appears for where their farm was situated. On an old map of Ross & Cromarty I saw Teanahinch - could this be the place?
I'd appreciate the help of someone in the know, thanks.
Cheers,
Col :)

Ross & Cromarty / Searching for early Frasers
« on: Thursday 29 August 19 22:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi, am researching my paternal gggg grandparents John Fraser & Christian Forbes who were contracted & married in the parish church of Urquhart & Logie Wester 3/4/1795. He was a farmer from Feanhinch which I guess was the farm name because their son William born 17/3/1796 was born in the hamlet of Ferintosh as reported on censuses from the mid 1800s wen he was an adult living in Fife Keith..
Am having difficulty going on from there. The Old Parish Records from ScotlandsPeople  don't give the direction afforded by the Statutory Records. I'd appreciate any pointers to enable me to track John & Christian's births etc, thanks.
Cheers,
Col  :)

Banffshire / How can I find out more about my paternal ggg grandparents from Keith?
« on: Wednesday 02 January 19 03:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi & Happy New Year.

My ggg grandparents were William Fraser, flour miller & Ann Sellar who married in Keith 1st Jan 1827. On their son's / my gg grandad's 1908 death cert they appear as parents along with William's occupation.

Am finding it hard to find anything beyond these details. Though I think I've found their births & parents, 1787 & 1789 respectively, is there anywhere to be searched in lieu of modern censuses & the like that'll provide more detail - where they lived, where he milled - to flesh out their lives more?

Any suggestions appreciated, thanks.

Cheers,
Col  :)

Aberdeenshire / When did Grandad emigrate to Australia?
« on: Sunday 16 December 18 19:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, hoping someone can help. My paternal grandad Charles Robert Fraser died before my birth. Haven't been able to find his emigration details though I remember asking about him as a child and my dad thought he may have come through Fremantle, West Australia, he didn't know when.

He was born in Garty, Kilmuir Easter in Ross-shire 1883. As an apprentice engine fitter he boarded in Aberdeen according to the 1901 census. On his Jan 1st 1949 death certificate his time in NSW was altered from 40 to 47 years. That led me to search for shipping records in 1901/02 (and other following years) with no success.

Thanks for any help forthcoming.

Merry Christmas,
Col  :)
