Bedfordshire Lookup Requests / Valentine Cardington
« on: Monday 13 April 20 07:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
I am back on the inhabitants of Cardington.  I have a William Valentine who was supposedly (according to the 1841 census) born in Bedfordshire between 1817 and 1821 (age 20) and living in Cotton End in 1841.  I can't trace a baptism in Bedfordshire.  His father, in the 1841 census, was Thomas Valentine who was born c 1771.  There are two marriages for Thomas in Cardington to Mary Goodship (1813) and Mary Whitamore (1807) but no Marys are on the census and  I can't find a death record for a Mary Valentine. However, Thomas and William are living with (what I presume is) Mary Whitamore's brother, Joseph and family, in 1841.
William moved to Haynes in 1842 and married Martha Neal.
So, I don't have any record of the births of William, Thomas or Mary Goodship.  I don't have a death record for either Mary Valentine.  I have a tentative birth for Mary Whitamore in Haynes, 1786, although she is said to be a resident of Cardington on her marriage record.
Thanks,
Sian :)

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Mary Scovell
« on: Friday 10 April 20 06:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am trying to find the parents of Mary Scovell.  On 19th May 1807, she married Joseph Child of Sheering in Essex and her residence was Marylebone, Westminster at that time, and she was over 21.  In 1827 her 5 boys (William 1812, Nathaniel 1813, James 1813, Joseph 1819, John 1821) were left orphaned.  All Josephs (the elder) siblings had died.
In the 1841 census, three of the boys are in Hampshire and married Scovells. William in Romsey married to Rachel Scovell (he migrated to Australia after the census), Nathaniel is in Swathling Pollack married to Caroline Scovell, and Joseph is also in Swathling Pollack and marries Sarah Scovell much later. So I am thinking that they moved to Hampshire after their parents died, where their closest relatives would be i.e. Mary's family.
There is also evidence of Child family members living in Hampshire but nothing concrete.  My mother also talked a lot about Joseph Child owning oyster beds in Hampshire and his uncle being a mayor.  As Joseph (the elder) was a landholder (freehold, as he appears in the 1810 poll book - Sheering) I presume the children would have legacies. I find this rather strange as he was a shoemaker (master cordwainer) so I think he must have had fingers in a lot of pies or some other means of income.  Also, I have 'bits' of info about the Scovells being merchants around Southampton and maybe the Childs in London
Witnesses of the marriage were William Robinson, who appears to be from Essex and be a Merchant.  Leonora Orella, I have nothing on.
So back to the main question  ;D Who were Mary's parents and where and when was she born?
Thanks in anticipation.  Stay safe everyone.

Bedfordshire Lookup Requests / Redman, Cardington Beds
« on: Thursday 09 April 20 08:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
I have a Samuel Redman born 1794 in Cardington, Bedfordshire.  He married a Mary but the marriage records for 1813 to 1837 don't seem to be anywhere to be found. Their first child is born circa 1816.  Anyone got any ideas where to look?  I need her maiden name to move forward.
Thanks,
Sian

Essex Lookup Requests / Joseph Child - oyster beds and orphaned children
« on: Thursday 14 November 19 03:48 GMT (UK)  »
Joseph Child born 1772 owned some oyster beds in Essex (family story) but I can't find any confirmation.  Are there any records of this sort of thing?  His children were also left orphaned after he died in 1822 and his wife (Mary Scovell) died in 1827.  His youngest child was born in 1821 (John).  Joseph must have been quite well off as he is in the Poll book in 1810 owning a freehold property in Sheering so I don't think the family would have ended up in the poor house after his death, but I would like to find out where the children went after Mary died.  Would there be any records saying where orphaned children went?  The children were William (1812), Nathaniel (1813), James (1817), Joseph (1819) and John (1821).  I can't find his Will or probate either.  It is possible that they ended up in Hampshire where Mary came from.  Any help gratefully received!

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Joseph Bradshaw - birth record for parents details
« on: Thursday 14 November 19 03:22 GMT (UK)  »
Joseph Bradshaw was born on June 24th 1773 in Kettering, according to his military record (1802-1823).  I have been unable to find any birth records for him.  He had a weavers apprenticeship in Corby in 1784, which does seem very young to be an apprentice but he is shown as a weaver on his military record.  After his time in the Militia, he ended up being a Publican in Kempston, Bedfordshire.  I would love to get his parents names so I can move forward (or backwards!)

I am unsure of his wife's name as there as several to choose from, but her first name is Ann.

Any help would be gratefully received  There are a lot of Bradshaw's in Northamptonshire!
