The Lighter Side / Double trouble?
« on: Saturday 10 September 22 15:23 BST (UK)  »
This is a new one for me.

In 1901 census the Thomas family living in Regent Street Gloucester is listed twice. On page 15 they are all listed in detail, then on page 18 exactly the same family but with slightly altered occupations. The families before and after on each page differ. I wonder if they were actually spread out over two different houses and different family members answered the enumerators without realising they were being double counted!

London and Middlesex / Charles Dennis 1844/5
« on: Thursday 08 September 22 14:37 BST (UK)  »
I am confused whilst looking for the birth of Charles Dennis, a cabinet maker living in Birmingham, who says in the 1911 census that he was born in Bloomsbury and is 66 (so 1844/5). Now I had thought that I had found his birth in Lambeth (Mmn Gray) which matched up with a family of cabinet makers. Father George even agrees with Charles marriage information in 1866. So I thought he was just confused and accepted a slight southern shift.

Great! Except for doing back recently I have FindMyPast and Freebmd throwing up an illegitimate birth in 3rd quarter 1844. But surely Bloomsbury ceased to be a registration area in 1839 so how could this be? The birth is not apparently on the GRO site under any name I can find. I don’t want to waste money asking GRO to look for a non existent registration so decided to ask the experts here if they can shed any light on this oddity. Is it likely to be an error on the part of the sites or of GRO?

I am looking for the parents of my 3xgreat grandmother Mary Powell. I am certain that she was the Mary Powell who was baptised in Newent on 13 Feb 1803, the daughter of Richard Powell and his wife Susan.
I have found two other children: Susannah, baptised 17 May 1799, daughter of Richard and Susanna and Esther, baptised 8 April 1804, daughter of Richard Powell and Susan. Both of these girls are married in London in the 1820s and 1830s.
However I can find no further trace of Richard or Susannah/Susan in Gloucestershire nor London.

Mary marries John Heaven in Cheltenham 24 March 1824 and in 1841 is with a James Powell and family in Awre with two of her children. In later census James states he was born in Newent in 1801. This matches with a baptism of James, son of James and Susannah Powell. I have been working on the hypothesis that the younger James might be Mary's cousin but am beginning to wonder if there is a possibility that they are siblings

James Powel marries Susannah Phillips 26 Feb 1797

Baptisms

Hannah (Hannah Powell, base born daughter of Susannah Philips baptised 31 May 1795),
Ann 31 Dec 1797 (possibly Hannah “rebaptised” now her parents are married)
Sarah 25 September 1805,
Richard 17 April 1808
Caroline 22 Nov 1812.

It is noticeable that my three girls fall into the gap between Ann and Sarah

Can anyone help me to make a decision?

England / Thomas Heaven b. 1838 Tetbury
« on: Saturday 30 October 21 10:09 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for Thomas Heaven or Heavens b 1838 Tetbury Gloucestershire, in particular after 1871.
I am posting here as I do not know if he stays in London, moves back west to Glous. or Plymouth.

I have found him in London in the Holborn area in the 1861 and 1871 census as a barometer maker. Place of birth and age seem okay and since his elder sister Charlotte married Edward Cetti, a Barometer maker, it would be possible that he learnt the trade via a family connection.

He marries Ann Bath Shaw in London in 1858 and has three daughters in the 1871 census; Elizabeth Harriet 1861, Charlotte Isabella 1863 and Rosina Mary Ann 1865. Thanks to Minihaha and wivenhoe on the New Zealand board I have established that Annie Bath and the 3 girls were passengers on "Himalaya"  arr. Canterbury 24 Jul 1875 but with the surname Edwards. They seem to be on their way to join James Thomas Edwards in Timaru, Canterbury, New Zealand. There was a younger child, Annie Edwards 2, which corresponds with a 1873 GRO birth of Annie Bath Edwards in Plymouth with mmn Shaw. The girls often use the name Heaven Edwards in documents.

However I can find no sign of Thomas following 1871. I can find no death nor any evidence of Annie's remarriage to J T Edwards but cannot believe that he is actually Thomas using another name.

Many searches throw up a farmer who lives in Cricklade St Sampson, Wiltshire but I am convinced that this is his cousin, Thomas Moss Heaven.

Can anyone help me discover what happened to Thomas?

New Zealand Completed Requests / Wellington death of Ann Bath Edwards
« on: Thursday 28 October 21 13:00 BST (UK)  »
Ann Bath Edwards dies in New Zealand in Wellington.
I am sorry but I don't know the year as this has appeared as a hint on Ancestry and I don't have a worldwide subscription.

Can anyone check if this could be Ann Bath Shaw born in Kent about 1834 (although she says 1837 in some documents) and married to Thomas Heaven(s) in 1858 in London.

The Common Room / What did a Plumper do?
« on: Friday 01 October 21 10:45 BST (UK)  »
Looking through some Edinburgh baptisms for 1699 I see one father’s occupation being described as a Plumper. Has anyone any knowledge of what this might be? In particular is it related to a goldsmith or jeweller?

Canada Lookup Request / Barritt/Barrett Girls - sent by Middlemore Homes
« on: Wednesday 24 February 21 18:34 GMT (UK)  »
I am wondering if anyone can help me find out what happened to these 2 sisters.

In 1893 two sisters Mary Ann (b. abt 1883) and Alice (1885) were sent to Canada by the Middleton Homes on the Siberian. Both were sent to Scotsburn, Pictou Co., Nova Scotia. Mary Ann was placed with Adam R. MURRAY and I think was still there in October 1900 if I have read the BHC information correctly. However I cannot find her in the 1901 census.
Her younger sister was sent to George Stewart and is still there in 1901 but not by 1911.

I would love to know what happened to the two girls and if they managed to make a life for themselves.

The Common Room / Revising Barrister’s Court 1843
« on: Saturday 17 October 20 16:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi, can anyone tell me about the decisions made by a Revising Barrister’s Court. I know that it concerns the voters list for the area but I do not know what the actual decisions mean.
Claims  -  either allowed or struck out.
Objections  - either struck out or retained.

Is it a claim to be added to the list? Why would somebody object to be on the list?

I would love to know what was involved for one relative who had his claim allowed.

The Common Room / Why Golden?
« on: Sunday 12 January 20 11:06 GMT (UK)  »
Researching my great-grandmother Kate Frances Warner 1860-1924 I found that of her 10 siblings, 5 were given the name Golden either as a first or middle name. Since their mother's maiden name is Knight I am trying to work out why this was done? I haven’t found any possible Golden grandparents although I am still looking in to this. Has anyone any other ideas?
