Family History Beginners Board / Can anyone help

Hi I have only been researching my family tree for a couple of months and i am already completely fascinated by what I am finding out. At the moment I am struggling to find any info on a relative of mine, I seem to be going round and round in circles.
The details of the relative I am trying to find are as follows:
James Kirkpatrick born in Scotland in or around 1770.
Married Elizabeth Hog or Hogg.
Had a son called William Kirkpatrick born 1797.
If anyone can help me with this search, any relevant details appreciated.
