Family History Beginners Board / Birth record help
« on: Sunday 26 November 23 09:21 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning. I am looking to find a birth record of a child born to Susannah Cooper sometime late in 1807 or in early 1808 in or around Shoreditch. So far I am drawing a blank. Poor union record states that she was a pregnant single woman at the time.

Hi, I am looking for some help with interpreting a record, or any expertise in this area.

As the title suggests, this is a register for children under 14, but the person that I am looking at appears to be over 16 in four different records at this institution. It also appears as if he is the only one in this age bracket. Would it be common for this to happen?

I am looking for a potential ancestor by this same name, but I think that if he is 16, he would be too old to be who I am looking for. Help appreciated.

I am trying to track down records for a Harry Bedford born in Celbridge in 1882. I believe that he was my Grandmother's biological father. She was born in 1921 to Katherine Emily Bayliss (Transcription mistakenly says Kathleen) in Heywood Lancashire and she was given away as a child to be raised by a nice family, but was never formally adopted. No father named on the birth certificate. My main problem is either placing Harry in the North West of England or Katherine in Ireland. I can't even find an obvious death record for him either. I thought that the 1921 census might help me but can't see anything obvious?

Thank you.

Family History Beginners Board / 1841 Census Stepney
« on: Saturday 04 February 23 12:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I am trying to trace two individuals by the names of James Weaver (born 1815) and Jane Moses. On their marriage certificate from 1841, it lists them as living at 13 & 16 Thomas Street, Stepney respectively. I can't find wither of them on the census at that time at all. Does anyone know of any other clever way of searching?

Thanks!

Good morning. By way of trying to overcome my brick wall, I was considering buying the book Pre-1841 censuses and population listings in the British Isles.

I was wondering if anyone owned this book and if so, does it contain many London records? I am still searching for the records of two brick wall ancestors and wondered if this has helped anyone successfully?

Thanks!

Family History Beginners Board / Marriage age range - Opinion Please
« on: Monday 14 November 22 21:24 GMT (UK)  »
Good evening.

I am looking in to a Robert Weaver, born 1771 in Aldgate, Middlesex to William Weaver & Susannah Rand.

Of course this is a matter of opinion, but I had ruled him out as the Robert Weaver who is my ancestor got married in 1810 (albeit in the same area) and fathered a child (Henry) in 1826. I suppose if his wife (Susannah) was younger, it is possible but does 39 seem far too old to be married in those days? I can't find a previous marriage and my Robert is listed as a bachelor on the marriage record that I have seen. I have found a will from William Weaver, which I think says that Robert would receive an allowance until he married, but I can barely read it, so that could be incorrect.

Just interested in thoughts on this one really.

Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Eliphalet Hill -Unusual name
« on: Wednesday 12 October 22 21:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi again, apologies to anyone who spotted my thread yesterday relating to this man.

Eliphalet Hill, who was baptised in 1805 was my 4 x G.Grandfather and father to my 3 X G.Grandmother Ann Hill, who was born in 1829 and later married Henry Weaver in 1859.

I was just wondering if anyone had come across this name Eliphalet in the UK, or elsewhere before?

It certainly wasn't common in London, or the wider UK at the time.

With the help of this site, I think I have found an accurate birth record for Eliphalet to John & Susannah in 1805 and he is on the 1841 census with Ann in Flower & Dean Street, Whitechapel.

I have done a bit of a search on the name and it appears that there are a few Eliphalet Hill's in Connecticut, USA from 1600's onwards, all the way to mid 1700's. Furthermore, it looks as if the Hill's branched out from Exeter in Devon to Connecticut at some point.

Do we think that this name is unusual enough to suggest a potential link? Possibly an impossible question to answer. Just throwing it out there for now :)

Family History Beginners Board / Hill family sanity check please - East End/London
« on: Tuesday 11 October 22 09:11 BST (UK)  »
Been working on this branch for a while now but keep going round in circles and could do with some fresh eyes.

My 3 x G.G grandmother was Ann Hill, who was born around 1829 in Whitechapel. On her marriage record in 1859 (to Henry Weaver), it is noted that she is 30 years of age and that her father was Eliphalet Hill. I have also found them in Flower & Dean Street on 1841 census with the mothers given name as Mary.

On the limited records that I can find for the father, his name is never spelled consistently, which makes it a pest to look for.

I am wondering if anyone else can find anything on Eliphalet or Mary? I am completely stuck on them and can't get any further back really. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

As a side note, I have many DNA matches that seem to suggest that Mary's family may have been American (to the name Mary Hill Bowling - Then back to the names Jacobs & Crawford), but this is completely anecdotal and not proven.

Family History Beginners Board / Mary Steed Weaver
« on: Wednesday 27 April 22 12:35 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for some more information on a Mary Steed Weaver. She married a Stephen Blyther in Rochester, Kent in 1801 and had a sister called Margaret who died in 1835. I am connected through DNA to 4 of her descendants and as I have had no real luck overcoming my Weaver brick wall I thought that she was worth looking in to in the absence of any other leads. I can't locate any birth record but someone else may have more luck?
