Kirkcudbrightshire / Cumstoun House, Twynholm
« on: Saturday 01 January 22 14:14 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find information about Cumstoun House near Tywnholm, particularly about its use and ownership around 1920 - 1930.  I have searched but can only find info about the architectural significance, but nothing about who actually lived there.    I would be very grateful if someone could point me towards a source for any information.

Thank you.

World War Two / Help deciphering WW2 service file
« on: Thursday 22 July 21 11:19 BST (UK)  »
I obtained my fathers WW2 file and we are trying to flesh out the information and get some idea of where and what he was involved in during his service.  However, we are struggling to understand some of the annotations and would be grateful for any assistance offered.

He was a Sapper in the Royal Engineers and served from 1940 to 1946 and the file shows him to be in Egypt, Cyprus, Crete and Greece during his service.  I have set out some of the abbreviations here, but there are many more.  If necessary can post an image of some of the file extract so that readers can see the actual annotation and it's context.

Initial posting on enlistment - "D" Coy No. 10 TB RTC RE
Transferred "T" Coy 9 TB
Transferred P/Q wing 10 T.B.R.T.C.
Embarked for M.E.  11/1/1941
M.C Cyprus 24/5/41

He was unskilled and his army "trade" is shown as Pri Checker D.II and Sec PNR RE CIII.  There is also a Proficiency Form which shows he passed the Class III test for the trade of Pioneer RE Gp E.

As I say, I can post the images if needed, but would be grateful for any info.

Thank you
Andrew

Lanarkshire / Trying to decipher a 1855 Birth record
« on: Wednesday 14 October 20 17:34 BST (UK)  »
This is an image of part of an 1855 birth.   Specifically it's the column with the parents marriage date and place and then the details of other children from the marriage.  I think I can get some of it, but would appreciate if anyone can pick out anything more.

So far I think the marriage is 1838, Co Donegal.
The children details ...
3 boys and ? girls living
? boys and 1 girl deceased

As far as I can ascertain, there may have been 8 children living or dead at this time.

Armed Forces / Displaying medals
« on: Thursday 01 October 20 14:06 BST (UK)  »
I am looking at getting my fathers WW2 medals mounted in a frame with his photo.  I think I have sorted out the order, alignment and having the sovereigns head facing out.  For the name plate, is there a proper sequence for persons details or is it just personal choice ?

A letter for the MOD has it shown as Serial No, Rank, Name, Regiment,  but the medal box labels have it as Rank, Name, Serial no.

Lanarkshire / Trying to identify address
« on: Tuesday 28 April 20 10:59 BST (UK)  »
I have a death registration for someone who dies in Barnhill Poorhouse, Garngadhill but I cannot discern what their usual address was from the record.   It looks like Shiplea Pass ???   Any ideas ?

Also, where would the burial likely be for a death in that area.  It would be a non catholic burial.

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Cause of Death
« on: Monday 15 April 19 10:55 BST (UK)  »
The attached is from a Cornish death certificate.   Does "Child led / Not Certified"   mean she died in childbirth and the child did not survive either ?   Sorry for what mean seem a basic question, but just trying to make sure I interpret things correctly.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with some words on Marriage Record
« on: Saturday 13 April 19 16:32 BST (UK)  »
The attached snip is from a Scottish marriage registration in 1909.  It is the column for the brides father and mothers details.    I read it as ".... Amelia Carkeet formerly ????? ?????? afterwards married to Richard Stratton, Coalminer. Dec"      The ???? words look like "powerloom weaver" which would make sense, but why is her occupation appearing at all ?    It's usually only the males occupation, and the womans maiden surname.

Armed Forces / Understanding service records
« on: Saturday 30 March 19 10:59 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently obtained my grandfathers army service record which covers WW1 and thru the 20's to 1932.   From 1923 onwards he appears to have been in the Territorial Army initially with the 9th HLI.    However there is an entry where he is "discharged" on one day, and immediately re-enlisted the following day in the Royal Engineers.   There is a reference which looks to read ".....discharged under A.O. 285 / 1924 para 27 (b)"    He then serves as a reserve from 1924 to 1932.     Can anyone tell me what the discharge reference means ?   Is this just an internal transfer ?

Also, his HLI service in 1923/24 is on a form title "Territorial Army", whereas the one from 1924 is titled "Army Reserve - Supplementary Reservists (Militiamen)" .   What's the significance of that, if any ?

Thanks

World War One / Searching for WW1 Medal Record
« on: Sunday 10 February 19 14:25 GMT (UK)  »
Sadly I started my family history research when it was too late, and most of the previous generation had passed.   I have tried many times to find any service records for my grandfather without success, so I assume his records were lost.   He served in 9th Bn HLI -  I know this from the birth certificates of his two daughters, both of which he registered and signed.   Knowing his date of marriage, and the birth and dates above I searched for a Medal Index card and by a process of illimitation have identified what I think is his service number as 5791 Enlisted 18/5/1915.

The medal index card I found on Ancestry shows enlistment in 1915 and discharge 1919 and with annotations in the right column, but nothing about medals.  I have also searched the Ancestry images of the medal roll for both the War medal and Star but cannot find him.

Would there be any reason for him not getting these medals ?
