How to Use RootsChat (Please don't post requests here) / Contacting another member
« on: Saturday 10 January 15 06:19 GMT (UK)  »
My son-in-law has asked me if I can trace his ancestors from the time of his arrival in Tasmania in 1834 as a convict.
I have found in the Surnames Index that  a member is interested in the same name both in Tasmania and England.
My son-in-law would like to make contact, but I can't find a way of contacting them. Can anyone enlighten me?

The Common Room / Place of Burial
« on: Tuesday 28 January 14 00:48 GMT (UK)  »
In 1903 an ancestor of mine was sent to Holloway Prison for two months without hard labour. Whilst serving her time there she died. At the time of her imprisonment she was living in Chelmsford, Essex. Would her body have been returned to Chelmsford or was  there a dedicated cemetery for the prison?

Nottinghamshire / Mary Waldegrave
« on: Thursday 28 May 09 07:35 BST (UK)  »
G'Day,
When looking through the Parish Register film for Hardingham in Norfolk I came across the burial of a Mary WALDEGRAVE from Newark upon Trent at  Hardingham on 15 September 1761.
Someone might have lost her!

Oxfordshire / Osney House
« on: Saturday 03 January 09 01:54 GMT (UK)  »
G'Day,
I was fortunate enough to find my father's sister in the 1911 Census that was available for a short time recently. She was born in Suffolk  and I have always assumed that  she and my father were sent from the Plomersgate Union to the same place - to Crowborough in Sussex. However, I have found her in Oxford but have been unable to find out anything about the place to which she was sent and wondered if anyone could help or point me in the right direction.
The address on the transcription was shown as  OSNEY HOUSE 8 ST THOMA'S HOME ST THOMA'S OXFORD( I'm not shouting, I have written it as received, including the punctuation!). The establishment was, I believe, a convent school.
Any help would be appreciated.

Australia Lookups completed / Mornington Peninsula, Victoria
« on: Monday 07 April 08 07:07 BST (UK)  »
G'Day,

My wife's elderly aunt died recently and among her possessions was a little book called "The Early History of the Mornington Peninsula". It makes no claims to be an in-depth history but does contain quite a number of names of early settlers in that region, including a list of the names of the first residents of Schnapper Point (now Mornington).
I am happy to look for any names anyone might be interested in.

Armed Forces / The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
« on: Saturday 15 July 06 03:23 BST (UK)  »
G'Day,
My father, Raymond  SOUTH, was born in Suffolk but joined the Cameronians in 1919/20 and served until 1932/33. He spent most of his time in India and what is now Iraq. In 1941 he again enlisted, this time in the Military Police and again served in India.
That is really the extent of what I  know about his army service  and wonder how I can find out more. It would seem that at some time between his death and my mother's death his discharge papers, medals and a few letters were destroyed. Whilst the letters are irreplaceable is there any way I can get copies of his discharge papers and find out what medals he was entitled to?

Essex / SOUTH family in Essex
« on: Friday 07 April 06 00:58 BST (UK)  »
G'Day,
Is anyone researching the SOUTH family in Essex, particularly around the Maldon area?
The person I am interested in is  Ethel Elizabeth SOUTH. All I know about her is that she was in or near  Friston, Suffolk, in 1903 and 1904 when her two children, Raymond and Queenie were born. Other than that - nothing, absolutely nothing. No date or place of birth, no relations. no nothing.
The reason I am interested in the Essex area mentioned above is probably based on faulty deductions but my brother had made a start on the family history prior to his death and had the names of people my mother thought were related to Ethel and I finally found a family of SOUTHs in Maldon that had a couple of those names plus an Ethel. Another family story had the name COOPER  mentioned and I found a Cooper SOUTH and those SOUTHs traced back to Essex. Tenuous to say the least but worth a try, I thought, in the absence of any other leads.
