Family History Beginners Board / Conviction records? - England
« on: Tuesday 13 April 21 11:14 BST (UK)  »

I have recently found the cremation record for my 1st cousin, once removed,  Joseph Keating, which shows he died in Walton Prison, Liverpool, 30th May 1983, aged 43.  I've found a public record which would suggest he took his own life.

How can I find out what he was in prison for?  I know newspaper archives are the obvious place to start but I don't have a subscription to any of these sites. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Family History Beginners Board / Take 2 - can someone check my workings please?

When I started building my tree 3-4 years ago, I made the rookie mistake of accepting the hints on Ancestry without properly checking.  Fast forward to today and I'm much wiser but my confidence has been knocked after I discovered I have had a branch wrong for years and have spent a spent a small fortune on certificates for someone else's family!

So we have my Great Grandparents-

Andrew McNamara BIRTH 3 MAY 1864 32 Ford Street Liverpool, Lancashire, , England
DEATH 27 NOV 1923 Royal Southern Hospital Liverpool, Lancashire, England

Mary Jane Johnson BIRTH 15 AUG 1872 26 Gascoyne Street, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
DEATH 23RD JULY 1930 237 Arlington Street ,Liverpool, Lancashire

I had the totally wrong parents for Mary, I THINK I now have the right parents, Catherine Jones and Richard Johnson. The 1901 census has both Andrew & Mary, Catherine and Richard all living together at 6 Lancaster St. - All good right? As further verification, Mary has a sister Alice, who married John James Jockins and I am a DNA match to the ancestors of this couple.

So now we move to the next generation back on Mary's side - I have a wedding cert for Richard and Catherine on 8 Jun 1868 Liverpool, the address is Naylor St for both parties and both are stated as minors. Father is Edward Johnson - a farmer.
First 2 questions - There is a church on Naylor st, is that why they give this address  (I have no records of them living there) and both parties were 20 years old so called minors as they are under 21, yes?

My next concern, I have built my tree out further for Edward, based on the information on the 1891 census that his son was born in Maghull, Lancashire. That fits with the Farmer occupation on the wedding cert and Maghull was very rural in the early 1800's but every document I have found (which fits every other aspect of this story) has as a Canal Boatman, his entire adult life, going back to 1851 census for 99 Damfield Lane Maghull when he was living with Catherine and his 6 kids, through to 1881 census when he has moved to 10 Clement St Liverpool, with his 2nd wife, Margaret.

So if you are still reading, here is my tree on Ancestry, please tell me I'm on the right track now, as the "farmer" on the wedding cert is really worrying me. - Thanks in advance  ;D
