Australia Lookups completed / Victoria Lookup - Thomas COURT
« on: Thursday 16 March 06 22:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hello out there,

I am trying to trace Thomas Mann COURT (b. 8 Jan 1868 in Carlisle, Cumberland). Family legend suggests that he might have emigrated to Australia sometime after 1881 and before 1891. That is the sum total of information I have. Thomas does not appear in the England census after 1881 nor in marriage or death indexes (so far).

However, I have found in the Victoria Public Record Office 'Unassisted Immigration to Victoria Index' the following entry -

Mr. Thos M Court, Age 20, Entry date August 1887, Ship name Oroya, Port B, Fiche 485, Page 009.

Can some kindhearted soul please check this fiche on a visit to the Record Office (or if they have access elswhere).

I know it's clutching at straws but sometimes they turn into a field full of wheat!

Many thanks,

Guy  :)

Lanarkshire / Hanmer COURT - Glasgow

Despite such an unusual name, Hanmer Richard COURT is proving difficult to trace.

This is a slightly different attempt to get some info. Hanmer was born 28 Feb 1864 to Edwin Court and Ann Amelia (nee Rudge) in Eign Street, Hereford. And I have made a post in the Herefordshire forum here in Rootschat.

But, and there is always a but .........

The only clue I have to his subsequent life is a posting on Genes Reunited, from about 2 years ago. That post indicated that he married a Sarah Cole(s) in 1884 (possibly in Hereford) and, more importantly for this forum, he died in Glasgow in 1915 (age 51 years).

I have checked the GRO indexes for their marriage, his name is relatively easy to spot, but no record. Also, there does not appear to be any entry in the English or Welsh census for 1891 and 1901.

So, did he actually marry in Scotland (Gretna Green may be a possibility) and then did they remain there? Can anybody tell me if Hanmer and Sarah Court appear in the Scottish Census for 1891 and 1901?

A post on the Herefordshire forum indicates that his death is recorded in Scotland in 1915, I'll order the certificate in the near future.

Final point for the keen family detectives historians who ask about the Genes Reunited message. I have replied several times but no reply from the original poster of the message. So frustrating as I can just feel a family relative out there somewhere ....... I just want to be able to say 'Come on in, your time is up and ...... have you got any old photos........'

Thanks for your help.

Herefordshire / Hanmer COURT - Hereford

Despite such an unusual name, Hanmer Richard COURT is proving to be difficult to trace.

Hanmer was born 28 Feb 1864 to Edwin Court and Ann Amelia (nee Rudge) in Eign Street, Hereford. He appears in the 1871 and 1881 census, living with his parents in Hereford. His occupation in 1881 is Brushmaker, the same as his father.

Then he disappears.  ???

The only clue I have to his subsequent life is a posting on Genes Reunited from a long time ago requesting further details. The information given on that post was that he married Sarah Cole(s) in Hereford 1884 and that he died in Glasgow in 1915 (age 51 years). Sarah Cole(s) was born c. 1856.

I have checked the GRO indexes for their marriage, 1883 and 1884, no record for Hereford. Similarly, there is no record in the 1891 and 1901 census for either of them.

Possibly they may have gone to Scotland by that time, can anybody check the Scottish BMD or Census please?

Ah! What about the Genes Reunited post I hear all you keen family historians (detectives?) say? I have replied several times over the past year but no reply from the original poster of the message. They probably have not renewed their subscription. So frustrating - the original person is probably connected - the Genes Reunited post is the only clue I have. Here's hoping that RootsChat can help!!

Many thanks,

Guy  :)

Cumberland / Thomas COURT - Carlisle
« on: Thursday 09 March 06 23:18 GMT (UK)  »
Where did he go?

Trying to locate Thomas Mann COURT b.8 Jan 1868 in Carlisle. Parents William Court and Mary (nee Richardson).

I can trace Thomas in 1871 census (Living with parents in 42 Court Street, Carlisle) and the 1881 census (Still with parents, living in Wetheral).

But, I can find no record of him in the 1891 and 1901 census. I have checked the death records on FreeBMD, again no obvious match. Also, the family headstone in Carlisle cemetery, which is comprehensive in its coverage, does not include Thomas Mann Court. I have even checked the CWGC website in case WW1 claimed him, still elusive!

Does anybody have any record of him after 1881?

Family folklore suggests that one of the family went to Australia. I wonder if his disappearance from the census is because he is on the other side of the world?

Grateful for any help.

Thanks,

Guy  :D

ps - One other bit of family folklore suggests that Court Street in Carlisle was built by the family. William Court was a builder. Anybody got any thoughts or knowledge?  :-\

Hello,

I am looking for any information on, or descendants of, Maud Lea Mary COURT who married Melford H HOPPLE (also spelt HOPPEL) in La Salle County, Illinois, Nov/Dec 1893.

Maud Court was born 18 Jan 1871 in Croydon, Surrey, England.
Her parents were George Court and Ann (nee Willis). They emigrated to the USA around 1872.

Maud had at least one sister, Sarah A Court, born around Dec 1864/Jan 1865, who also emigrated to the USA with her parents.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,

Guy  :)
