Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Albert Victor Wood
« on: Sunday 27 November 22 13:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Please can anyone decipher the nature of Albert Wood's occupation.  He was 14 years old in 1912 and employed by Midland Railway Company at the Bromsgrove Wagon Works.  It is his initial occupation I'm unable to read, except for the word "boy".  Later he was employed as a "Smith's Boy".

Sadly Albert left his job there to join the army and was killed in France in 1916.

The Common Room / Civilian WW2 Death Karachi, India
« on: Saturday 19 November 22 11:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Please can anyone suggest where I might find information about the death of Malta Lawrance Belmont Jackson whose death on 20 October 1944 is recorded in UK WW2 Civilian Death's 1939 - 1945.  He died at Drigh Road Aerodrome, Karachi, India.

Malta was born 9 Nov 1899 in Watford, Herts.  His parents were William Jackson and Louisa Jackson nee Atkins.  He served in the Royal Navy during WW1.  The 1939 Register records that he was a railway telephone inspector living in Beckenham, Kent with his wife Doris Ethel Jackson nee Weller.

According to Commonwealth War Graves Commission it appears that his death at the aerodrome was an isolated incident, there being no other casualties listed there.

I am hoping to discover why he was at Karachi, the circumstance of his death and where he is buried.

I'll be most grateful for any suggestions on where to search.  Resources I have tried so far are Ancestry, Find My Past, Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Forces War Records, Family Search and British Newspaper Archives.

With very many thanks

The Common Room / Ambrose Davis
« on: Thursday 17 November 22 10:21 GMT (UK)  »
I would be grateful for help with research into Mr Ambrose Mary Davis 1887 - 1942 (Mary is a family name given to both male and female members of his family).

I have been asked to complete his biography on a memorial to him and hope to discover details of his death and burial.

Ambrose died on 26 April 1942 in Burma (Myanmar) and his death is recorded in UK World War 11 Civilian Deaths 1939 - 1945. I have not been able to trace anything further about his death or burial in genealogical records or newspaper archives.  So far I have been unable to contact any of his descendants.

Ambrose was born in Falmouth, Cornwall in 1887 and married Vera Isabel Horner there in 1919.

In 1932 the UK Mechanical Engineer Records 1847 - 1938 records that he was a senior grade inspector of boilers in Rangoon, Burma.  I have sent an enquiry to the Institute of Mechanical Engineers archives in the hope that they have details of his employment and possibly of the circumstances of his death in their records, but I think the latter is unlikely.

Any suggestions on how I may find out about Ambrose's death, and in particular where he is buried will be much appreciated.  Thank you

The Common Room / Help with grave in Canada
« on: Tuesday 18 October 22 09:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Please can anyone give me any suggestions as to how I can confirm that a grave at Christ Church Anglican Cemetery (1307 Woodburn Road, Hannon, Ontario LOR 1PO) is my relative Charles Byng who was born in 1827 in Belbroughton, Worcestershire, England.  His parents were Robert and Hannah.

The headstone is in the name of Charles T Byng who died on 12 January 1899.  It is inscribed 76 years of age with the middle initial "T".  I am pretty sure this is my relative as the details correspond except that he was aged 72 not 76 and I have no record of him having the middle initial "T"

The 1891 census shows he was living at Binbrook, Wentworth South at the time of his death, which is about 4 miles from the cemetery and it seems too much of a coincidence for the grave not to be his.

This is the entry in Ontario, Canada, Deaths and Deaths Overseas, 1869-1948 which has his correct age at death as 72, however I'm not able to confirm that this record is in respect of the grave - but again having the same date of death seems too much of a coincidence for it not to be:

Name   Charles T Byng
Gender   Male
Age   72
Birth Date   1827
Birth Place   England
Death Date   12 Jan 1899
Death Place   Wentworth, Ontario, Canada
Religion   Episcopal

I have emailed Christ Church to enquire if they could check the burial register but have not received a response.  They have not read the message I left by Facebook Messenger.  I was hoping that there may be information on the burial register that would confirm his identity, such as his next of kin who was his wife Emma.  Her maiden name was Loach which on some records is also spelt Lote or Loat.

I messaged the manager of the Find A Grave memorial to ask if they have further information on him but have not received a reply.  This is the memorial:

Any suggestions as to how I can move forward with this will be very much appreciated.  Thank you.

The Common Room / Inventory of property
« on: Wednesday 07 September 22 12:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to decipher a large and fascinating inventory of the property of a relative who died in India in 1884.  Some of the writing is difficult if not impossible to read.  Please does anyone know what a "chisty" table and chairs would be?  A type of wood?  Or am I reading chisty incorrectly?

Many thanks

Cassie

Hi

Please does anyone know what "L J" stands for on this record of burial of Alfred Snell in St Mary's Burial Ground, Madras, India in 1857.  I also can't make out the service number.

Many thanks

The Common Room / William Prout
« on: Saturday 28 May 22 10:13 BST (UK)  »
Hello, please can anyone suggest where I might find out where William Prout 1856 - 1915 Wiveliscombe, Somerset and his family were in 1871?  I have not found them on the census, and in 1862 his father, William Prout (1814 - 1877) a tailor, was made bankrupt - so I wonder if the family were in the workhouse?  There is a Robert Prout, also a tailor,  listed as an inmate at Wellington Workhouse in 1881 - and I think this may be William junior's brother.  Many thanks  :)

The Common Room / Orphanage
« on: Saturday 29 January 22 11:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi - I wonder if anyone could help solve a family mystery please?

Grandmother Rose was born 1881 in Great Yarmouth, and her sister Alice born there in 1880.  Sadly their mother died in 1886 and orphanage records show that they were admitted to St Mary's Orphanage in Leeds in October 1890.

Their father who lived in Great Yarmouth was  presumably unable to care for them alone. He served for most of his life in the Royal Artillery and latterly in the coastal brigade at Great Yarmouth, and was a Chelsea Pensioner.  He died in the Union Workhouse in Yarmouth in 1896.

Rose left the orphanage in 1897 and Alice in 1894, and the 1901 shows that they were living in Morcambe.

The mystery is - why did Rose and Alice go to the orphanage in Leeds when they lived 200 miles away in Great Yarmouth and their father was still living there?  Any thoughts on this will be very much appreciated.

The Common Room / Help with memorial please
« on: Wednesday 01 December 21 09:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'd be really grateful for help with this please!  I've been asked to write memorials for two Cornish men who were civilian casualties of WW2.  They were lost at sea when the MV Adda sunk off Sierra Leone on 8 June 1941 - two of ten people who lost their lives.  They are William John Penaluna and Sidney Stephens.  I have traced William's family and some details of his life, but am having difficulty in finding anything on Sidney.

The UK WW2 Civilian War Deaths 1939 - 1945 "Deaths at Sea" (attached) show that Sidney was 35 when he died and therefore was born about 1906. Commonwealth War Grave Commission records that his father was J Stephens of Carharrack, and that his wife Lily lived at 13 Dolcoath Avenue, Camborne - this address agrees with probate records and the 1939 Register where her date of birth is 5 August 1890. I have not found Sidney on the 1939 Register.

I do wonder if Sidney was 35 in 1941 as this would make him 16 years younger than his wife. I think the most likely record of marriage for Sidney is to Lily M Burgoyne in 1933 in Redruth.

There is a 1911 entry for a Joseph Stephens living at Scorrier (one mile from Carharrack) who has a one year old son called Sidney, but I am unable to prove if this is the right family.

Thoughts on how to proceed will be very much appreciated, thank you
