Down / Struggling
« on: Friday 04 October 24 21:33 BST (UK)  »
I have a great grandmother, born in the UK but with Irish parents, namely her father who was born in Down but Ancestry keeps giving me conflicting information about this guy.
My great grandmother is Cecilia Veronica Rogan, born 15th October 1892 in Cockermouth, Cumberland, England to John Rogan and Bridget Carton........ I think  ::)
John was born 21st April 1852 in Down, Bridget was born 1st December 1850 in Glendalough, Wicklow.
The only evidence I have for these two is what Ancestry produced and I've found in the past its not always that reliable.
At some point in time John and Bridget came to England and maybe to Scotland first, and here is where evidence starts to conflict.
I have an1881 census showing John and Bridget in Cumberland, with 3 children, I also have a couple of the same name in the 1881 census in Edinburgh, I'm assuming the only coincidence is there names as I'm also assuming the Cumberland couple are my relatives, given the fact Cecilia was born here in 1892.
To further complicate the matter I have Johns parents listed as a Michael Rogan born 3rd February 1822 and Mary Ann Lyun born 1825 in Seavaghan, these 2 could be the parents of the John Rogan in Scotland though.
Both Michael and Mary Ann have at some point emigrated to the USA as they both have deaths listed in Philadelphia.
So confusion reigns, you can see why I'm struggling to make sense of all this and any help this forum can give in sorting it would be gratefully appreciated.

Census and Resource Discussion / Can It Get Any Weirder
« on: Saturday 27 July 24 17:02 BST (UK)  »
Searching the 1939 Register for my grandmother, I have found her in 3 places, in Gateshead with her mother, In Manchester with one daughter and also in Manchester with another completely different daughter.
I know which one is correct as the address ties in with her death 27 years later but how has this happened??
I'm pretty sure she never got to Gateshead  because she is listed as working and single when in fact she was a housewife with 3 young children, not sure about the 2 in Manchester but I'm thinking the register was complied on different days maybe.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Confused
« on: Wednesday 05 June 24 13:41 BST (UK)  »
Fairly new to genealogy so my main search engine until recently was the free  Family Search but eventually you realise you have to use other resources which you have to pay for so I enrolled with Ancestry and the info just came flooding in.
Unfortunately hiccups do occur and "facts" you find on one can be contradicted by the other, which is the case here.

I have a 4x grandfather called Richard Ashton, born 7th June 1778 in Warrington and died 30th March 1828 (I think).
Richard was married to Mary Cuthbert, born 14th January 1798 in Louth Lincolnshire and died 16th January 1870, again in Louth so I suspect this may not be the correct spouse, however, both Family Search AND Ancestry gave me their son, Richard Ashton born 19th January 1818 in Widnes and died
July 1887 In Prescott, married to Cecilia Baldwin born 6 May 1821 in Farnworth and died October 1899 in Prescott.
So, other than the Mary Cuthbert issue I'm fairly happy.
My bigger problem seems to be the father of the 1778 Richard.
Family Search names him as Richard Ashton born 29 June 1750 in Blackburn, no details of his death though, if he's the daddy it would make him 28 if he is 1778 Richards father.
His wife is listed as Jennet Whalley born 1752 in Blackburn and died 26 February 1774, again in Blackburn.
These facts would intimate to me that they are not the parents of 1778 Richard despite what Family search tells me.
Now, Ancestry......they have 1778 Richards parents as Richard Ashton born about 1738 in Middle Hulton and died about 1835, in the same place, married to Martha Hatton born 11th November 1739 In Great Bolton and died about 1783 in the same place.
My gut feeling is the Bolton Ashtons and not the Blackburn ones are my guys parents, I'm struggling to wrap my head around the Mary Cuthbert issue but as with all things in genealogy, its all about the evidence, which I'm struggling to find.
I suspect this is probably down to lack of experience in searching so any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Cheshire / Mary Ann Bell Nee Clutton
« on: Wednesday 10 April 24 21:12 BST (UK)  »
Struggling to find the death of a great grandmother.
She was born in 1883 to a Thomas Clutton and Sarah Jane Minshull, I think in Wheelock but appears to have been christened in Ellesmere Port, which in itself looks strange but her family were boat people.
On the 1901 census it shows her in Sandbach but with a birthplace of Ellesmere Port too.
She married my great grandfather, Joseph Bell in Wheelock in 1904, had 3 children, William, Elsie Jane, and Alice and then died in 1907, the same year as her mother.
Fly in the ointment time, I believe there is ANOTHER Mary Ann Bell of the same age died at the same time, which complicates matters.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated

Herefordshire Lookup Requests / Thomas Davies
« on: Wednesday 10 April 24 20:51 BST (UK)  »
Looking for the father of Uvedale Davies born 18th August 1776 in Mansell Lacy, I think he had a brother James born 1881, suspect there are probably others but I'm struggling moving this search forward.
Fathers name is Thomas Davies, mother Mary Parry, I'm assuming they are born in the area but you never know eh.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Scotland / Struggling
« on: Thursday 14 March 24 14:59 GMT (UK)  »
I have a 3 times great grandfather for which I have conflicting information.

Duncan McArthur (or other such spellings), I think born 22nd September 1822 in Kilvickeon, Argyll, to a father of the same name (no details) and a mother, surname McMaster.

He next appears on my radar on a boat to New York in 1849 age 23, which puts his birth date or his age in question, his birth place is listed as England, not Scotland on the immigration list too, although I cant find anyone in England of the same name around that time.

His time in the USA is well documented in their census records, his marriage to Jane Perry, and the birth of 9 children, along with his death in New York in 1883.

The bit I've not confirmed is from birth to entering the USA, is he a Scot or a Sassanach.
Any help in finding out would br gratefully appreciated.

World War Two / Not a Lot to go on
« on: Friday 08 March 24 23:07 GMT (UK)  »
Seems most posts start the same when looking up a soldiers service record.........................mine is no different  ::)

I'm looking for my wife's father, William Parkinson, born in Manchester 31/10/1919 which made him 20 at the outbreak of WW2.

Family story is he fought in Egypt but that's about it, she doesn't know ANYTHING about his war record, other than his favourite saying was "I've got sand in me boots, I know what I'm talking about"...................and I don't think he meant it was from Blackpool beach  ::)

Any help would be great, specifically where to look.

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Family Tree Template

Can anyone suggest a free family tree template that i can print off when completed.
I've started one on an Excel spreadsheet but it looks amateurish and not really presentable.

Family History Beginners Board / Stumbling Blocks
« on: Sunday 24 March 19 14:14 GMT (UK)  »
New to this forum and if I've posted this question in the wrong section, apologies  ;)
I always new that when i started on this journey the 'problem' relative would be my paternal grandfather  :P
Fortunately my father is alive but details he can provide (or not) are very scant.
The bits he does know about my grandfather (or thinks he knows).....................
That he was born on the Welsh/English border
That he was the black sheep of the family
That he left the UK around 1909 to go to America
That he returned home to fight in the great war (date unknown)
That he was wounded in the great war
That at some point in time he re-spelt our family name (from Davies to Davis) but i'm pretty certain he didnt do it officially
That he lied to my grandmother by subtracting 17 years off his true age  :-\
Now, the bits i do know...................
Firstly, i have a date of death which equates to my grandfather being born in 1889.
Secondly i have a marriage certificate which equates to him being born in 1894.
I have a copy of his marriage certificate which gives his fathers name.
Thirdly, I cant find any trace of the family in the 1939 register even though i have good information regarding my father and grandmother.
So, i'm basically stuck in actually finding anything other than the above about my grandfather and its his birth i'm really looking for.
Any suggestions regarding my next step would be gratefully appreciated
