Family History Beginners Board / Bigamous Marriage
« on: Tuesday 19 April 22 09:44 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me if bigamous marriages were common in the early 1800s. My 4 times great grandmother Ann Sellwood married William Bint on 26/08/1827 at St Mary The Virgin church Marlborough Wilts. The had a son Charles born in 1828, but in 1832 she married Elijah Davies on 13 December in Upavon Wiltshire. She describes herself as a widow on the banns but I can not find any record of William Bint's death. A William Bint married Amelia L(H)ooker on 28/09/1840 in Milton ?, Wiltshire parish church but I am not sure if this is the same person.  He died in 1868. All the marriages were in a small part of Wiltshire, would this have been possible ?

London and Middlesex / John Stanley Wood to Robert John Stanley Burns
« on: Sunday 12 July 20 09:54 BST (UK)  »
My great grandfather was born John Stanley Wood on 22/01/00 in London. Some time before his marriage in 1923 he either changed legally, or was using the name Robert John Stanley Burns. I have no ideal why this happened but I am struggling to find any records about him for the period from 1915 when he was discharged from the army under the name John Wood for being underage to his marriage in 1923 to Lilly Mitchell under the name Robert Burns. Due to his difficult start in life I think he may have been in prison during this time but I am not sure how to check this, can anyone help ? Thanks in advance

World War Two / Herbert Mitchell - Army Enlistment Checks
« on: Monday 13 April 20 11:46 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to research the life of my 2 x great grandfather Herbert Mitchell. He was born in Crowhurst Sussex on 02/10/1883. I know he had three children with my 2 x great grandmother Harriett Farmer but they never married. Army records show that he signed up to the Royal Field Artillery on 17/12/15 army number 177366, and was discharged as medically unfit on 18/04/17. At the time of his enlistment he was living a Fenchurch Street in Folkestone with his wife Alice and daughter Grace. The form states they married in Eastbourne in 1911. There is no record of the marriage that I can find and I believe that Alice was Alice Phoebe Coddington born in Sussex in 1880. She married William Prevette in 1897 and they had a daughter Grace in Dec 1906. In the 1911 census Alice is living with her husband and 3 children in Eastbourne. In the 1939 register Alice is still living with Herbert in Folkestone and there is another child Thomas Herbert Prevette born on 05/07/18 that I have assumed is Herbert and Alice's son. Her daughter Grace is living next door with her family. Alice dies on 17/04/42 in Folkestone but Herbert lives on to 1962. Looking at other Prevette family trees there are no mentions of Alice leaving her husband and Thomas is shown as Alice's eldest daughter Catherines son. Herbert's army record also shows that he had previously been discharged from the navy but I cant find any record of this. My question is would the army have carried out any checks on the marriage details when he enlisted and was it common for people to lie on the forms to ensure that in the event of their death a war pension was paid to a person they regarded as their wife although this was not legally the case

Family History Beginners Board / Harriett Carroll
« on: Sunday 23 February 20 09:37 GMT (UK)  »
My 2 x great grandmother was born on 12/04/1881 in St Saviours London. I think her mother was also called Harriett and her father John Carroll but I can not verify this. I know she married a Arthur Albert Savage in Sussex on 17/02/1909 and in 1939 they were still together and living in Newhaven Sussex. She died on 30/10/1944 in Newhaven. I have been unable to trace any records for her between the period of her birth until 1900. On the 1911 census she is married to Arthur but has four children from a previous relationship - these children are Rose born 1900 Dorking Surrey and Lilly George and Mary all born in Battle Sussex in 1902 1905 and 1907 respectively. On the birth registrations some are listed as Carroll's and some as Mitchell. Mitchell is the name given for all of them on the census. I can find no record of her marrying a Mitchell or any record for her in the 1901 census. In the family it was said that she was from a "gypsy" family and her son George  according to gypsy tradition as the eldest son took the mother's maiden name. I would be grateful for any help in relation to gypsy records or specifically for Harriett.

Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / James Theodore Vautin 1776-1857
« on: Saturday 07 September 19 15:39 BST (UK)  »
My research shows that my 4 x great grandmother Sarah Vauntin married William Frederick Treble on 24/08/1933 in London. She was born on 30/09/1812 and her father was James Vautin. From the 1851 census it shows his occupation as Clerk of the Bank of England and he had a servant living with him. One of Sarah's brothers gives his occupation as a gentleman on his marriage certificate and his father is also listed as a gentleman. My 4 x great grandfather William Treble is shown on the census from 1841 to 1861 as possibly a labourer/carpenter a builder and porter. He was the illegitimate son of Mary Treble born in North Petherton Somerset in 1815. I am struggling to see how Sarah & William would have met as her family seem considerably more well to do than Williams. Would I be correct in thinking that the Vauntin's were a wealthy family and it was unusual for such a marriage to have taken place.

Thanks in advance for any help

Family History Beginners Board / Folan family Spidal galway ireland
« on: Sunday 04 August 19 09:39 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information regarding my grandmother Sarah Folan who was born in Spidal on 08/12/1919. Her parents were Thomas and Bridget Folan. Thomas Folan was born in the Aran Isles and married Bridget around 1910. Bridget's maiden name was believed to have also been Folan and it is thought that she went to America some time in the early 1900s but then returned and married Thomas. Sarah was one of 12 or 13 children but I have been unable to trace any definate records for her or any of her siblings. I know several moved to both the UK and the USA, and one Maria (or Mariah) died as a teenager in the 1930s. The family were relocated to Meath and Thomas died there in 1956, and Bridget in 1982 at the age of 96. My grandmother Sarah moved to London around 1937, married and had seven children dying in Margate Kent in 2005. Records in the UK sometimes show her maiden name as Foley not Folan. Any information on the Folan family would be much appreciated

The Common Room / Change of name
« on: Saturday 01 June 19 21:41 BST (UK)  »
I believe my great grandfather changed his name from John Stanley Woods to Robert John Stanley Burns sometime before his marriage in 1923. Can anyone tell me how easy it would have been to do this and any possible reasons why people change their name.

Thank you
