« on: Thursday 28 January 21 02:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, I know the State Library NSW holds microfiche pre 198, but can anybody tell me which government body would hold Wills/Probate records post 1985? I'm searching for a possible Will of Milton Francis McGuire, who died 30 October 1985.

Australia / Were passports required to travel overseas in 1935?
« on: Saturday 21 November 20 05:06 GMT (UK)  »
I have a passenger list of an Australian immigrating to England in 1935. Would they have needed to apply for an Australian passport to travel and are those records available to search?

Armed Forces / Please identify and date military uniform
« on: Sunday 01 November 20 09:51 GMT (UK)  »
I have a photograph (attached) of a man born in Australia in 1875 and possibly served in the military in India for 2 years. I would imagine this was taken in the 1890s. Can any of you knowledgeable people identify what regiment he would have been in based on his uniform please?

Thank you.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 17th Century Will examples?
« on: Thursday 20 August 20 08:51 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I have a Will from 1630 and will be attempting to transcribe the 5 pages. I'm aware of the tutorials from the National Archives which cover handwriting styles, but I wondered whether there was a transcribed example online that I might refer to. I'm not familiar with much of the terminology used and was hoping for a "leg up" before I take on this task.

Australia / Charles Pearce b 1867 Albury NSW
« on: Thursday 25 June 20 07:32 BST (UK)  »
Hello again, I'm asking for help in finding information on Charles PEARCE who according to his death cert was born in Albury NSW in 1867. He died in Fremantle WA in 1916 and was buried in the Catholic Cemetery, having married Mary RYAN abt 1906 in Fremantle and fathered 4 children. He was a carpenter by trade, who arrived from NSW about 1896/7. I have him listed in electoral WA electoral rolls from 1903 - 1916.

His father is listed as PEARCE and mother MCKINNON (no given names listed). I've not found a birth record for him in NSW BDM.

I am seeking help in finding his birth and also the marriage of his parents and any siblings he might have had. It's possible his parents may have been immigrants who had married prior to arriving in Australia, but so far, I have not been able to establish any links.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

On board was a man named Texas Weston b 1900 and his wife Charlotte nee Wells and their 4 sons. A newspaper article https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/188432545?searchTerm=%22Texas%20Weston%22&searchLimits= stated that he was an American who arrived in Sydney in 1925, married Charlotte, who was from Tasmania and was about to embark on a world trip, taking in the UK and New York.

I cannot find a passenger list on subscription websites, so would appreciate any suggestions as to where else I might look.

Australia / Will of a surviving WW2 soldier
« on: Tuesday 24 December 19 05:34 GMT (UK)  »
Where can I look for the will of a surviving WW2 Australian soldier, written whilst in the Australian Army? Would a copy still be held with the army? I can find no record of his will on the PROV website. I know a will was made during the WW2 conflict because it is mentioned in his army papers (found on the NAA website) that his certificate and will were sent to him after he was discharged. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Gloucestershire / Birth/Baptism of William Colston b 1852 Bristol St Phillips
« on: Saturday 23 November 19 06:09 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for the birth/baptism details of William Colston, born 1852 Bristol St Phillips. It appears he enlisted in the Royal Engineers (Regimental No 11521) in 1872, served in the Ashantee War and received a medal for his conduct at the battle of Coomassie. He obtained his discharge at Hong Kong on September 26th 1878 and was then employed as an overseer in the Public Works Dept. Hong Kong. In July 1880 he joined the NSW Artillery and was dispatched to Sudan in 1885. In 1885 having meantime risen to the rank of Sergeant he was discharged at his own request. In 1886 he was presented with the Sudan Medal. In 1891 was convicted and hanged for the double murder of a couple in Narbethong, Victoria.

I have much information regarding this man after he came to Australia but it's his UK records I seek.

Having made every attempt to search for his birth/baptism, he is not to be found in GRO UK, FamilySearch, or the main subscription websites. He's not to be found in the 1861 or 1871 census either. I would dearly love to find his parents and siblings.

Can you help?
