The Common Room / 1921
« on: Wednesday 01 December 21 17:29 GMT (UK)  »
I have been told that Kew have announced that Manchester Library and Cardiff will also be free hubs for the 1921 census. I think it will be like a stampede on January 6th but good to know for later on.

Armed Forces / Army cap
« on: Thursday 11 November 21 19:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hello. while clearing my late father in laws house we found a black army cap with red piping and the badge of Royal Army Ordnance Corps which was his brothers unit as dad was in the Pay Corps. All the photos show them in khaki so we are wondering why the cap is black and how did he get to keep it? We found  letters about returning army property. It is surprising the amount of work that went into making a cap. I tried to attach a photo of it but it won't do it. Thank you

my Auntie Ethel was born in 1921 so has recently been uncovered, I knew where she was and she was married in February 1945  but her whole entry has been crossed out in pink ink and it says  See page 19  maiden name crossed out and married name added  with NMA above  M  and the date 11/5/45.  Anyone know why she was crossed out?  Thank you

Lancashire / Missing Burial
« on: Sunday 19 September 21 11:32 BST (UK)  »
In the 1841 census at Middleton  there is Paul Halliwell 60, wife Alice 40 and 4 children, in 1851 Paul is a widower, but I can't find a burial for Alice 1841-51? His first wife Ann was buried at St Leonards in 1830 and 3 of his children,  are the burial records not complete?
 Thank you

Lancashire / Excise Duty
« on: Wednesday 07 July 21 15:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi,  I found this document on LANCAT
Borough of Oldham
Take notice I shall appeal & do appeal to the general quarter sessions to be holden next after the expiration of 20 days from the judgement given this day by (3 Justice of the peace for the borough of Oldham) in the matter of information exhibited by me Robert Young on behalf of HM against Joseph Collin for the recovery of the penalty of 200 for breach of the excise laws by which judgement I feel myself aggrieved. Dated at Oldham 12 August 1868

  next sheet-----
Salford Sessions October 1868

I can't find any further mention of this case in the papers or on Ancestry, 200 was a lot in 1868 so would have thought there would be something, maybe he paid up or it was thrown out of court?
Thank you for any thoughts

The Common Room / 1939 Puzzle
« on: Thursday 01 July 21 12:38 BST (UK)  »
I have been looking for a lad born October 1922 so he was only 17 at the time of the register, there is only mum, dad & gran at home in Wembley, he was an only child so doubt they would allow him to join up so young. He died in 1976 so should be showing on the register?. He was at home in the 1947 electors roll as a service voter, so where could he be, maybe at university somewhere?  Wonder if he will show up when his 100th birthday passes?. In the register his mother Alice is transcribed as Alkice and his gran Alice Collin is Colkin, no wonder you can't find people.

Technical Help / Scanner Problem
« on: Tuesday 18 May 21 14:07 BST (UK)  »
I have a Cannon printer/scanner plumbed into an Acer Aspire laptop which has worked fine for almost 2 years but now when I click on  new scan I get a message saying  No scanner detected. Yet the printer works fine? I have been told to uninstall it and then reinstall it but I thought I would ask for advice before messing with it as I don't really know what I am doing

World War One / Mesapotamia
« on: Thursday 18 March 21 14:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, my grandad said that his unit marched into a place and he discovered that as he marched in, his uncle Albert had marched out, this can only be Mesapotamia in 1916-7. Grandads record has not survived but Alberts has, I have been trying to make sense of it.
Albert was in the 36th Brigade Royal Field Artillery 1905-08 and when he was recalled in 1914 he was a Gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery, he was in the Expeditionary Force France 1914-15, Expd Force Mediteranean 1915-16 and Expd Force Mesapotamia 1916-18.
With the Med  Force his unit is 10 div ann park? and with the Mesopotamia Force A/55 Brigade.
Does anyone know where these units went to?   Many thanks
