The song referenced on the back is from 1927 but I'm not sure if it was written on at a later date?

I have a 40 cM match on LivingDNA who has also tested on Ancestry where we do not match at all. I know you can get false positives in very low cM levels, but is 40 cM not a bit high for such a thing to occur?

(I also manage my father's test and he fails to match the user in question on Ancestry too - we all match at around the 40 cM level on LivingDNA)

Could this be part of the way Ancestry filters out presumed pile up regions? The 40 cM match and I both have ancestral heritage in similar regions (North East England). Must admit I'd never heard of the term until doing a bit of research this morning so may be off base on that one... but all I can think of?

Lincolnshire / Atkinson family
« on: Thursday 05 November 20 14:22 GMT (UK)  »
I've struggled and procrastinated on this line of family research for a while so would appreciate any pointers.

I'm looking specifically at the children of Robert Atkinson and Fanny Hancock who lived in Gainsborough (and Louth in 1911). They had seven children: Thomas (1892-1950), Ellen (1893-?), George (1895-1952), Robert (1898-?), Herbert (1900-1973), John (1902-?) and Annie (1909-1938).

The ones with deaths dated above are all accounted for but I'm not sure where to look for the missing ones. I have birth certificates for all three which give me exact DOBs but this only been helpful in one instance. I suppose Robert could have served in the latter years of the war but haven't been able to find him on any war dead listings. The names are all quite common so not easy.

Ellen was born 16/08/1893. Robert on 23/03/1898. John on 21/03/1902, all three in Gainsborough. Ellen I found working as a servant in 1911 at Fillingham Castle and I loosely pencilled in a marriage between her and Percy West in 1920 in Gainsborough.

There's a John Atkinson of the same DOB found in 1939 living in Downham, Norfolk which seems like a good possibility. I couldn't find a convincing death for him though but if he moved across the country it may be difficult to find having a name as common as his.

I've got nothing at all on Robert. I should mention that two of his brothers (George and Herbert) served in the navy so I'm open to the idea he did too.

Thanks for reading, any ideas appreciated!

I take the photographer to be G. Wynspeare Herbert from Gainsborough Studios in Lancaster, if google results are anything to go by. Have attached the back of the photo also.

Seems like Herbert was active in the business from the late 1910s through to the early 40s. I (in my total ignorance about historical fashions and hair) took the photo to be late 10s/early 20s, but looking for either correction or validation! Many thanks in advance.

Any ideas on the date appreciated. Also attached a picture of the back in case that is helpful.

Photograph Resources, Tips, Tutorials / Remini Photo Enhancer
« on: Friday 13 March 20 13:31 GMT (UK)  »
Did a search but couldn't find any reference to this on the forums.

I highly recommend playing around with an app called Remini. It uses smart AI upscaling to "enhance" photographs to an incredible degree. Here's an example Twitter thread: https://twitter.com/StuartHumphryes/status/1235234622033850368

Now of course it is still very much a gimmick in the sense that it is guessing detail (the image is "fake" on some level), but it's still miraculous and pretty jaw-dropping seeing people brought to crystal clear resolution. It works better on some images than others (in terms of uncanniness), but every one I've tried has been interesting and quite revealing. I recommend trying it out. You get three for free and then the rest you have to wait 15 seconds through an advert, unless you pay for the full version. There's no computer based app unfortunately but works on Android and iOS.

Durham / Can you locate William Forster in 1911?
« on: Monday 17 February 20 23:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I'm trying to locate William Forster, born about 1875, who lived in South Shields. He appears in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses, living at home with his parents (William and Elizabeth) and siblings in Curry Street, Jarrow.

Between 1901 and 1911, I believe both of his parents died. I cannot find either William or his sister Dorothy (born about 1878) in 1911 anywhere. I thought maybe William died too, but I cannot find any convincing candidate for someone by his name dying in that time of the right age.

At some point in the 1880s, this family decided to start calling themselves Foster as opposed to Forster, so I have tried looking for both Fosters and Forsters but to no avail either. I would be super grateful for any fresh perspectives on this.

Edit: should also mention that all three censuses also give Jarrow as his birth place (same with sister Dorothy).

New Zealand Completed Requests / Help with NZ emigrant research
« on: Wednesday 08 January 20 18:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all. Just discovered something fantastic on Ancestry - a letter written by my g-g-grandfather to his brother in law in which he describes leaving England for New Zealand with his son. This is news to me. I did wonder why I couldn't confidently place his death (assuming beforehand he died in England), so this explains a lot.

His name was Robert Atkinson, born in 1868 in Lincolnshire. He states in the letter he travelled to New Zealand with his son Herbert, born 1900 ish also in Lincolnshire. They travelled in 1939, just after the outbreak of war and the letter is addressed from Auckland.  I looked them up to try to find deaths - a good bet for Robert is a 1942 death since the age tallies, and Herbert's perhaps in 1973 (no other Herbert Atkinsons?). To order the actual death certificate looks like expensive business though.  I've never really done any research into family history that takes place outside of the UK, so this is my first foray into international waters, so to speak (albeit commonwealth ones!). Any pointers appreciated - would like just simply  to confirm their date of deaths (and where they died specifically), if Herbert married and had children etc. Thanks!
