The Common Room / Receiving Poor Relief under her maiden name?
« on: Monday 05 April 21 21:29 BST (UK)  »
I have found an ancestor of mine in the West Yorkshire poor law records. She applied for poor relief several times in the 1910s for herself and her children after her husband deserted her. By this time she was receiving a weekly maintenance payment from her husband. However, I’ve noticed she is mentioned in one entry under her maiden name. The address is correct but her age is out by a few years. Does this mean she was potentially trying to claim twice - once under her maiden name and once under her married name? Or could she simply have reverted back to her maiden name after their separation? She died and was buried under her married name!

England / Sarah Williamson - missing person in 1800
« on: Thursday 11 March 21 14:33 GMT (UK)  »
I have the will of my ancestor, Robert Tebbett, who was a "gentleman" of Enderby in Leicestershire. In his will, he provided for all of his children, including "Sarah the wife of John Williamson for her better support... who hath been absent and not heard of for a considerable time". Her father intended to leave her £30. I have not found a baptism for Sarah, this will is the only reason I know she existed! I would love to find out what happened to her if I can.

I have searched for a marriage between a Sarah Tebbett and a John Williamson but no luck. There was a marriage at Manchester on 16 December 1775 between "Sarah Tabbott" and "John Williams". Could this be her?

If so, can anyone think of why she would marry in Manchester?

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Confusing DNA matches
« on: Saturday 27 February 21 14:24 GMT (UK)  »
I have a DNA match with 45cM shared. We also share eleven other matches. Three of them have trees which I’ve been able to view and all three are descend from the same couple although I can’t work out how this couple fit into my tree yet.

At a guess, how far back are we talking for a match with 45cM? The other two matches with trees share 34cM and 44cM.  ???

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Would a couple marry 27 years after birth of first child?
« on: Monday 15 February 21 13:50 GMT (UK)  »
Through DNA, I have confirmed I am descended from William Husband (he married Elizabeth Wardale in 1780) who was baptised 1 Sep 1754 in Liverton, the son of William Husband. He also had two sisters - Dinah and Elizabeth - who were both baptised at Liverton in 1752 and 1756. The parish register doesn't give a name for the mother for any of the children but I've found a marriage between a William Husband and a Dinah Cornforth which took place at Liverton on 3 Dec 1779 - 27 years after the birth of William Husband Jr. Is this likely to be the people I'm looking for? There aren't any obvious marriages prior to 1752 in the Liverton registers.

Struggling to read the surname of Catherine who married John Norford at Clifton Campville in February 1734. FindMyPast has her transcribed as “Catherine Downbelon” but I’ve never heard of it before??  ???

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Hit a brick wall already!
« on: Wednesday 27 January 21 12:17 GMT (UK)  »
I have been helping out a friend with their family tree and seem to be stuck in a rut already. So far we have traced his ancestors to Elland in the 1901 census...

(Class: RG13; Piece: 4127; Folio: 102; Page: 43)

Caravans fairground, Elland, Yorkshire

Henry Crampton, Head, 34, Steam Roundabout Manager, born Leeds

Helen Crampton, Wife, 26, born Sheffield

John H Crampton, Son, 8m, born Clayton West

“John H Crampton” was actually John William Crampton. His birth was registered in 1900 in Wortley R.D. His father “Henry” was actually John Henry Crampton. We have no more information about his mother Helen at all because, by 1911, John Jr was living with his father’s sister Ellen Cookshaw.

What we are struggling with is finding a marriage for John Henry or Henry Crampton and Helen. I would love it if anyone could give us a nudge in the right direction please  ;D

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Wray Family of Huby
« on: Sunday 30 August 20 21:00 BST (UK)  »
The Wray family I’m interested in were living in Huby in the early 19th century, headed by my ancestor Thomas Wray, a husbandman. He married Hannah West in 1796 at Sutton-on-the-Forest in the presence of John Appleby and Thomas Hutchson. Thomas and Hannah had at least eight children who I’ve managed to trace marriages and deaths for.

I would really love to find out what became of Thomas and Hannah and maybe locate them in the 1841 census if they were still living. I’ve been unsuccessful so far though  ;D Hannah was the sister of William West, another ancestor of mine, so I know she was born about 1775 in Bishop Monkton.

Staffordshire / Help finding Sarah's baptism
« on: Wednesday 26 August 20 12:33 BST (UK)  »
Does anybody have access to the parish registers of Wednesbury in Staffordshire please? I am looking for the baptism of Sarah Jenkins who was married to David Hill at Walsall on 11 July 1813. The 1851 and 1861 censuses both have Sarah's place of birth as Wednesbury and her year of birth as circa 1794/5.  ;D Thanks
