England / 1939 Register question
« on: Tuesday 13 April 21 09:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I was under the impression that military personnel were not included on the 1939 Register. However, I'm researching someone who was in the Royal Engineers at this time and I think I have found him at Waterloo Road in Lambeth, as part of a big long list of people who all appear to be army/navy/RAF.
What might the reason for this be?
Thanks.

Scotland / Ruling out incest
« on: Tuesday 06 April 21 16:46 BST (UK)  »
I've found a Roman Catholic baptism record for someone born illegitimate in 1905 which states that the father was 'William Fraser as the mother says'. The trouble is the mother is also a Fraser and has a brother named William, and both of them live in the family home in 1901 and 1911.
They lived in a small parish and my census searches for more men of this name in the area do not offer as many other options as I'd like!
It's probably not an incestuous birth, but does anyone have any advice on how I could rule this out more definitively?
It seems very unlikely to me that she would have had the child baptised and actually named her brother as the father right?!

Canada / Cupar, Saskatchewan
« on: Tuesday 23 March 21 16:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm researching someone who emigrated to Canada from Perthshire, Scotland in 1912 and lived in Cupar, Saskatchewan. He was a ploughman/farmer. I just wonder if anyone with more Canadian knowledge could tell me anything about the history of this town? Any ideas why he might have ended up there?

Thanks :)

Lanarkshire / Help finding Sutherland family 1861
« on: Monday 01 March 21 21:56 GMT (UK)  »
I'm researching a woman named Flora Christie nee Sutherland (????-1903).
I think I have found her on the 1871 census at 35 South Coburg Street, Glasgow:

John Sutherland Head Widower 50 Stone Labourer South Leith
Flora Daughter 19 Wool Weaver Glasgow
William Son 17 Iron Moulder Glasgow
Margaret Daughter 12 Scholar Glasgow
Margaret McKay Sister-In-Law 40 Housekeeper Islay

I cannot find them anywhere on the 1861. I believe the youngest child Margaret was born in Calton, Glasgow in August 1857. Their mother was called Isabella McKay (the sister of Margaret) but I also can't find a death record for her.

Please help!

Europe / Scottish-born child of Italian parents
« on: Thursday 18 February 21 11:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I've been asked by someone to research her mother, who was born in Scotland in 1911 to Italian parents. I'm not familiar with the citizenship situation at this time. Would she have been considered an Italian or British citizen? I would have assumed she would be British, but my friend who's asking seems to think she was Italian and at some point would have renounced this to become officially British...?
Thanks.

Suffolk / Robertson/Markham marriage
« on: Thursday 04 February 21 17:52 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for the record of a marriage between Mary Markham and Alec Robertson (sometimes Alec Moncrieff Robertson). According to the 1911 census they had been married 14 years so around 1897?? My guess is the marriage would have taken place in Bury St Edmunds or in her home parish of St Neots, Huntingdonshire. Really struggling to find the official record - is it possible it was lost? Is it possible they weren't technically married even if she repeatedly appears as Robertson/wife/widow on numerous documents?

Scotland / Information for Alec Moncrieff Robertson
« on: Sunday 24 January 21 11:58 GMT (UK)  »
I have a birth certificate for an Elizabeth Ellen Robertson, b1905 in Bury St Edmunds, which states her father's name as Alec Moncrieff Robertson and her mother as Mary Markham. I have also found the family on the 1901 and 1911 census.
Based on family lore, Alec was possibly born in Scotland. The 1911 census gives his birth place as Inverness. But the 1901 gives his birth place as Carlisle. I can't find a result for an Alec/Alexander Moncrieff Robertson in Scotland or England. There are quite a lot of results when I search without the middle name, but I have no other information to verify which could be him  :-[
To make it worse, I cannot find a marriage for Alec and Mary in England or Scotland (the 1911 census says they've been married for 14 years suggesting a date c1897).
Does anyone have any advice for how to start narrowing this down?
