Shropshire / Timothy Clarkson - varying ages struggling to trace him
« on: Tuesday 05 September 23 21:40 BST (UK)  »
Timothy has been one ancestor I've come back to many times and can not get past him. So I'd thought I'd ask for some help/advice.

1807 - Timothy Clarkson married Mary Jones in Stapleton, they were both of that parish. Witnesses are Ann and Richard Blaney

1841 - Leebotwood, Timothy, Ag Lab, aged 55, born out of county
Mary, aged 50, born in county

1851- Leebotwood, Timothy, Ag Lab, aged 80? (mark through age), not known birthplace
Mary, aged 73, clungunford

1853 - Timothy dies Leebotwood aged 87.

1860 - Mary dies Condover aged 86 (newspaper confirmed widow of late Timothy Clarkson of Leebotwood)

So for Timothy I have the following possible birth years , 1786,1771,1766 with no known birth place. Is there anyway of tracing him back, or will he forever be my brick wall?

Thank you to anyone willing to have a look see for me :)

Shropshire / What Happened to Harry Steele?
« on: Saturday 15 May 21 15:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

Harry Steele was born 1880, Eccleshall, Staffordshire to George Steele (1833) and Fanny Harris (1844)
Harry enlisted with the 5th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry 21st Feb 1900, and was discharged 18th June 1901. He was in South Africa, 14/4/00 - 10/6/01. (Address at time of enlistment, Aston Farm, Aston, Shropshire)
On the 1911 census Harry's father George lists 3 of his children has died. I have worked out that Harry is one of these three... But I can't find a death or any other record for him.
So at some point Harry died betweem 10th June 1901 and the 2nd April 1911.
I have checked freebmd for deaths of a Harry Steele within those years and these isn't one of the right age.
Can anyone help point me in the right direction to find him.

Thanks
Katie

Australia / Alexander and Hilda Steele NSW
« on: Sunday 22 November 20 18:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I've been researching my family tree for many many years but have yet to really do any research outside of the UK. In aid of assisting my DNA matches I am trying to trace as far to present day as possible but I'm now coming across family that went to Australia and struggling to find much about them.

My g.grandfathers brother Alexander Thomas Steele bn.1876 Cotes, Staffordshire, England (sometimes Lipley farm, Shrophire) was in 1901 a drapers assistant in Birmingham, England and the next I find him... He has died in 1926 in his company's building in Wentworth Avenue, Sydney. There are several newspaper reports about it and they tell me he had separated from his wife Hilda and they had one child together. I have found again from the newspapers that Hilda died a year later.

My struggle is I can't find documents showing when he left to go there. I'd like to know when they married and who the child is.

Can anyone help point me in the right direction?

Many Thanks

Katie

London and Middlesex / Charles Harding... unlocatable before 1864
« on: Tuesday 23 June 20 21:42 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I've recently come across a difficult ancestor and as much as I like a challenge I really can't seem to solve this one.

Charles Harding bn1842 Middlesex he married Lucy Rowley in 1864 Dudley, Worcestershire. On his marrage certificate his father is Thomas Harding, contractor. He marries again in 1884, and states the same father & occupation.  Charles' occupation is boatman.  I have looked for baptisms with Charles father Thomas to no avail... I have searched 1861 census hoping that at aged 19 he'd be a boatman and hopefully easier to find, but nope.
I saw his children stated as nephew on the 1891 census after the death of his first wife. I almost got excited... but nope it was his wifes family.

The only census I can't find Charles on after 1861 is the 1891. All his births apart from in the 1911 census state Middlesex. One looks like it says Willesden and another one Appleton Valley.

Have I missed something? or am I looking in the wrong place altogether?

Thanks, Katie

Shropshire / Weston of Kynnersley
« on: Monday 11 November 19 19:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

In need of some help solving the Weston family of Kynnersley... They all like to use the same names for their children.

Here is what I have so far...

My4xG,Grandmother Elizabeth Weston bn 1826, Kynnersley.
I believe her mother is Ann bn 1794 to William and Sarah.

Ann never married and had 3 illegitimate children that I know of Sarah 1819 and Thomas 1831, are the other two.

I'd like to see if I could go further back but I'm stuck at William and Sarah. There is a marriage 28/11/1791 for a William Weston to a Sarah Latham.

I can't find any other children to William and Sarah.

There is two other families at the same time in Kynnersley. Both William but with an Alice and Margaret.

I'm hoping that someone might be able to see something I haven't?!

Thank you in advance to anyone who has a peek at this one!

Katie :)

I am trying to find out the name of Thomas' mother.

I have just found his marriage certificate to his second wife that shows father to be John Jones, Shoemaker. But I am struggling to find a baptism for Thomas to show his mothers name.

So If anyone would like a challenge;

Thomas Jones c1800 Trefeglyws
married Elizabeth Swancott 1820, then Mary Davies 1863,
Lived at Bronhendre, Llanidloes. He was also a shoemaker.

Thank you :)

Worcestershire / Harris, Feckenham
« on: Sunday 23 December 18 10:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm hoping someone might like a challenge in helping me find more information of my Harris' from Feckenham.

I've traced them back to Thomas and Susannah Harris, who married 30 Sep 1766, in Feckenham.
Susannah is also a Harris.

They had 6 (I think) children; Susannah, Sarah, Ursula, Letitia, John and Philip.

I'm ideally wanting to go back another generation. I have done my DNA with ancestry and that shows that I have ancestors from southern England. Yet these Harris' are the closest I have to being southern.

Thank you and Merry Christmas

Katie

Shropshire / Susanna Harris bn 1813
« on: Saturday 24 November 18 21:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can help me solve this little puzzle of mine.
Susanna Harris is the sister of my 3xG.Grandfather Edwin Alexander. She was born 1813 Ashted, Birmingham. She is with her mother in the 1841 census in Madeley. Her mother Fanny who was born Madeley 1771, had remarried a Thomas Wilcox. And going by the transcribed age he was very much her junior. I believe Fanny died 1842.
I have been trying to find if Susanna married after her mother passed and have found a possible  marriage for a Susanna Harris, 1846 parish of Shifnal. Unfortunately atm I don't have a subscription to search any census's or parish records so I am relying on the free resources.
There is also a marriage for a Thomas Wilcox in the same quarter. I'm pretty sure marrying your step daughter was illegal then. Although it may not be the Thomas that married her mother.
Anyway, I have since found some christenings in Madeley with mother as Susanna Harris and father Thomas Wilcox. The one Reuben Thomas Wilcox was born 1840 and christened 1850. I've searched and can't find a birth registration for him. There is also a christening for Peter Wilcox same parents same day. I find it odd it lists Susanna with her maiden name on their baptisms.
There is a possible death for a Susannah Wilcox, 1861 aged 47. Also a marriage for a Reuben Thomas Harris Wilcox 1864.

I would like some help confirming if this is my Susanna Harris, if so is Thomas Wilcox her step-father and husband. And if Reuben was born 1840, where was he in 1841.

Thank you, the more I look into this the more confused I get.

Warwickshire / John Harris -bn1781 Glass Manufacturer Birmingham
« on: Saturday 17 November 18 22:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

This week I found a memorial for my 4xG.Grandfather John Harris. This stated that he was a Glass Manufacturer from Birmingham he died in 1820 in London aged 39 and his remains are in the Christ Church Yard London.
This led me to his Will, made while he was lay ill in London. It states he had a dwelling in Aston, Birmingham and a warehouse and premises in Birmingham. (It names a street but most I can read is that it begins with a B)
I have googled and searched everything I can think if to see if there is any information on his Glass making/warehouse.

As far as going any further back with his line, I'm finding this pretty difficult too. Going by his age when he died he was born 1781, however this is ten years younger than his wife.
He married his wife Fanny Guest in Madeley, Shropshire 1806.
They had I believe 6 children, John, Thomas, Sarah Ann, Susannah, Eleanor Guest and Edwin Alexander (my 3xG.G)
There is a John and Thomas mentioned in his will which I think he was owed money from.
Also mentioned in his will are
John Smith - brother in law
William Chambers of Birmingham - cousin
Isaac Pemberton - nephew

And there is a signature of Witness John James Harris with no indication if this is family too.

Can anyone help in either pointing me in the right direction or if you don't mind helping me look.

Thank you!!

Katie
