The Lighter Side / Political Correctness in census transcription
« on: Tuesday 11 July 23 09:43 BST (UK)  »
I am used to inaccurate transcriptions in the census as we all are but this is more than just someone misreading an entry.

Looking at the 1921 census in London on FindMyPast I came across a transcription which gave the person's place of birth as "Portstewart, Londonderry (Derry), Ireland". I thought it odd to say the least that anyone would write "Londonderry (Derry)" in 1921 so I looked at the original and it clearly says "Co. Derry, Portstewart, Ireland" so I can only assume that someone decided that was not politically acceptable today.

England / Changing name by deed poll
« on: Monday 26 June 23 20:05 BST (UK)  »
I have a Henry Stilz who in 1919 changed his surname by deed poll to Stiles ( Henry was born in London). He was married and had 4 children under 10. Would his wife also have to change her name by deed poll or did she automatically as Henry's wife become Stiles? and what about his children?

I found a notice about Henry changing his name in The London Gazette but although I can see other members of the family I can't see his wife.

thanks for any help

The Lighter Side / Impossible births
« on: Tuesday 22 March 22 12:06 GMT (UK)  »
I thought I had seen it all when a tree on Ancestry had one of my ancestors giving birth at the age of 122. Especially as the tree owner couldn't see a problem when I contacted them.

Today when searching for the parents of James Stebbings born about 1830 in Wisbech Cambridgeshire Ancestry suggested several trees which show his mother giving birth at the age of 285!!.  Do people not see that someone born in the 19th century cannot have parents born in the 16th.
Sometimes I despair of human intelligence.

Norfolk / Really helpful hints on Rootsmagic !!
« on: Tuesday 26 May 20 19:53 BST (UK)  »
I don't usually look at the "webhints" on Rootsmagic but I have been searching for years for the parents of my 4x great grandmother Ann Clarke (born around 1774, died 1835 in Wilton and married George Gotts in 1795) so when the hint said it provided the name of her father I thought I would take a look. It said "father unknown Clarke". I would never have guessed that her father's surname might also be Clarke !!

World War Two / WWII Death certificate
« on: Wednesday 14 November 18 11:44 GMT (UK)  »
My uncle William Fox was in the RAF and died in April 1944 when his plane came down in the Adriatic Sea. His body was never found so would a death certificate have been issued and if so could I get a copy?
thanks

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Alice Easton - who were her parents
« on: Sunday 27 August 17 14:57 BST (UK)  »
Please can anyone help me trace my 6x great grandparents.
I am looking for the parents of Alice Easton who married Charles Gill on 4 October 1755 at St Saviours, Southwark, London. Charles was a Thames Waterman. I am guessing Alice was born around 1735 and I have looked for her baptism under every variation of Easton I can think of including Eastone, Eston, Aston, Esson with no joy.
The waterman and Lightermen Binding Records show an Alice Easton binding apprentices in Rotherhithe at about this time so I assume this second Alice is my Alice’s mother which suggests her father was also a waterman.

thanks

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Baptism of Jane Sharford
« on: Friday 24 March 17 10:41 GMT (UK)  »
I cannot find a baptism for my 4x great grandmother Jane Sharford. She married Thomas Eddon/Eden in Asthall in 1794. On the 1841 census she is living in Asthall, gives her age as 75 and says she was born in county. She was buried in Asthall in January 1850 when her age was given as 80 so born sometime in the 1760s somewhere in Oxfordshire. I have tried all the variations of Sharford I can think of but still no sign.
Any help to find her greatly appreciated
Thanks Carolyn

Please does anyone have access to the Priors Lee parish records and could look up the baptism of Aaron Broadhouse or Broadhurst in 1884. He was born and died 1884 and I am trying to find his parents.

thank you

My family have passed down several documents ( dated May 1853 and October 1856) relating to the application by William Fox (my 3x great grandfather) to be admitted to the Freedom of the City of London. In all these documents William is stated to be the son of John Fox late of the 1st regiment of Life Guards. One of these documents also gives William's address and occupation so I know I have the correct William Fox.

John served in the Life Guards from 1793 to 1811 when he was discharged through injury.

So far so good but on both William's marriage certificates ( in 1841 and 1849) he gives his father as Charles Fox occupation Ostler.

William was born about 1818 and in all censuses gives his place of birth as St Georges in the East. I can find a baptism in St Geo in the East for a William in May 1818 to John and Sarah Fox ( who also had a son Charles baptised there), but I cannot find one for a William son of Charles Fox.

Would William have had to prove his father was John Fox when he applied for admission in October 1856 and if so is it possible to view this proof anywhere?

any suggestions as to how to solve this appreciated
Carolyn
