I wonder if anyone visiting Surrey History Centre would be able to check for a few baptisms for me please - all in Ss. Mary & Nicholas' Church Leatherhead.  The baptisms I'm searching for are for my grandmother and her two siblings.  Their names & dates of birth are:

  • Ella Beatrice Twyman.  Born 14th June 1915.
  • Grace Lillian Twyman.  Born 1st October 1916.
  • John Arthur Twyman.  Born 28th March 1918.

All were the children of Alfred John Twyman & Grace Harriett Kennard - I believe their address was 168 Kingston Road.

Any help would be really appreciated. :)

Kent / Joseph & Eliza Pluish of Frinsbury
« on: Monday 22 January 18 14:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all.  I'm having a bit of a problem is tracing a family through pretty much every record I can find, and hope that a new set of eyes might see something I've missed.  As part of my one-name study in the Twyman name, I've come across the attached marriage entry on CityArk - from All Saints' in Frinsbury.  The problem I'm having is that apart from this marriage entry, I'm not finding anything at all relating to Joseph Pluish (or indeed the Pluish surname at all) on either FindMyPast or Ancestry.

I've been hoping to find Joseph & Eliza together on a census return to find out what her place of birth & date is, as I'm at a loss as to who she is besides being the daughter of Thomas Twyman as noted on the marriage entry.  Anyone able to find anything at all please?  This is driving me a little bit loopy, if I'm honest.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Will of John Twymer of Chatham
« on: Sunday 23 April 17 11:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi all.  Would anyone be able to help me with deciphering and/or translating the Will of John Twymer of Chatham...I thought I'd be able to manage it, but the paleography and Latin is proving to be a little beyond me.  I've attached page one of the will below.

So far I've managed to get:
In dei nominae Amen.  Anno suo (can't read this bit - guessing it's the date?).  Ego John Twymer de Chetham undo testamenta (can't read the next bit - guessing it's to do with the last will & testament, of sound mind etc)
Or in English:
In the name of God Amen.  In the year??.  I John Twymer of Chatham hence will??

There's also a longer page 2, but thought I'd get the shorter section sorted first. :)  Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Thought I'd add that the will is from the Archdeaconry of Rochester, and the index gave it as dated 1453.

Hi.  By any chance would anyone be able to print off some copies of four wills at Maidstone History Centre for me please?  Their catalogue asks to use the microfilm copies, so I'd hope it would be a simple print off from the films. :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Father's Name on Marriage Entry
« on: Tuesday 21 August 12 21:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi all.  Got a bit stumped trying to read the name of a father from a marriage entry from the CCA collection.
The marriage is for a Murdoch Hugh McLeod & Mary Ann Maria Twyman in St. George's Deal (16th August 1894).  Can see that Murdoch MeLeod's father was a "R. Officer", which would seems to run in the family as Murdoch was a Royal Marine, but can't read that dad's name.  Anyone got any thoughts?
Many thanks.

Kent / Ada Twyman of Margate
« on: Wednesday 02 May 12 13:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi all.  Perhaps someone can help me, as I'm banging my head against the desk with frustration over this one. :p  I've been trying to trace the ancestors of an Ada Twyman who later in life emigrated to Montreal in Canada, where in 1908 she married an Ernest Simpson.  In her marriage entry she's noted to be the daughter of Henry Twyman & Lillian May Dike of Ramsgate in Kent.  Unfortunately I'm not able to find any trace of this couple at all anywhere outside of this marriage entry!
However I do have Ada on the 1911 Canadian census which gives her as born in 1888, and there are entries for an Ada Twyman on both 1891 and 1901 over here for an Ada born in Margate in the same year...but unfortunately she's not with her parents on either return.  There is no trace of her on the 1911 UK census.
I've received in the post this morning the only birth certificate for an Ada Twyman in Thanet for the year she was born (1888), which gives her as the daughter of Lily Twyman (a barmaid) with no father listed.
Now, would people agree it's possible that she's been a bit economical with the truth, as it were, at marriage, and she's swapped around the surnames of her parents?  Lily is quite close to Lillian, although I don't really like the idea of shoe-horning it together without any evidence.  Otherwise any advice on where to go next would be appreciated, as this has exhausted my 9-years of experience unfortunately.  :(
Many thanks.

Kent Lookup Requests / Wingham Parish Registers Marriage Lookup - TURNER/TWYMAN
« on: Thursday 12 August 10 20:01 BST (UK)  »
Perhaps someone could help me.  Would someone be able to check a marriage entry for me?  The entry is in the parish church for Wingham, on 1st March 1806 between Thomas Turner and Ann Twyman.  Really I'm just needing to know Ann's status on marriage...whether she was a spinster or a widow.  Needing to know to ascertain if it's a second marriage for an ancestors of mine, or if we're barking up the wrong tree.
Many thanks for any time spent. :)

The Common Room / Tramp on 1871 census
« on: Wednesday 16 June 10 22:41 BST (UK)  »
I've been trying to find out a bit about a Henry Twyman I've found trace of on 1871, where's he's in the police station in Nottingham recorded as a tramp...a widower, aged 32, born of Ford Kent.  This is where my knowledge ends.
I do, however, have a Henry Twyman on 1841 living in Foord in Herne in Kent, whom I'm toying with the idea of it being him.  I'm also aware of the baptism for this Herne Henry, as he was baptised on 24th March 1839 in St. Martin's Herne to William and Jane Twyman.  How likely is it that he'd have given his exact place of birth, especially so far away from home?  I've not come accross anyone doing this very often, but since he's in the police station on 1871...who knows?  I'm not away of a town called Ford at least in Kent.

London and Middlesex / John Glover marriage help c.1890
« on: Monday 17 May 10 09:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi.  Perhaps someone might be able to help me with a brickwall that has been frustrating me for several years now.  My 2x great-grandparents lived and raised children in different parts of Tower Hamlets during the 1890s, but as yet I've not been able to find a marriage...which is quite frustrating, given that I'm in need of the name of my 2xgreat-grandmother's father to narrow things down as she was a Jones. :p
Anyway, what I know is that my great-grandmother's (Beatrice Louisa Glover) birth certificate gives her parents as 'John Glover' (a general labourer) and 'Elizabeth Glover formerly Jones' of 40 Charles Street in the Mile End Old Town registration district.  She and her elder sister (Gertrude Elizabeth Glover) were baptised on 24th Jan 1894 in Christ Church Watney Street and on 3rd November 1891 in St. Dunstan & All Saints' respectively.  To my knowledge there were no children born before Gertrude, and the 1911 census gives John & Elizabeth as having been married for 20-years...placing the marriage sometime around 1890/1891.
To further complicate matters, neither of them were originally from London (John being from Dry Drayton Cambs, and Elizabeth being originally from Maesteg Glamorgan)...although I believe they had both left their places of birth by the time they married, as there is an Elizabeth Jones of Maesteg working as a servant in Avenue House Edmonton on 1881.
Perhaps someone might be able to help with breaking down this frustrating brickwall?  Any help anyone can give would be great appreciated.  :)  Thanks.
