Other Countries / Civil Records MAURITIUS
« on: Thursday 14 July 22 11:20 BST (UK)  »
Has anybody had experience with obtaining records from the Civil Status Division of Mauritius? I wrote some time ago about relatives who had died there or had been born there. The CSD replied - "Please send us a copy of your passport or ID card so that we can process the request. Once the document is ready, an officer will contact you for payments and courier or if you choose to have a relative collect your document."
I hadn't told them any specific details, e.g. names or dates, and wrote back asking for clarification. Six months later I haven't heard anything further. Any advice on how best to let them know what I'm looking for would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Family History Beginners Board / Patrick Doyle lost at sea
« on: Wednesday 20 April 22 10:34 BST (UK)  »
Following up on a post last year, I have been able to establish that Patrick my great great grandfather, Patrick Doyle, died on October 25/26 1859 when his ship, the Royal Charter, sank in a storm near Moelfre off the coast of Anglesey. I got this information from the ship's return document - Account of Foreign Going Ship to be delivered to the Shipping Master at [Liverpool].  He was about 38 years old and married to Bridget. They lived in Upper Wolfe street (or Woolf Street) at the time.
I have searched GRO for a death record, using both Anglesey and Liverpool District of Death criteria. I have also looked at newspaper archives but with no success. Any thoughts on where else I could look for a certificate would be greatly appreciated. I'm presuming there was a certificate somewhere as the 1861 census says that Bridget was then a widow.

Family History Beginners Board / North Wales/Wrexham marriage records
« on: Saturday 27 November 21 12:12 GMT (UK)  »
Two of my ancestors , George Lloyd and Mary Rogers, were married in Wrexham on December 31st 1833.

Theirs and the adjacent records I have looked at say "married .... with consent of Friends". Does anyone know anything about this form of consent? Was it unique to Wales?

Family History Beginners Board / Irish Marriage Records
« on: Friday 05 November 21 15:16 GMT (UK)  »
I have found an Irish marriage record (on FindMyPast) for potential relatives - Patrick Doyle (the transcriber has written this as Coyle) and Bridget Fox - married February 2nd 1842. Against some of the entries extra words have been entered, such as Bride Street. The record against Patrick and Bridget appears to read Graveyard. Does anyone know what these "annotations" are?

Family History Beginners Board / Recording census details
« on: Wednesday 29 September 21 09:41 BST (UK)  »
How did householders around the 19th century provide details to enumerators when a great many of them couldn't even write their own name? The National Archives states "an enumerator delivered a form to each household in the country for them to complete. The heads of household were instructed to give details of everyone who slept in that dwelling on census night,,,".

Family History Beginners Board / Tracing a ship's voyages
« on: Friday 10 September 21 15:31 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to verify whether or not my GGGrandfather was on the ship Royal Charter when it sank in 1859. I have contacted National Archives about crew lists (long story) but in the meantime wondered if it is possible to trace the dates when ships left port. I know the ship left Melbourne in August 1859 but I would like to find the embarkation date when it left Liverpool beforehand. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / Ashton in Makerfield or Ashton under Lyne?
« on: Wednesday 01 September 21 20:36 BST (UK)  »
John Barton, born circa 1820, appears in 1851 and 1861 censuses as born in Ashton, Lancashire. There appear to be two Ashtons in Lancs, plus 1 in Cheshire, and nailing down the right one would hopefully help me find a definitive birth record.
In 1851 he is 28 and living in Emma Ann Street, Liverpool; in 1861 he is is 39 and living in Old Hall Street. Is it possible to determine which Ashton is being referred to?

Family History Beginners Board / Charles White born 1833 in Denby, Yorkshire
« on: Thursday 26 August 21 12:10 BST (UK)  »
Charles' name appears in all but 1 census records from 1841 to 1901 and, from 1851, he is described always as a besom/broom maker, born in Denby. He is missing from the family census in 1881, but a Charles White appears in various Wakefield prison records. One of these was the prison census of 1881, which would fit with his absence from his home at the time. However, in the prison records he is described as a Quarryman, and he has facial cuts that would fit with that occupation. His age and place of birth fit with "my" Charles.
Does anyone have any thoughts on whether or not these are one and the same person?

Family History Beginners Board / Patrick Doyle died 1853?
« on: Friday 30 July 21 12:16 BST (UK)  »
My GGGrandfather Patrick Doyle was born in Queens county, Ireland around 1821. By 1851 he had moved to Liverpool with his family but had died by the time of the 1861 census.
The family lived in Woolf/Upper Wolfe street, Liverpool from 1851 until 1876 but the only GRO death certificate I can find that matches at all is for a Patrick Doyle age 32, who died in 1853 while living at number 22 Court, Bond Street. In attendance was Sarah Brian but I can't find any family link with her. so that puzzles me.
Any thoughts on the difference of address?
