Hi to all,

I've come across an ancestor's prison record and while I can understand most of what is being said on his physical description there is one that I'm unsure of - Sth?  The gentleman underneath has Sl - I presume, (but I'm not sure), that its to do with his build - I've seen Stout written as St but unsure as to what Sth is... Sl presumably "Slight"??  Any help would be much appreciated.

I have him as 5ft 3, Fresh (complexion), Dark Brown Hair, Hazel Eyes, Sth??, Oval (visage), aged 40 years and 6 months, scar on forehead and mole at left nostril?

Many tia

Michelle  :)

Family History Beginners Board / John Hanaghan - Macclesfield
« on: Saturday 16 September 23 12:18 BST (UK)  »
I have a bit of a puzzler - John Hanaghan Snr and his wife Mary, (nee Fairhurst), had children in Macclesfield, Cheshire circa 1915 -1922 - Amongst them was one John Hanaghan, born and died in 3Q 1915 - Thats fine.

Then another John Hanaghan pops up in 1920 on FindMyPast index of births - no death record and not recognised on GRO - just an attached note on FindMyPast stating "See D1922".

Then there is also a listing for another John Hanaghan in 1922 - recognised on GRO and FindMyPast BUT - the trouble is, his sibling Kenneth was born in SQ1922 (on FindMyPast Index - and GRO) - so I am just wanting to clarify whether the second, "live" John Hanaghan was born in 1920 or 1922?

There were no other Fairhurst and Hanaghan marriages so I'm certain the children listed are all belonging to Mary Fairhurst and John Hanaghan Snr - was there a mistake, late registration???  How could they have two Hanaghan children born in 1922, one, Norman, registered in September 1922 and then the mystery 1920/1922 John in December Q1922?? Any advice would be brilliant as its making my brain itch!

Thanks in anticipation

Wexford / Marriage between 13 year old and 19 year old????
« on: Sunday 03 September 23 10:57 BST (UK)  »
Good morning,

I've been working for quite some time, on and off, on my partner's great great grandfather, one Patrick Quigley who married Ellen Shea in Kilmacow, Kilkenny.  They married on 9th November 1886 and had their first child on 23 November 1886. This is sound information with sources to back things up.  Patrick was of full age and Ellen 21. (I thought that was full age in any case).  Ellens actual birth certificate does state she was born in 1867 so she lied on the marriage certificate/didn't actually know her true age etc.

The issue now is, while I've known his father's name is James Quigley, (taken from his marriage certificate) - his Mother's name was down in the tree as Mary Shee/Shea - and I'm not quite sure why it is down as Mary Shee - (possibly from way back when I copied other's information) - I've since found the marriage between James Quigley and Mary Shea and also a baptism and birth for their son Patrick Quigley - 30th May 1873!! - Birth was in New Ross and the baptism in Templeludigan - which would mean, if true, that young Patrick at just 13 and a half years married Ellen Shea who was 19....what is the true likelihood of this actually happening?

On census returns, Patrick has his place of birth as Wexford on both and in 1901 his age suggests a birth year of 1869, while in 1911 a birth year of 1867 - his death, in 1935, has his birth year as 1872!! His marriage from 1865 or earlier....any help would be most appreciated.  I have since deleted Mary Shee as I just can't see why she appeared in the first place.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Latin names on baptism entry
« on: Saturday 02 September 23 13:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I always thought I was pretty good at tranlating the latin names to their english equivalents on church records, however, this one has me flummoxed - I initially thought Mary, not noticing the second word beginning with A - So then I thought Mary Anne or Marianne....but now I'm not so sure - I know it is the child of William Shea and Mary Dunne - one of many - but what do others think this name is.

Good morning, here are two entries for the marriage of James Quigley and Mary Shea on 5th March 1867 - Was there an issue with the marriage?  I have tried to make out what is said on the first image - "disp? of the impediment of s? being obtained" and on the second image, under condition, instead of the usual Bachelor, Widow, Spinster etc it does state "? before married" - could anyone shed any light as I've not come across this before on any of my Irish Ancestors.  I thought religious issue? (One not baptised) - any help would be most appreciated with the wording.

Hi All,

I had what I considered to be quite a concise branch of information regarding a great grandfather, Frederick Herbert Manssuer - I had his birth, both his parents and their marriage record, his siblings, all census returns available, and his untimely and rather dramatic demise, burial, the works - until I had a look on GRO for his birth reg,(just to bulk up sources et al and despite finding it already on FindMyPast),  and that of his individual siblings.....and I got rather a shock when I found that, while the first born child, Alfred Mansswer, born 1891, (incorrect spelling on the original doc but definitely one of the siblings), had the expected parents recorded, Christopher Manssuer and his wife Mary Beatrice Martin, the next three children, born in 1894, (Lilian Beatrice Manssuer), 1897 (Albert Christopher Manssuer) and then Frederick himself, 1900,  had the mother's maiden surname listed as Walker - and then, to fully confuse me, the last sibling, born 1908, the mother's maiden surname was again Martin - all of the children had second given names and all appear on census returns together ....I've checked to see if there was any discrepancy with Mary Beatrice's birth, or maybe she had been married before and then divorced etc, but nothing could explain the surname Walker....what other reasons could there be other than possibly an affair, an adoption/surrogacy (I know the latter probably not the case), or did he leave a wife, get with a paramour, then get back with the wife, all between census returns, and the children all lived together??  Beatrice died in 1920 and Christopher DID remarry, to a Martha Tickle...but, again, nothing pops up re the Walker surname - I'm almost positive there will be something right under my nose or obvious to others, or something maybe as simple as, she just went by another name for a while, but I just wanted to see if anyone else had any ideas.  Mary Beatrice Martin's parents were a Robert Martin and an Elizabeth Emma and while there a a few marriages that could fit the bill, I'm no further forward.  Robert was a member of the clergy.  There was a marriage I found that suggested a marriage between a Robert Martin in the North West, to an Elizabeth Staveley (widow), but not much information to go on.  Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Place name in Ireland
« on: Friday 07 October 22 20:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to decipher the birth place for an ancestor from the 1861 census.

I can make out what I think is Armagh and Ireland but there is another place name written that I am struggling with!  It doesn't help that there is a strike mark through the word!  Still, any help would be most appreciated.

Thank you

Michelle

Hi,

Struggling to work out the cause of death on this little boys record?  I've tried to decipher as in the title, however, if someone else could shed light on the exact wording and then a rough description of what it was that killed him, it would be most appreciated - I believe Enteritis concerns the gut?

Thanking you in anticipation  :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Address of Bride on Marriage Record
« on: Wednesday 29 June 22 10:09 BST (UK)  »
Good morning,

I've been trying to clarify the address of the Bride on the attached marriage record of Charles Davies and Elizabeth Guthrie.

I know they were married in the parish of All Saints, Liverpool. Arburylet Street and Ackerley Street seem to crop up but I'm not sure if they are correct - Arbury West St maybe - the only one popping up on maps (old and new) appears to be Arbury Avenue and similar.

I wonder if a fresh set of eyes could help.

Many thanks,

Michelle
