Family History Beginners Board / Where to go next with DNA results
« on: Wednesday 26 October 22 12:24 BST (UK)  »
I did my ancestry DNA a few years ago with the hope of finding info about my maternal grandfather Mr. Grady (his first name changed multiple times over the years depending who you spoke to)
I only got 4th cousins or smaller in my matches.
There were no matches to his name either, having checked after 1 year, there are now 5x 5th/6th and less cousins with the name Grady /O'Grady.
I'm clutching at straws a little but it's the first ever lead!

I have added them to a group and found our linked matches (similar to Leeds method)

My question is, where do I go from here.
Thank you

Edit-Results are also uploaded to all other sites they can be.

Mary Jane Drake and Albert Dawson had a daughter b.1868 named Mary A Dawson in Aberystwyth.
1886 Mary Jane and Albert have a child named John Austin Dawson, born, baptised and died same year, Aberystwyth.

1888 Mary A Dawson had a son named John Austin Dawson. I can’t find birth records, but can find a baptism record where it names Mary Ann and says she is a single woman. JA was baptised in Aberystwyth.

John Austin was raised by his grandparents according to the 1891 and 1901 census and letters sent to my Grandfather where he calls him brother, not Uncle.
John Austin died in WW1, and I have many  sources regarding him.

I can’t find any details of Mary A Dawson after the baptism, and I’m not sure where to go from here.
She was listed as a servant age 12 in Aberystwyth in the 1881 census, and also listed in her parents census form in Aberystwyth.

I am very very taken with this particular cluster of my family and I would really like to be able to find as much as possible that might give an idea why Mary A didn’t raise John, especially as she had him baptised. Assume if it was a big secret that Mary Jane and Albert would have named themselves had this been a plan from the start (although I may be wrong)
Perhaps she died? It would explain how the situation arose and why I can’t find her, BUT I also can’t find a death record. Could she have decided against registering the birth and just named him John Austin after her deceased brother?

Mary had an older sister who moved to Lancashire and became Martha J Constantine, as far as I can tell the other siblings stayed in Aberystwyth.
Any help gratefully received!

Family History Beginners Board / Got myself in a mess - Joseph Slack b1824 Cheshire
« on: Thursday 04 February 21 10:51 GMT (UK)  »
So I am stuck, I have too much information and I’ve over complicated things and I can’t get unstuck.

My second great  Grandfather Joseph Slack
Born 1824 to Elizabeth Slack (only parent on baptism record)

Joseph married Martha Birchall (b.1826) in 1846 Cheshire, Thomas Hough was named as Joseph's father on marriage.

In the 1851 census there is a John Slack b. 1821 (servant), a Martha Birchall b.1828 (niece) living with a James Hough in Cheshire (1)
James Hough as far as my mediocre research tells me, is a brother to Thomas Hough.

There is also an 1851 census where Joseph Slack lived with Martha Slack and their daughter Elizabeth Slack (2) also in Cheshire
I know that census (2) is most likely to be the right one, I just can’t get over the  coincidence of  census (1)

Now add in some additional intrigue.
Elizabeth Slack b.1850 married in 1869 in Cheshire, she married Thomas Hough, Elizabeth’s father is John Slack.

Joseph Slack is a Tanner throughout the census (2) (1851/1861/1871) , so I really just think I’m over thinking it. It just seems too much a coincidence

Does anyone have any thoughts? How do I fix this mess I’ve got myself into?

My grandmother had my mother out of wedlock, despite pretending she had married and my mother being born with his surname.

The story I have is that he was a delivery driver who lived in Bristol, and delivered to Mid Wales in the 50's. As soon as he found out my Nana was pregnant, he was never seen again.

My mother always thought his name was Dennis Edward Grady, but having searched BMD I can't find any Dennis Edward born between 1900 and 1935 a reasonable assumption of birth given that my mother was born in 1952.

Can anyone advise where I go from here? I have searched all the 1939 census on find my past, but in 1939 all the Dennis Grady's are school age so not particularly helpful.

Thank you

World War Two / Medal identification help needed
« on: Sunday 22 November 20 12:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Is anybody able to tell me what this medal is?

This is Captain Thomas Brodigan (Aberystwyth 1882-1966), he was my great Uncle. The story I was told was that he was awarded this medal for being the first merchant ship to land at Normandy during the D-Day landings.

Now this is either not true, not documented or I don't know where to look!
If anyone could dig up any info that would be amazing!
Thank you!

World War One / Help needed to research John Austin Dawson died 1915 France
« on: Monday 16 November 20 19:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
My GG Uncle died in WW1.
The following info is available on a war memorial wesbite
"John Austin Dawson, Private, 3664, Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Born in Aberystwyth in 1895, son of Charles and Sarah Dawson. Joined the 2nd Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, attached to 22 Brigade, 7th Division. Killed in France on 25 September 1915, aged 20. Commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France"

He was actually born in 1886 to Jane Dawson and Albert Edward Dawson (I have contacted wesbite owner to give details)

So my question, there are multiple war diaries available, but how would I search for "2nd Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, attached to 22 Brigade, 7th Division"

There are a lot for RWR, but I havent found any directly relating to 2nd battalion, but there are lots of 2/6, 2,7 and the like, what does the 6 or 7 relate to?

How important when searching is 22 Brigade or 7th division,

Please excuse my absolute ignorance, I have attempted to google, but it seems to be one of those things you know or you don't and I don't even know how to start learning!

Thanks in advance.

Ireland / Mary Jane Drake 1848 doesn't exist before move to Wales
« on: Friday 13 November 20 07:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
My G.G Grandmother was named Mary Jane Drake in her 1864 marriage banns.
Married in aberystwyth to Albert Dawson.
Father is listed possibly as Michael Drake, although the transcriber seems to think he is named Macfiael.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jaJsxPnBP_8QoGYlL_VOgbdAleT78lP4/view?usp=sharing
(Am not sure how to link photos)

She lived and died in Aberystywth following her marriage, known as Jane Dawson
In every census her place of birth is listed as Ireland, and Dublin, Ireland in one.
Listed age seems to put her born around 1848

I cannot find anything at all about either Mary Jane or Michael/Macfiael before the marriage, or anything about the father after the marriage.

In the local paper archives there is a petty sessions article about her being accused by a neighbour of fleeing Ireland following a murder, which then led to my GG Grandmother striking her.
From the local paper archives, she seems a bit feisty, and was always in the court for fighting, drinking, being a nuisance.
I have ordered the marriage certificate, but not sure where to go from here!

Europe / Dorothea Struck, Brodigan baptismal records
« on: Friday 13 November 20 07:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am trying to find out where to find the baptismal records mentioned in this thread https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=801083.msg6588058#msg6588058
(Apologies, I don't know how to do fancy links)

I know very little about Dorothea accept she gave birth to my G G Grandfather in the maternity hospital in Kiel in 1847, she was an unmarried mother and the father's name was Christian Braeutigam from Raisdorf  apparently the child was conceived in Preetz .I have obtained this information from a baptismal record.

I have contacted the author directly. but have yet to have a reply, I have searched ancestry UK, and the German records websites I can find for the baptismal records, but I sadly am new to family trees and don't really know where to look.

Any help would be hugely appreciated.
