Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Dalton North Riding Catholic records
« on: Sunday 17 December 23 18:07 GMT (UK)  »
My family, surname Barwick, were from Dalton, near Gayles in Yorkshire North Riding.
I can’t seem to find the Catholic christening records for this area for the time period 1690 to 1730.
They were definitely catholic, as we have family documents from that time period that state this.
Would the records be held in North Riding somewhere?

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Catholic Church in Dalton early 1700s
« on: Wednesday 13 December 23 13:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me?
One of my ancestors, Robert Barwick, was born in Dalton, Yorkshire. He was a farmer for 40yrs and was a Catholic. I know this info from some old deeds my mother has that have been passed down the family.
My issue is I’ve not been able to find his Christening record. Is there anywhere I can find the Catholic records for Dalton parish for the early 1700s. I think he must have been born between 1700-1702. Many thanks

« on: Saturday 17 December 22 16:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me. I’ve found a potential ancestor, John Gilbert. Baptised daughter April 1816 in Chichester Sussex. Mother - Elizabeth. Noted as living at Chichester Barracks at the time in the 14th Regiment of foot 3rd battalion.
Does anyone know if I can find out John Gilbert’s Birth place and date? I’m not sure if he was from Sussex, apologies if I’ve posted in the wrong group. Tia.

Armed Forces / 14th Regiment of foot 3rd Battalion 1816 John Gilbert

I have found a possible ancestor through a baptism of Maria Gilbert on 29th April 1816 Chichester Sussex. Father - John Gilbert, Mother - Elizabeth.
John is down as living at the Barracks and in the 14th Regiment.
Does this mean the 14th Foot Regiment stationed at Chichester Barracks?
I’ve found a John Gilbert on the Waterloo Medal roll and he’s listed as being in the the 14th Foot regiment 3rd Battalion.
Is there somewhere I could find out if the John I have found on the medal roll is the same John on the baptism certificate?
I don’t know anything else about John and Elizabeth at present.
Tia

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Mary Eskilson (nee Lane) - Vanished?
« on: Wednesday 14 September 22 14:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I’m hoping someone may be able to help me find the birth and death record of my 5th GG, Mary Eskilson nee. Lane.

Mary Lane was born around 1776, but I haven’t found her birth record yet.
In 1800 she married my 5th GG Andres Eskilson at St George’s in the East Church in London.
Andres (born around 1780 in Sweden), was imprisoned at Newgate for 4 days as a Debtor in 1803.
In 1804 he was prest by the Navy, and joined the ship HMS Temeraire and fought in the Battle of Trafalger, as an ordinary Seaman.
In 1807 he was discharged from the British Navy, as he was Swedish, and there was a conflict of interest at the time as there were political changes between England and the Baltic states.
He returned home to Mary, as in 1809 Andres and Mary had a daughter Jane Eskilson on 14/10/1809. On 21/10/1809 Jane was baptised at Whitechapel, Stepney, London.
Then on 29/05/1815 they had a son Andrew Eskilson. Who was baptised on 29/03/1818 at St George’s in the East Church London.
In 1823, Mary Eskilson applied for her son Andrew to go to Greenwich Hospital School in London. As he was the son of a

Family History Beginners Board / Swedish Ancestors - Eskilson
« on: Friday 06 May 22 06:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I’ve hit a brick wall with my research. My 5x G Grandfather was Andres (or Anders) Eskilson born around 1780 in Sweden. Came to England and married an English women called Mary Lane at St George’s in the East church in London. He was imprisoned for debts in Oct 1803, and then prest to the British Royal Navy.
I’m trying to find more info about him, I.e. his birth in Sweden.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Armed Forces / Eskilson - Sweden
« on: Wednesday 04 May 22 21:32 BST (UK)  »
I discovered that my 4th Great Grandfather, Andrew Eskilson, may have attended Greenwich Hospital School from 1828. His father, A Swedish sailor, also called Andrew Eskilson, served in the Napoleonic wars. Which is how he earned a place at the school.
Please could you advise where I can possibly find records of his time at the school?
I have obtained copies of the admissions papers from the National Archives. But I am trying to find out more about him. As he didn’t become a Naval serviceman, and instead spent his entire life moving up and down England as a sail maker and comb maker. Settling for no longer than a year in each place, before moving on. And never moved back to London.
Any advice you could give would be gratefully received.

Oxfordshire / Hidden Ancestors
« on: Sunday 15 November 20 10:49 GMT (UK)  »
I've come to a complete halt with my family tree, and wondered if anyone could give any advice please?
I am really struggling to find the origin of the parents of my 4th G.Grandfather - James Gilbert, (b.1843 Oxford) married Eliza Haynes in Oxford in 1861. (Wire worker/Sieve maker)
His fathers name was given on the banns as John Andrew Gilbert. But John has never appeared on any census records.
No birth records at all for James, nor his brothers John & Henry.
Maria Gilbert (b. 1814-1816), is James' and his brothers mother. No marriage records for her and John Andrew Gilbert.
Maria appears in Census records of 1861, 1871, 1881. Then in she was admitted to Oxford Lunacy Asylum, where she sadly died in 1894. She was a Hawker.
In 1861 Maria is listed as a Widow. So John Andrew Gilbert had died before then.
I would love to find out about John Andrew Gilbert.
