Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Likelihood of grandfatherhood.
« on: Monday 06 March 23 18:52 GMT (UK)  »
X is looking for her grandfather (her mother was illegitimate). The best candidate is 'Y'.

Match 1: Y's grandaughter, 'Ann': (potential half first cousin) - 473cM (7% shared)
Match 2: Y's brother's (W) grandson, 'Joe': (potential second cousin) - 318cM (5% shared)
Match 3: Y's brother's (W) great-grandson, 'Lee': (potential second cousin 1x removed) - 194cM (3%)
Match 4: Y's brother's (W) granddaughter, 'Rae': (potential second cousin) - 155cM (2%)
Match 5: Rae's son, 'Lou': (potential second cousin 1x removed) - 123cM (2%)
Match 6: Y's cousin's grandson, 'Don': (potential second cousin 1x removed?) - 71cM (1%)
Match 7: Don's son 'Ron': (potential second cousin 2x removed?) - 54cM (1%)

How likely is it that Y is the father? Ann only shares 253cM with Joe.

(Please do not tell me to do more research. This is as much as I have been able to do over 3 years!)

The Common Room / Finding identity of man mentioned in probate record.
« on: Sunday 08 January 23 01:18 GMT (UK)  »
Philip Wilkinson was born on the 13th of August 1893 in London, England, to Conrad Augustus (1864 - 1915) and Maud Alice (1874 - ?) Wilkinson. He married Maria Sarah 'Marie' Golding in 1921, and they had a daughter who died in infancy. They had separated by 1928. I do not believe he remarried. He died 24th November 1954 in Hackney or Stoke Newington, London, England. In his probate record (20 May 1955), the recipient (?) is listed as George Howard Wilkinson, printer. Although this man is obviously related to Philip, I am not sure how. I have not found Philip to have had any cousins by this name (though George was a family name), and he was an only child. Can anybody help me find out who George is? Thank you :)

The Common Room / Parents of William Davies
« on: Thursday 22 September 22 22:04 BST (UK)  »
William Davies was born on the 18th of September 1863 at 13 City Garden Row, St Luke's, London, England. He was the son of Joseph Davies and Matilda Davies (nee Richards). I believe that he may have been adopted as a child (between 1863 and 1871) by William Jelley (1837 - 1888) and Frances Elizabeth Jelley (nee Richards) (1836 - 1906), and renamed William Jelley Davies (I have posted about him before), but I have been unable to prove that he is the right child.

I can find absolutely no information on Joseph and Matilda Davies:
  • No fitting marriage record
  • No appearance as a couple in any censuses (they were not living at 13 City Garden Row in 1861 or 1871
  • I can find no other children that they might had
  • I can find no death records that would work for Matilda prior to 1871

Can anybody help?

The Common Room / Who was Patrick O'Sullivan Ware?
« on: Tuesday 30 August 22 20:06 BST (UK)  »
Maria Guinnee (1860 - 1924; her name is misspelled on the record) married Patrick O'Sullivan Ware in Pancras, London, England in January 1882:

Name   Maria Guinner
Registration Year   1882
Registration Quarter   Jan-Feb-Mar
Registration district   Pancras
Inferred County   London
Volume   1b
Page   227

Records on Page   4

Maria and Patrick had no children (or if they did, none survived infancy). By 1889 she had remarried to William Jelley Davies, with who she had 4 children, born between 1890 and 1896, with:

Record details
Name   Maria Sullivan Ware
Gender   Female
Marriage Age   30
Birth Date   1859
Marriage Date   10 Jul 1889
Marriage Place   Stratford, St John, Essex, England
Father   William Guinee
Spouse   William Davies

However, it also appears that she married William in 1895 too?

Name   Maria Sullivan
Gender   Female
Marriage Age   35
Record Type   Marriage
Birth Date   1860
Marriage Date   9 Sep 1895
Marriage Place   St Martin, Kentish Town, Camden, England
Father   William Guinnce
Spouse   William Davis Jelley
Register Type   Parish Register

In the second marriage, she is listed as a widow. I do not know why she is recorded as having married  William twice (I am almost certain both records belong to her).

I am looking to find out what happened to Patrick, who I can find absolutely no trace of (excluding his marriage record). Maria Guinnee (whose name is spelled many ways across records) was Irish (born in Limerick), and whilst Patrick O'Sullivan is certainly an Irish name, Ware is an English surname.

Can anyone help? I'm happy to provide extra information if needed.

Dorothy Ellen Jelley Davies was born on the 30th September 1893 at 9 Mansfield Road in the district Pancras, London, England. Her parents were William and Maria Davies. Maria's maiden name is recorded online as 'Guinner', but due to family knowledge that Maria may have been Irish, I believe this may be a mistranscription of 'Guinness' (the word is hard to read on the certificate itself). I believe that Dorothy had a brother called William Joseph, born in Pancras in the 2nd quarter of 1892 - Maria's name is transcribed as 'Guinnse' here.
Dorothy's birth was reported by an 'H. Jelley' (who likely inspired Dorothy's middle name), who is recorded as being present at the birth. However, Dorothy stopped using this middle name in adulthood, going by just Dorothy Ellen Davies.

Family history also says that Dorothy had a sister (or half sister?) called Margaret (which I can find no record of), and that her father - William - was illegitimate. These facts may or may not be true.

The reason that I am posting here is because I can find no record of the family of William, Maria, William Joseph and Dorothy in any census records, no fitting birth, marriage or death records for William or Maria or any trace of what happened to William Joseph (who I don't believe died young, but lived until at least the 1950s), or Margaret.

I do not need any assistance with investigating Dorothy's marriage, daughter or death. I have these on record already.

I would be very grateful if anybody could help me find any additional information.

Thank you for reading.

The Common Room / Searching for more information about a death
« on: Saturday 04 June 22 15:02 BST (UK)  »
My great-great-great grandfather David Moir drowned in the King William IV Dock in Dundee, Scotland in January 1877.

Although I don't think that his death was suspicious - it was most likely an accident or suicide - I would like to know more about what happened (the article is very short). Does anyone know where I should look?

The Common Room / Can anybody help me find what happened to Eliza Wade?
« on: Sunday 27 March 22 23:11 BST (UK)  »
Eliza Wade was born on the 8th of September 1888, with her twin sister Harriet, as the daughter of Edward Wade (1854 - ?) and Rosanna Wade (nee Gould; previously Dover) (1850 - ?). She had an older sister named Alice - however, Harriet AND Alice died soon after birth, making Eliza the only surviving child of the Wades until the birth of her sister Florrie ten years later (who I have previously posted about).

She appears in the 1901 census with her parents. However, the 1911 census states that out of the Wades' four daughters, only one is living - and the one living must be Florrie, as she appears in it. This indicates that Eliza must have, like Alice and Harriet, died - however, I can find absolutely no corresponding death record or marriage record (as she may have died under a married name). I have combed through all records that may match, and found out that they were different women.

Furthermore, in the 1911 census with her parents and sister, her name actually appears but is crossed out: 'Lizzie Wade - 23 - Single - Born in Wistow - English.'

I am very confused - can anybody help?

The Common Room / Can anyone help me find who Florrie Wade really was?
« on: Sunday 27 March 22 23:02 BST (UK)  »
Florrie Wade appears in the 1911 England Census as the daughter of Rosanna and Edward Wade. She recorded as being born c. 1898 in Wistow, Walthamstow. Florrie is indicated to be the only one of the Wade's four daughters that is still living. However, I do not believe she is the couple's biological daughter because:
  • Rosanna Wade (nee Gould) was already 48 years old in 1898
  • I can find no birth record that fits for a Florrie, Florence, Florie or Flora Wade from 1895 to 1901 with a mother's maiden name of anything close to Gould or Dover (Rosanna's first married name).
  • Florrie was born ten years after the sisters closest in age to her, Eliza and Harriet, who were born in 1888
  • Florrie does not appear in the 1901 census, despite her sister Eliza appearing there and the fact she would have been three years old here.

I'm not sure how I can work out who Florrie really was - I don't know if she was a relative of Rosanna or Edward, or if her real name even was Florrie. I have found a few workhouse records that may match, but cannot be sure. Can anybody help?

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / How to work out my great-grandmother's father?
« on: Tuesday 18 January 22 17:55 GMT (UK)  »
(Names edited for privacy)

My great-grandmother 'Jane' was born illegitimately in London in 1919. She did not know her father ('X'), but was told by her mother that he was a Jewish man. This was proven true when my mother (X's great-granddaughter) took a DNA test and was 15% European Jewish (this absolutely cannot have come from anywhere else in her family).

I believe that I have narrowed Jane's father down to one of six brothers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6), with the surname 'Katz', who were the sons of Polish Jewish immigrants and were in the right place at the right time (and were appropriate ages: there were two more brothers that I excluded as they were underage). When they are compared to my mother's matches that I know the identity of:

'Jack Katz' shares 249cM of DNA with my mother and is the grandson of Brother 1
'Peter Zielinski' shares 123cM of DNA with my mother and is the great-grandson of Brother 1
'George Katz' shares 69cM of DNA with my mother and is the son of the Katz brothers' cousin
'Gerald Katz' shares 61cM of DNA with my mother and is the son of 'George Katz'
'Lewis Smith' shares 29cM of DNA with my mother and the great-grandson of Brother 1

These are the only people that replied to my messages/ knew about their family tree. Obviously, Brother 1 comes up the most here. How likely is it that he was Jane's father?
