Ireland / How long for copy of entry from Irish GRO?

Hi all,

I just ordered a copy of a death entry from the Irish GRO. It was pre-1870, and I have waited years now for them to digitise these earlier records, but I decided yesterday to just bite the bullet and pay for a copy sent via e-mail.

I am just wondering how long it will take for them to process my application? The England & Wales GRO is very quick (less than 1 week for my last .pdf certificate), but I can't really find anything online about the Irish GRO waiting times. Is it weeks, months, a year (please no!)?

The Common Room / Unanswered Threads Board

I was just wondering whether there is a way to view all unanswered threads (i.e. threads where no one has replied) on one board, preferably from most recent to oldest. Whenever I want to look for unanswered threads, I have to go through each board individually, which makes it easy to miss threads to which I could contribute.

Often, unanswered threads are the most challenging, and therefore very interesting, and I do feel sad when newcomers post and their thread gets no response, often because it has slipped off the main board and people miss it.

I thought maybe it would be a nice idea for the unanswered posts to also be included on an 'unanswered threads' board (as well as the original board, e.g. Family History Beginners) and then automatically moved from the board when they receive a response. Not sure how easy it would be to do, though.

What does everyone think about this? Obviously, it would be for Sarah and Trystan to decide whether to implement it (by the way, Sarah and Trystan, thank you for giving us such a wonderful family history platform!).

The Common Room / Catherine O'Brien (1887-?)

My dad has 2 DNA matches who are the great-grandchildren of this lady. The matches are quite strong - 139cM and 133 cM - indicating that they are around 3rd cousin level.

However, I am really struggling to find out what her parents' names were!

Here is what I have:

Full Name: Catherine Josephine O'Brien
Date of Birth: 12th May 1887
Place of Birth: County Kerry (my dad's parents are from here)

I got this from her naturalisation record from 1951:

She married Patrick James Brennan, but I can't find any marriage record. Their first child was born in 1922, so presumably they married sometime before then? They lived in Providence, Rhode Island.

I can see her on the various censuses, but I cannot find a death record. The last record I have on her is the naturalisation one.

Despite having a name and a birth date, I can also not find her birth or baptism record in Kerry!

Nor can I find an obvious candidate on the 1901 or 1911 census, despite knowing that she only immigrated to the U.S. in 1914.

My dad's grandma was an O'Brien from Killorglin (specifically the Lonart area), and the DNA matches fit into a cluster of known O'Brien matches, but I cannot find the link.

Any help to find her parents' names, whether the information comes from Ireland or America, would be greatly appreciated.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 16th Century Inquisition Post Mortem (Latin)

I would be so incredibly grateful if someone could help me translate this document from 1584. Although I have studied old handwriting, I am yet to tackle Latin so I really need some help!

It is a rather large document - although I imagine that quite a bit of it is the standard legal waffle - so I will have to upload it piece by piece.

As background, the document relates to Henry Pyke (or Pike) of 'Weeke' and Rainscombe.

In this first section, I can see his name and the names of the jurors: Jerard Errington [Gerard Errington], Armiger, Robti Elliott [Robert Elliot], gen, John Robins, gen, Thome Eire [Thomas Eyer], gen. Then someone has written over something and I think the name below is Johes ??llngsby, gen. Then Thome Smith [Thomas Smith], gen, William ?, gen, Alexi Oates? [Alexander Oates], gen, Edwardi Hyde [Edward Hyde], gen, Willi Holmes [William Holmes], gen, Willi Harris [William Harris] (added above), Thome Smith [Thomas Smith] tann (?) and Robti Smith [Robert Smith].

I noticed on his son's inquisition post mortem that one of the jurors was his son's brother-in-law, so I am hoping maybe one of these men is also a relation?

I understand that full translation is very time-consuming, so if anyone could please provide the most important points, I would be very thankful.

Part 1 is below. I think this part is mostly the names of the jurors and an introduction?

Wiltshire / I think my mind is playing tricks on me!

Hi everyone,

Bit of an odd one.

A while back I was trying to figure out who the father of my ancestor (Hannah) was. I found this will, which matched up with the name of a possible father, but wasn't certain I was on the correct path.

Later, through DNA and finding the witnesses at Hannah's wedding, I figured out that this was, in fact, the correct father. I went back to add his will to my tree and I couldn't find it - it was like it had disappeared!

I am sure I saw it on Ancestry, as they have digitised most of the Wiltshire wills. I looked at the Wiltshire archives website, which confirmed this will does exist, so why can I no longer find it? Does Ancestry delete records sometimes, by accident?

If anyone can find it, I would be very grateful, as I starting to feel like my mind is playing tricks on me!

Here are the details:

Vincent Head, labourer, lived in Marlborough in Wiltshire, died in 1822 (but his will was written in 1821).

Thomas Pyke, the son of Henry Pyke of Weeke was born ... being the 25 of February 1588 and christened at ...

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Changing signatures

I'm currently doing a research project on the Pyke family and I am trying to piece them all together through wills and marriage bonds.

After struggling to find the connection between the various members of the family, I feel like I have finally figured it out.

However, there is a little inconsistency between the signature of one of my ancestors, Henry Pyke. On the will of his cousin in 1692 he spells Pyke with a 'y', but in his will in 1700, he spells it with an 'i'.

The thing is, I'm 99% this must be his signature, as there aren't actually any other candidates and the 'Henry' part is almost identical, but there is a niggling concern about why someone would change the way their surname looks 8 years later. He was almost 70 when he died; I don't know whether he could have had some ailment which affected his hands.

I would be grateful for opinions on whether this is definitely the same man.

Wiltshire / The Curious Case of the Missing Marriage (18th century)

Hello,

After being forced to take a break from family history due to health problems, I have returned with renewed gusto, determined to break down some of my peskiest brick walls!

I am a descendant of Vincent Head and his wife, Frances, through their son Charles Head (1731-1773). Vincent was born in West Stowell, Wiltshire, in 1701, to William Head and his wife, Sarah Pyke. Researching back from Vincent's parents was fairly straightforward once I found their marriage bond.

This issue is not with Vincent himself, but the identity of Charles' mother, Frances. I have searched far and wide and cannot find any marriage between a Vincent Head and a Frances. I've tried all the possible spellings I can think of and still no luck!

When Vincent was around 14, he was sent to London to serve an apprenticeship under a pastry cook. I found Vincent's name on an FindMyPast index to the Martin-in-the-Fields settlement examinations, which also mentioned his wife, Frances. It took place in 1725. Recently, the images were uploaded to FamilySearch (hurray!) and I was finally able to read it:

Within the record, he states that he and Frances married upwards of a year ago in "Cane", Wiltshire and that they were currently childless. The only place I could think of was Calne, so I excitedly rushed over to the images of the Calne parish register... but their marriage wasn't there.

I am really stumped; I also cannot find the baptism of their eldest child, Sarah. She is mentioned in an index for the Wiltshire settlement certificates on FindMyPast:
Vincent, wife Frances, dau Sarah. Living in Marlborough St Peter & Paul. Settlement certificate from St Martin in the Fields, Middx.
The year is listed as 1726, so she must have been born sometime between the 2 records. Sarah married Charles Gibbons in 1753. The first baptism I can find for Vincent is for his daughter Elizabeth, who was born in 1730.

If anyone can help, even with a suggestion for what "Cane" could be, I would be very grateful!

P.S. If you find the Wikitree profile on Vincent Head, that is mine
