Lancashire / Records Office help needed
« on: Thursday 23 July 09 14:41 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
My research is all in Cumbria and Westmorland but I've found some documents are located in Lancs records office.  I need some help to assess whether the documents are worth copying or travelling up to see.  Would anyone be visiting the records office soon and be able to have a look at them for me, please?
Best wishes,
Jackie

Staffordshire / White of Armitage
« on: Saturday 05 July 08 12:37 BST (UK)  »
I wondered if there are any White researchers?   I saw on a market stall this morning, a batch of postcards addressed to Miss White, Station Road, Armitage.  They were dated 1903, 1908, etc.  The  stallholder wanted a pound each.
Best wishes,
Jackie

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Birth, Marriage lookup - Frances Nutter
« on: Saturday 06 January 07 14:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I'm looking for the birth and marriage of Frances (Fanny) Nutter.  She was born ~ 1820 in Carlisle and married Isaac Ostle.  Their first child was born in 1842, Calvo, so I'm guessing the marriage might have been around 1840.  I have them on all censuses but I can't track Frances to a family or find her birth.
Any information would be a great help!
Best wishes,
Jackie

Down / Conaway
« on: Thursday 05 October 06 22:15 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
This is a first attempt to find Irish relatives.  I have Margaret Conaway, born 1853.  She married in Whitehaven, Cumberland, in 1874 (to Joseph Kirkbride).  Her father was William Conaway, a joiner.
In one census, she lists her place of birth as Newcastle, County Down.  I can't find her in the 1871 census.  However, family lore said that they first lived in the Isle of Mann..... so...... I'm guesing that they didn't arrive in England until after 1871 but have no idea when she/they actually left Ireland.
I'd be very grateful for any help or advice.

Best wishes,
Jackie

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Whitehaven lookup please
« on: Friday 11 August 06 11:07 BST (UK)  »
Could someone do a lookup for me, please?  I'm looking for Joseph Kirkbride born around 1851 in Whitehaven.  I have him on the 1851 census with father Thomas Kirkbride, mother Maryann (nee Irving?), address Scilly Banks, Whitehaven.  Siblings are Jane, William, Mary, Margaret, Thomas.
I sent for b.cert 10b 444, but this Joseph, b 1853 and has different parents.  Can't find another Joseph of near dates.

Many thanks,
Jackie

Cumberland / Advice for 1st trip to records offices
« on: Sunday 09 July 06 10:20 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,
Would you advise me on what to do on a first trip to records offices, graveyards, etc?  I am planning to go to Cumbria in the school holidays.  The main names on my tree are Watson, Simpson, Ostle and Renwick.  Places, Alston, Whitehaven, Newton Arlosh, Holm Cultram (but so many other towns too!).  I can see that it would be possible to be so bogged down by possibilities that you actually achieve nothing at all....
I really am new at this and I don't even know what to ask for in a records office... So, any advice - and please don't underestimate the lack of knowledge here!  :-[
