Armed Forces / Casulty Clearing Station
« on: Sunday 12 November 23 16:36 GMT (UK)  »
I have been checking as much as I can on my grandfather George Henry Farnell's war records (b. Hull, 1892. In the Durham Light Infantry, as a bantam)
I have come across the fact that he was admitted to the 139th Field Ambulance on 4th Sept 1918 with an 'unspecified wound' to the leg. He was discharged the same day to the 2nd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station. (Not sure where)
My question - is there likely to be any records of those soldiers sent there. I do not know the nature of the injury or how long it took before he was back in action. He never mentioned the incident to me at all, but my mum said he kept the German dagger that caused the injury, for years.
I was wondering about the severity of the injury. He survived and died in 1976 aged 84 years. But whilst in hospital in his last days I discovered he was still having the wound treated! (with honey if my memory isnt playing tricks!)
The Bamtam link is another story, but you do wish you'd asked for more stories from your ancestors don't you. But as a child, it doesn't cross your mind until it's too late.

Technical Help / Saving Family Trees
« on: Thursday 09 November 23 11:59 GMT (UK)  »
Many many many moons ago I used Family Tree Maker to store my research. I used to print out the pages and put in files for ease of reading. I had the pedigree charts and Individual Reports printed. I was also able to print out the notes and Sources, and make up pages of photographs.
For reasons I cannot remember, when I changed computers I installed the free RootsMagic software and (eventually!) transferred my work across. The Individual Reports etc, do not look as good on the Roots Magic, and I have never really got on with the software.
I have now got a new laptop and looking to install new software with the hope that I can download all my information.
I have my printed version, but want to update a few details and also I want to print out one branch of the family tree for a relative, hopefully with all the notes and sources information.
Do I need an independant software package (Family Tree Maker, RoostMagic, etc) ?
I am thinking of becoming a member of Ancestry shortly. I know you can put your family tree on their site, but does it hold notes, sources and photograph information, or is it just a pedigree chart? Can you print off Individual Reports?
Sorry for the long winded message, but I want to try and get my head around what I'm doing before  I spend a lot of money!
Regards, and thanks in advance,
Gill

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Family Tree Software
« on: Wednesday 26 July 23 11:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am hoping to restart my research after a few years break (after not being able to progress further)
I just wanted to ask a general question. Do people keep their family trees on sites such as Ancestry.com and/or do you keep your tree on your own device using a commercial tree builder programme?
I used to build my tree using Family Tree Maker many moons ago. When I got a new computer (still many moons ago) I transferred to the free Roots Magic. It never quite transferred cleanly and took quite a bit of re-entering before I managed to input all my information.
The reason I am asking, is that I now have a new laptop and want to put my tree on it. I am thinking of buying the new Roots Magic programme, but worry I will not be able to transfer from PC to laptop. What do people think of this software? Is there a better one?
Sorry to ramble on a bit, but I am keen to get going again, but not so keen to waste my money if I cannot transfer information.
Thanks, Gill

The Common Room / Is it possible to compile a family tree backwards?!!
« on: Tuesday 12 January 21 16:02 GMT (UK)  »
Usually when you compile a family tree you start with yourself and work backwards - parents, grandparents, etc
I want to compile details in the opposite direction. Is there somewhere I can do this?
As a seperate tree I want to start with my great, great grandfather's sister and go down from there - listing her children, grandchildren, etc.
There is probably a very easy way to do it. but I can't find it!
Thanks

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / JOHN HENRY SMITH
« on: Saturday 27 April 19 16:47 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if someone can give me some ideas where to look!!
My great grandfather John Henry Smith was born 1850 in Huddersfield. A few years ago I found his marriage, which had been my brick wall for about 15 years!!! (Found a newspaper report from Australia with his brother's death reported - as he had married a much younger girl one day, and dropped dead the next!! Turns out John Henry married his sister-in-law!)
Anyway, I have John on the censuses until 1911, in Huddersfield, Cleckheaton and later Hull. I have him in 1916 in Hull Trade & Proffessional Directory - he was a saddler. But then no more.
I have been trying for many years to find his death.
Now I have a death certificate for a John Henry Smith who died 1942 in Hessle (just outside Hull). The birth date is correct, but even with a middle name, it is still a John Smith! Occupation is a Sub-postmaster. Someone suggested that may be an occupation a retired or semi-retired person may do?
Has anyone any ideas how I may find out where my John Henry Smith was after 1916. If I could track his whereabouts, I maybe could prove or disprove this death certificate being his.

I knocked down one brick wall of his after a number of years' Maybe I can do it again??

Technical Help / Old Family Tree Maker
« on: Saturday 14 October 17 16:03 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping that someone will be able to point me in the right direction!
I started my research very many years ago using Family Tree Maker. I am not sure of the version; I no longer have the discs. Two years ago I bought a new computer with Window 10 and I was unable to transfer the programme, together with all my information, to the new computer. I didn't do anything about it as I hadn't done any new research in a while.
Now, I'm fired up again and raring to continue with my research. How do I go about uploading all my old information on my new computer (I still have the old one). I'm hoping there must be a way. I really don't want to start imputing from scratch; it would take years!!
But unfortunately, I am not all that computer savvy.
Hopefully there will be a simple way, that even I can manage.

Yours hopefully!!

Heraldry Crests and Coats of Arms / Any idea what this badge may mean?
« on: Sunday 25 October 15 20:20 GMT (UK)  »
Not sure if this is the actual place to post this, but it didn't seem to fit anywhere else!
I wonder if anyone can recognise what this 'badge' on my great grandfathers watch chain may be? He lived in Hull (1866-1952)
Thank You

World War One / Help with naval uniform
« on: Sunday 02 November 14 21:00 GMT (UK)  »
I have just found a photo of my grandfather.
He is obviously in some sort of naval uniform; can anyone offer any help as to where I can find anything about his records.
He is Frederick Smith, born 1884 in Cleckheaton, Yorkshire. At the time of the WW1 he was living in Hull. He later went on to become a trawler fisherman.
I am assuming the photograph was taken about the time of WW1, but as I have no idea where to look, trying to find a Smith is proving impossible.
Any help gratefully received.
Thanks

World War One / Another uniform to identify.
« on: Wednesday 02 July 14 21:22 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone recognise this uniform my grandad is wearing?
I know he was in the Durham Light Infantry - 19th Batallion - the Bantams. - But there doesn't appear to be any badges from the DLI on this uniform. All I can make out are the crossed flags on his sleeve. Unfortunately there is no cap that might help.
This is the only photograph I have of him in uniform. But which uniform?
