Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What is listed as the occupation?
« on: Sunday 24 April 22 15:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks,

I need some help working out what some details say on a census record.

It's the Michael Beaven in question. I have this so far:

Shaftebury St, ...... house

Michael Beaven, unmarried, 29, ...... to the ...., Wiltshire, Salisbury

I'd be interested to know what it says about the head of the house and his wife too. I'm not quite getting what it says though. I think it says governor of a workhouse... maybe.

Thanks!

Dorset Lookup Requests / Henrietta Gibson's parents
« on: Wednesday 02 March 22 16:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm not having any luck finding out the identities of a Henrietta (Hetty) Gibson's parents. I think perhaps she was raised by another family (Dorey) because I found an 1881 census that lists a Hetty Gibson living with them. It says she was born in Southampton, whereas a 1911 census record lists her birth place as Moreton, Dorset. She was certainly living in Dorset from 1881.

Here's what I know:

  • Born 14th November 1872 according to the 1939 register
  • No father listed on her marriage certificate
  • Married George Aplin in 1900 in Wool, Dorset
  • Children's names were William Charles, Frederick Alexander, Herbert Simon and Raymond Percival Aplin
  • Died in 1949

Any help appreciated. :)

Dorset Lookup Requests / Henry Aplin's parents
« on: Wednesday 02 March 22 16:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm having difficulty finding out who the parents were of someone I'm researching. I find out that someone called Henry Aplin was illegitimate, which makes things more confusing.

Here's what I know:

  • Born around 1822-24 in Broadwinsor, Dorset
  • Died in 1892
  • Married Prudence Studley in 1848
  • Father's name is Isaac Aplin on Henry's marriage certificate but surname can't be right?
  • Children's names were Simeon, Mary, Francis/Frank, Mary Ann, Frederick and George

I'm aware of Henry's criminal conviction but would rather not discuss that.

I did find a baptism record for 1822 that mentions an illegitimate child called Henry Aplin with a mother called Ann Aplin. I'm wondering if that would even be her maiden name or did she use her married name?

Since Henry was illegitimate I just don't know what information I can trust. :-\

Hi everyone,

Are there ways to prove someone abandoned their marriage in the 1800s when there isn't a record of divorce?

Cheers!

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Census records for Joseph Lister
« on: Wednesday 20 October 21 12:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm not having any luck finding out where someone in my family tree ended up after 1871. The person in question is called Joseph Lister, was born in 1858 in Cardiff, Wales and the last census record I have for him is the one in 1871 when he was living in Rotherham, aged 12.

He definitely wasn't living with his parents in 1881. His dad (Joseph Lister) was dead by then and he's not on the census record I found for his step-mum (Mary Lister).

In case it helps, he had siblings called Sarah, Tom, John, Margaret Elizabeth, Wilfred Benjamin and William Seymour.

Any help appreciated finding out where he went/what happened to him.

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know what it says after cardiac degeneration?

Just that one word. The rest doesn't matter.

Thank you!

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Joseph Lister's earlier life
« on: Wednesday 13 October 21 12:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I've been working backwards with someone on my tree. I've mentioned him before but this time need some help with his earlier life. I thought I'd found him on a baptism record and 1841 census but I'm now confused because he supposedly got married in 1838 to a Sarah Holroyd, had a son called William who died aged 6. I say confused because I know he married a Mary Whiley in 1850 and it shows him as being a bachelor on the certificate!!

Some details I know:

1850: Married Mary Whiley
1851: Living in East Markham, Nottinghamshire; estimated birth 1819; born in Leeds, Yorkshire.
1861: Living in Cardiff, Wales; estimated birth 1819; born in Batley, Yorkshire.
Mary Whiley died in 1862
1865: married Mary Williams
1871: Living in Rotherham, Yorkshire; estimated birth 1821; born in Leeds, Yorkshire.
Died on 11th February 1878 in Fewston, Yorkshire

His age flucuates and on his death certificate it says he was 55 but I think that's just a mistake.

Joseph's dad is listed as being Samuel and a farmer on the 2 later marriage certificates. I found a 1851 census for a Samuel Lister that lists him as a farmer and labourer, although he shows as being a clothes maker earlier on, which stacks up with the supposed 1st marriage to Sarah Holroyd.

These are the details I thought I had got right for Joseph's earlier life:

Baptised on 6th December 1818 in Batley, Yorkshire; son of Samuel and Hannah Lister.
Siblings: John, Martha and William
1838: Married Sarah Holroyd
1840: Son William was born
1841: Living in Morley, Yorkshire; estimated birth 1821
1846: Son William died

What do you folks think? Have I gone wrong somewhere? Why would he be shown as a bachelor on the 1850 marriage certificate if he'd been married before? I was expecting it to say widower when I ordered it.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / 1891 Census - Thomas Lister
« on: Thursday 07 October 21 15:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble finding a census for 1891 for a Thomas Lister (born 1853 in Cardiff, Wales). He was in Gisburn, Yorkshire in 1881 and worked as an engine driver.  His wife is called Rosina/Rosey and was also born in Cardiff. They had 2 children in 1881: Sarah A Lister and Rosey Lister.

In a 1901 census I found Rosina as a widow and her 2nd youngest child Nellie was born in 1890 in Cheshire, hence posting this here. Judging from the 1901 census, Thomas and Rosina had children born in various counties so it could be elsewhere (Cardiff, London, Derbyshire and Christchurch). Thomas seems to have enjoyed travel, much like his father. :D

Thank you!

Lanarkshire / 1901 Census - William Seymour Lister
« on: Tuesday 05 October 21 16:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to verify whether I have the right census record for my great grandfather who was called William Seymour Lister (born 1878 in Fewston, Yorkshire).

I have an electoral record for him living at 6 Albany street, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1900 and possibly have a census record for 1901, which shows him being at 20 Union St in Renfrewshire as a boarder and working as a boatbuilder's apprentice. The birth place is listed as Blubberhouses, which happens to be right by Fewston so could be right. He went on to become a reverend so perhaps had a change of career.  :-\

Is anyone please able to check Scottish records to see if there are other possible census records for him in 1901?

Many thanks
